I propose the term cod-wad to describe those types.

This is how Razer makes their money.
Make everything black and bright green with shiny plastic, using a "BE EPIC" marketing approach that is as likely to insult as to appeal to gamers. Then reap the reward.
Oh and every now and then they do actually make a good product.

Just waiting for some new member to pipe up with a story about how he just got his fantastic BWU, and some idiot was in that store looking at half-sized keyboards for like midget hands and laughed at his fantastic BWU.

>have neckbeard touching me...
>alpha male with hot woman walks by
>neckbeard obviously disheartened by being seen in public
>looks at shoes while alpha male passes by grabbing woman's firm ass

Which just tells you exactly how much money actually goes into a Razer product and how much goes into marketing. (Also that Ducky really should at least give us a damn sticker. They're like $0.15/ea in volume with no tooling costs!)
when I buy expensive **** I want to feel like I'm buying expensive ****, and Razer understands that.
Eh, my logitech mouse felt a lot better quality than my old deathadder did. And I've only heard amazing things about logitech's customer service.Oh, no doubt, Logitech mice usually feel and are rock solid, and their customer service is good, but I recently bought a G700s and there was no effort made to make it feel that expensive. Good mouse though, but I ended up returning it due to some damning flaws.

I understand that. But honestly, I want to feel that way when using the product, not just through fancy packaging. It just does not appeal to me at all. But hey, maybe that is just me.

Not saying that the packaging is all that matters, but when I buy something expensive I want the packaging to make it feel right, not make me start thinking "oh man, I spent way too much on this". And I'm sure I'm not the only one here who likes the thrill when you get a brand new gizmo and get to open up the box and reveal all the goodies.
I see where you're coming from. Though for me, often times I either just throw that stuff away or it sits in a corner and I never look at it again.
don't know why you would make a post about it.

Because then how could he brag about being such a 1337 keyboard master while putting down one of those filthy Razor buying, CoD playing, casuls? Obviously saying anything to the guy's face is not an option.
man you gus really hate the BWU its not THAT bad of a keyboard... hahaha.

haha I agree. I don't own a BWU but, I can't imagine it to be that bad a board.

So basically you want Razer to tell you how to feel? :) If you (generic "you") can't quite afford something and need packaging to make you feel good about your purchase and convince you that you've made the right choice, I think it was probably the wrong choice. Look at Filcos--nothing flashy, expensive, no stickers, no LEDs, but you still know you got a damn good keyboard when you plug it in and use it. I'd rather see Razer invest more money into improving their hardware and software than dump money into marketing. I've read through a hundred or so pages of the Razer Synapse software horror on OCN as well as Amazon reviews. And their CS is really bad. Combine that with poor QC on some items and long-term durability issues. The "Razer Experience" is certainly a flashy way to draw your attention from all the flaws and make you pay more money for inferior products.
I don't particularly care about the packaging. It matters more that it's a quality product.

It all boils down to one philosophy though. Your finished product is just as important as your presentation. IE; If you went to a fancy steakhouse, ordered a nice $84.99 T-Bone and it came out on a paper plate with some greenery just tossed to the side and the steak was half off the plate, you'd be upset wouldn't you? I mean sure, it tastes like heaven and is the best thing you've ever eaten, but it could have been better with one small change. Now let's back track. Say they came out with it on a nice glass plate being served from a silver platter, steak perfectly centered and garnished properly, isn't that miles better?
You get $10k in one of 2 forms... a cardboard box with $10k in it or $9k in a $1k briefcase (that you don't need).
Pick one.
That's a bad analogy: you eat your meal off the plate. It's part of the process. Packaging gets removed and tossed into trash or placed in storage, and you don't see it again.

Very true. I frequently buy things that arrive in a bubble mailer, which goes in the trash and is never seen again.
Geekhack isn't the best place to obtain this opinion but, just look at Apple. Presentation is everything.

I always reuse my bubble mailers, that's money I don't have to spend again.
That's why I like Model M packaging. It's very plain.

How? I'm not patient enough to open them in a way other than just ripping them open...
I don't throw my packaging away because I need a safe place to put my keyboards when they're not in use.

I cut the top off with scissors. Then just fold it over, tape it up good, and you're good to go when you reuse it.

Why not stuff them under the desk? :D

AND JUST LET THEM TOUCH THE GROUND ARE YOU NUTS?
Ahem. My desk area isn't much larger than a small closet, and I rarely clean it. I keep the keyboards in the box so that they don't get as dirty. Also 12 year old brother likes to break my things. I can hear him try and open a box from anywhere in the house.
I'll admit that I kinda like the Razer experience, and that they've even managed to make one at all. When you buy expensive stuff from Razer you do get all the bells and whistles, when you buy an equally expensive mouse from Logitech you get nothing more than you would from the cheapest in terms of packaging and whatnot.

I prefer to use keyboards that can't be broken.

What is the throw on MY switches?
The throw on MY switches? It's when you throw all your other crappy switches out the window because it's perfect.
I don't believe that any keyboard is better than another for gaming, as long as you're used to it. Also, I'm not particularly against Razer, I've got a mouse from them and it's pretty nice. My brother has the BWU, and it doesn't seem like too bad of a keyboard, although personally I don't care so much about the backlight. I find the font unique, and sometimes annoying if I would want to mix keycaps.

Totally agree here, cherry switches aren't gonna be any worse (or better) on a Razer than another keyboard...
main issue as i see it: people on GH tend not to fall for the stylized product gimmick for looks-at-the-cost-of-craftsmanship! Crappy keycaps, odd lighting, toy-look... then u get to the buggy software Zzz I never had a Razer kb but i had a Razer Deathadder mouse which felt great but was ruined with buggy resource intensive software (had issue where bright logo on mouse would not stop blinking no-matter the setting... it had to be defective!(?) lol),
my logitech g700 mouse on other hand is excellent and ALWAYS does what its supposed to do... Its a tool and the stylizing is all from the button and ergonomics (all black), basically the style IS the in thing itself and not vice versa
A logo is a symbol, and I think that we all can all agree that symbols, because they are pre-lingual are also pre-cognitive. They are an attempt to communicate some value at a pre-conscious level.Lacanian psychoanalysis + Jungian archetypes + Lévi-Straussian totemism = ... good logos for keyboards (?!)

I have a black widow ultimate silent that i abused for 2 years that is still going strong. So they arent that bad :P
it's just trend, 80% of the pro league players use it so surely people will follow because they think it's going to up THEIR GAME
But I still can't thank Razer enough for introducing me to a better world.

That's why sponsors do what they do. Though I feel like there's a lot of cm/corsair sponsored teams now.
No need to be mean, guys.

Dubious science at work here.
I wouldn't judge a whole line of products by a brand, at most, I'd just be cautious when dealing with brands with a less-than-solid rep.
Different strokes, different folks
No need to be mean, guys. You can laugh at Razer's marketing approach, and in hindsight, so can I, but I wouldn't be here on this forum with you, or working with Weyman up at WASD to put out my custom designs if it weren't for that fateful day in Best Buy, when I saw the Razer Mamba (which has always treated me poorly, but still has a place in my heart) and the following month when I went back for my first mechanical keyboard, the Black Widow Ultimate, with Cherry Blues.
Sure, I've had to fight to make use of my Mamba's warranty twice, and my BWU shat the bed only six months after purchase. But I still can't thank Razer enough for introducing me to a better world.
where is this GH Steam group that is playing CS:GO?http://steamcommunity.com/groups/geekhackcommunity\
I play CS:GO competitively and would love to play with you guys!! :)
Elitism is my least favorite part of this hobby.I don't see how its being an Elitist to not like the worst keyboard on the market. (Literally, 5 dollar rubber domes have lasted me longer than the Blackwidow.)

Other guy was being a **** first.
Maybe he was trying to be helpful and from what we know, and from the way OP told the story, he played the guy out to be a prick.
You can't blame someone for not having the same knowledge as you in a field you excel in, that's just immature.
I agree that we should take the matter lightly. Poking fun isn't elitism. Sure we're putting somebody down, but if a guy has no interest in learning about the thing he's bragging about, then we're not judging him for his ignorance, we're judging him for his willful ignorance.
Maybe it's immature, but elitism isn't this. If we took the interest in keyboards so seriously that we would couldn't find a chuckle when somebody is being a douchenozzle, then it would lead us to true elitism. A place where few want to tread.
I think elitism is a problem in the geek world, as a whole, but I haven't seen a problem with it here on GeekHack, or in the elite keyboard community at large. People seem more interested in enlightening, and bringing more people into this amazing world, than guarding the knowledge and shutting people out.
I think you need to let people loosen up a bit, because you're being elitist about your ability to not be elitist.

Exactly. If you want to see true elitism, talk to a die hard otaku who brags about all the animes you didn't watch...or just go to an anime convention in general. Seriously...I was about to deck this kid in the face talking about how he knows more about Fullmetal Alchemist than I do, and I was twice the size of him. I just responded with a nice, "I could eat your face, throw it up, and serve it to your mommy...but you smell so I won't reduce my dignity by chewing you up."
There really isn't that many people that go around saying, "MY BOARD IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOURS! DON'T EVEN USE A COMPUTER ANYMORE!"
This is honestly the nicest bunch of geeks on this forum compared to gaming or fandom boards.

I kinda wish that Apple made a mechanical keyboard.
It would probably be the same quality as the BWU, and cost $500.
But we would get about 40 million more people joining the mech keyboard folk!

That has to one of your best post so far. ;)
No, it would prolly not be bad quality, perhaps up to Razer (or even CM) standard, but it's be priced like a HHKB for sure.... ;)
Well, I certainly wouldn't say it would be bad quality, it would probably be of great quality, as most Apple products are! That being said, I'm sort of glad that mechanical keyboards are still a niche market, because it adds a sense of exclusivity to owning one..... or many ^-^
Luckily the Paterson microcenter is 5 mins away from my job.
Selling Topre in stores would ruin the "exclusiveness" feeling :(.
