I hate Neymar

uh, you are supporting your neighbor Croatia right?

I'm generally for the underdog so I don't cheer for Brazil that much. Besides I really hate the fanatical screaming that some of my female relatives do for Brazil (usually for some footballer with weird hair) so I love cheering against Brazil just to be different.

I don't know if you are an avid football fan or not but Neymar has a reputation for being a little ***** that he is thus why I hate him, he is a great player though. I am an England fan but I am thinking that Argentina is going to take this one. Brazil are way overhyped for what they are capable of. Since my country never was and never will compete or pass the group stages for what its worth I chose to be completely non bias and just enjoy the games along with some friends and some beer.
ps. I hate fifa with passion too!

Heh. Judge.

I think Brazil will crack under pressure. Out in the semi finals (revised my above prediction). I think Portugal will suck after Ronaldo gets injured. Out in the quarters. An African team will get to the semis and lose. Cameroon i hope. England will go out in the quarter finals. Spain will lose to Argentina in the final.

My Superbowl predictions were hideously off, so hopefully these go a bit better.

Title: Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup

Well, after the first game, it was obvious that at least one referee has been bribed, or at least he has so much fear in the citizens of Brazil that he felt compelled to make calls in their favor.

I dislike big sporting events like the World Cup and the Olympics, because often times the governments spend tens of billions of dollars with few actual benefits for the citizens but some prestige for the country.  And government officials and their friends and a few sports teams always get a few handouts.  See Qatar and Russia.

Regardless of my dislike of the authoritarian nature of these events, I do enjoy the entertainment aspect.  When you put all the emotions and grandstanding aside, that's what modern professional sports is these days: an entertainment industry.  When you look at sports from that angle, you get less emotional about the whole thing.

Enough of that schpeel.  I like the Germans, Italians, and Argentines this time around.  The era of Spain looks to be winding down.  Brazil has some great players, but it looks like they need some gifts from the referee to win their first game and they do not play team football as well as some other teams.  Then again, the home country advantage has already begun to show.

I would hope that my home country figures out a way to at least tie Ghana this time around.  Ghana beat the USA in the last two World Cups, and our team could not compete with their speed, strength, and team play.  I say park the bus and play the counter attack.  But I'm just an armchair quarterback.

as a hockey fan who has little patience for the theatrics of soccer in general and the world cup particular, i find that my favorite part is how much material it gives me to tease my soccer die hard friends. FIFA, diving, corruption, diving, protests, the fact that his team (england) has no hope, diving.

the world cup really is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to making fun of soccer.

La Squadra Azzurra is my adopted team, so I'm happy today.   England is still over-rated I guess.  Wayne Rooney did nothing once again.  He's the last of the "golden generation", I think, which was neither golden, nor a generation, nor good.  USA will make it out of el Groupo del Morto, but then will lose first game in second round.  Japan should be a good game.  I have to switch to futball mode, since I'm actually still trying to recover from last night, and trying to figure out how the Rangers could play so hard and lose the Stanley Cup 4-1.  LA is not that good, tbh.  Unless the Rangers were all thinking about Gretzky's daughter the whole series.  That would do it.

oh and F*ck FIFA.  Those bloated, corrupt sh!tbags should be left outside to be eaten by those giant killer ants in the Amazon jungle.

I can’t tell you how strongly I agree.

International sporting events are all huge expenses with little tangible benefits for the host country.

It is inevitably dominated by corrupt and arrogant government officials who waste the people’s money for a tiny bit of prestige.

The entertainment factor is there; I do enjoy it. But I remember, it’s entertainment. There’s no philosophic or intellectual best here, nothing is objective. Refereeing has always been biased towards the home country; FIFA is extremely adverse to having the home country lose early matches because they want to keep the interest levels up in the home country.

Remember how referees were bending backwards for South Korea some years back when they hosted? Even if it is Brazil, a nation practically guaranteed to reach the semis every World Cup, they can’t afford to run the risk of having Brazil crash out early. Already matches are being played to half-full stadiums and anti-World Cup people are demonstrating;

As for FIFA, it is a sleazy organization comparable to Goldman Sachs. It’s not about the Beautiful Game for FIFA officials; it is about getting bribed, wined and dined, treated like kings, etc.

Brazil - Croatia = Begging

Italy - England = Weak

So far it's pretty savage.

I remember that South Korea sham.  Those refs had definitely been bribed, and everybody knew it.  That should have been Spain's trip to the quarters.

But dammit, I love watching the games, regardless of all the BS.

we were watching the england match while I was packing today. My room-mate is a spanish interpreter, so we were wathing the non-english version.

Surprisingly enough, it was pretty easy to follow. Syllables per second increase as they get closer to the net, and if someone scores you know for sure. Very exciting.

Not so good athletic preparation (too many players with cramps) and because they're for the most part very young so need time to grow as a team

Because England isn't a good football team. Look at the players in the team. Everyone in the team plays in Premier League, but they still aren't the best players in Premier League and Premier League isn't even the third best League in Europe. England have to much faith and population to believe that they would win the cup

I've always enjoyed Ghanas games but I think todays game is tad bit too late for me. Thank god I got Wednesday off, two interesting late night games tomorrow.

I really feel bad for the teams in Honduras' group, it's like they're not even trying to play football, just trying to injure the opponents. At least that's the feel I got from the yesterdays game. France was really ****ing anemic though, doubt they'll even make it to the top 8.

Portugal is putting a stinker, and they seem to be going off in droves.  One red card and two injuries.

Pepe will be out against the USA.  If the Americans can actually get a result against the Black Stars, it could put them in good standing for getting out of the group.  With the game against Portugal in Manaus, anything can happen in that heat and humidity.

Germany is looking like a world beater.  No way USA can beat them, or even tie.  Portugal, hmm.  Did they get steamrolled by a great team, or are they beatable?  Regardless of the strength of Portugal, however, Ghana is a must-win game for USA.  And I think it's a must-win for Ghana as well.  They cannot be hopeful about beating Germany either.  And Portugal will be tough game for them too.

Heat and humidity.  I'm sick of hearing about this.  To the delicate Northern Europeans, 75% humidity and 86F, I guess is like a bit of hell on earth.  But gimme a break, I've sweated my @ss off in July in Indiana, which has worse conditions.  Try 95F and 95% humidity.  Where do you find this?  Try Wash., D.C. in August.

Try Wash., D.C. in August.

Yea, I was reading that the England-Italy game was like 86F with 60% humidity.  And I was like, "Wait, what?  That's a problem?  That's the entire month of July in Indiana.  I was running 10 miles a day in that weather at the peak of my physical prowess."  Actually, that is the temperature and humidity right now, and I just walked around outside in my business casual while eating a thick slice of Tabasco-soaked pizza without breaking a sweat.  And I imagine the American players are used to such weather, considering our season spans the summer.

But the Portuguese and their European sensibilities could be a different story.

Apparently they have been using the white spray for free kicks for years in South American club football.

I don't know why it hasn't been implemented sooner. It's brilliant.
I believe that It's actually shaving foam but I am not sure

You got me making incorrect and ignorant statements.  But the blind patriotism flowing through my veins in speaking for me.

But  They were faking injuries to avoid playing in the heat and humidity of Manaus.  Obviously scared of the weather.

Mexico should have won that game.  A little more aggressiveness would've done it.  Too timid in first half.  Well for first 75 minutes really.  What was Kobe Bryant doing there?  I would be worried about @ssrape if I was a woman working in his hotel.

Well, USA has easiest road to next round in last 40 years.  All they really need to do is draw with Portugal and then lose to Germany (which is easy), but not too badly (which is hard).  Like 2-0 or better 1-0.  And they'll move on.  Germany will win all 3 of its games.  Portugal will probably lose 2.  So that means if USA can win-tie-lose its 3 games, then most likely they will beat Ghana in the tie-breaker criteria, and move on.   I saw some computer model on the internets which predicts this result with 67% chance of happening.  And you guys know that computer models are never wrong.

Portugal looks primed for collapse.  The biggest question is how Ronaldo's hair will hold up in the heat and humidity.

He just needs to get some of that new white foam/mousse from one of the referee's.  That stuff is like magic for your hair.  I'm using it right now.  I hope Portugal loses, but I hope everybody has a good hair day.

Also, Ghana is very good.  But if USA and Ghana are tied in the standings USA will go forward and Ghana will go home, because last tie-breaker is head-to-head play, which USA won.

The weather affects both teams, so it should really not be an issue.  Whoever is more fit will have the advantage.  If the team came early to Brazil and trained in a hotter locale, they should be acclimated to the heat and humidity and should not be fazed the conditions.

Another good example of this is Belgium, their team consist of key players in big clubs yet they could just barely win over Algeria. They're still most likely going to advance thanks to their easier than easy group.

Excited for todays games, especially how will Costa Rica fare against the mighty Italy. France - Switzerland should be pretty good too, sure Benzema scored a hattrick  but it was just Honduras after all, the swiss aren't exactly a top team but if they can get their **** together they might be able to give the french a run for their money and perhaps even take the win with a header if the game stays 0-0 for too long.

Well Spain is the reigning champion so obviously they're #1. France has had it rough for the couple of years (the whole shebang a few years back with the players refusing to play and such) They've gone through a bit of a metamorphosis and now have a pretty young team. Pogba, Varane, Matuidi and Griezmann are great up and coming players.

Belgium isn't bad as a team. They crushed Sweden in the game before the WC and Sweden ain't that bad. Though the Belgium team have a lot of expectations from the Belgium fans which make them fumble for example against Algeria. They didn't really play bad against Algeria either, Algeira had one shot on goal (the penalty) and Belgium controlled the match but have lack of real goalscoring opportunities. Just my opinion

Italy is not out.  They can move on to next round if they beat Uruguay.  They can do it, but not if they play like they did today.  If they draw with Uruguay, Uruguay moves on due to the tie-breakers.  First tie-breaker is goal differential, which Uruguay wins.  Second tie-breaker is total goals scored, which Uruguay wins again.  So if Italy wins, they move on, if they lose or tie, then they go home.

Uruguay does not have the goal differential tiebreaker.  Italy is at 0 goal differential, Uruguay is at -1.

Costa Rica earned that win.  The referee made a lot of calls in favor of Italy, and lots on no-calls on challenges that should have been free kicks.   Italy needs to be more creative in attack if they want to advance.  Balotelli alone up front may not be enough.  I will be interested to see what lineup Italy uses in their final group game.

Oh yea, the amount of offsides by Italy in that game was ridiculous.

It's difficult to express what i think in english.
We have hundreds of football schools, i bet that players begun to play from the age of 5 and now have a great international experience and earn $$$$$
But all i have seen today is a bunch of ghosts wandering without a single idea on the field and i haven't seen any reaction after  1-0.
Oh and we have still our top-goalscorer (Immobile) on the bench.
Anger...

Didn't see Ecuador's first game, but holy **** their game against Honduras was great. Fast and technical players. The game was so intense, constant tug of war from one end to another. Figured the teams would be evenly matched, but once again Honduras parked a bus in front of their goal and were content just trying to harpoon Ecuador's defense with long passes. And honestly their only good goal opportunity came from the defenders mistake which Costly used to great efficiency.

Sadly neither Ecuador or Honduras is going through the group stage. Did you watch France vs Swiss? Cause that was an awesome game! Do anybody know why the last goal was denied?

I stopped watching after 3 - nil but, apparently the clock ran out so the goal was denied. But yeah Ecuador got a bit unlucky with the Swiss / the Swiss got lucky against Ecuador and most likely they'll advance. There's always the off chance Ecuador will draw/win France and Honduras will win Switzerland.

why

Praise Allah, St. Patrick and St. Andrew that the perfidious Albions didn't make it! HAHA!

I am so sick of EPL; I'll support anything that isn't English. Really hate it the way EPL markets itself and monopolizes the soccer world and diverts resources from the domestic leagues of many countries making it hard for others to get funding.

I never expect too much of England. I try not to get too wound up or excited when things like this come around.

I think Argentina aren't actually going to be that good looking back at my predictions. Germany and Holland will be the ones to beat. France will get to the semis but get beaten soundly, because I think they've just had some easy opposition in their group.

I don't think their !group of life! matters, they still got to show their level. I think France played really well. They have a young team as well, so I think they are prime candidates to win 2018. I don't think you can win without a solid attack, and imo, these are the teams who have proven they can actually score fairly consistently:
-France
-Germany
-Holland
-Colombia
-Chile

Ball possession and defending until you make that one goal of the entire game just doesn't cut it these days.

Besides France, the European squads are looking rather underwhelming at the moment.  No other European team has put together two impressive games so far.

They probably are befuddled by the toilets swirling in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere.

Well yes but the change happened quite a bit ago, you could see that in 2010 @ South Africa and throughout 2008-2014 in Bundesliga.

The whole new style of football has emerged during these past few years and the results are most apparent in the recent Champions League results and games. Big clubs that haven't adapted yet are not succeeding; ManU, Barcelona, Milan, Juve, Inter etc.

Nah, well, it was heart-breaking to see that goal at 94:59, but it's not the end of the world.  In fact everything's going right on plan.  Win-Tie-Lose, is all the USA has to do in their 3 games, and they should squeak by.

Anyway USA should have won that game 2-0, but it's all good.

The best revenge would be for Portugal to bring their A-game and beat Ghana by a couple goals and the USA holds their own against Germany so the USA does not get haunted by Ghana for the third World Cup in a row.

But something tells me the soccer gods just like to torture the USA with that tiny African nation.

Heck, just scan their human rights record or record of breaking sanctions (trading with Russia or Cuba) or something.

You should be able to come up with a good reason to bomb them. If you can't, ask somebody in Crawford, Texas or Wyoming. These guys know how to deal with America's enemies.

umm, well bombing Portugal in retaliation for drawing the USA in a soccer game is a bit extreme.  I would leave 'ol GW Bush and 'ol Tricky **** Cheney out of it, tbh, they probably don't even know what soccer is.

However, while IMO bombing is over the top, I think a targeted drone strike on Crisiano Ronaldo might make the world a better place.  Just take out that one monumental douchebag, and leave the rest of the country alone.  Also that girlfriend can go too.  Maybe Seal Team Six is available for another mission?

Um, if you're talking about it being ok to take out Christiano Ronaldo just because he's a jerk, I'd say that going by such logic any terrorist who blew up the entire FIFA world cup, all teams, would be a good guy.

1/2 of all pro footballers and 2/3 of their WAGs aren't exactly nice enough to warrant giving a life jacket to if we were on a sinking ship. Not even if there were more than enough life jackets to go around.  ^-^

How many medical bills he payed he didn't have to? More than any football player in EU by far. I have friends that are fans and actually met him and can't say nothing but good things about him. First, I was joking about a drone strike on Ronaldo.  I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole, that was inspired by some late night scotch, and that other post about bombing Portugal.  Both were in bad taste, but I thought somebody would find them funny, I guess I was wrong.

Now let me address this candyflip person:   I'm not a football fan because I don't worship Ronaldo's ballsack?  Well, I dunno about that.  As for Ronaldo's so-called "charity", yes I know all about it.  People like you keep repeating the myth that Ronaldo is going around paying medical bills.  The only thing I can find for certain is that Ronaldo has paid for one brain operation for one boy in Spain.  Which allegedly cost 50,000 Euro's.  First, please note that Ronaldo got a tax-credit for this charity gift.  Second, please note that under Spain's public health system, Ronaldo may be entitled to full or partial reimbursement from the Spanish Treasury.  Also, please note that Ronaldo is worth more than 200,000,000 Euro's.  And that he makes 23,000,000 Euro's playing football every year, and another 50+ million Euro's from endorsements.  So paying 50K is not really much charity for somebody as rich as him.   It's a whopping 0.05% of his net worth!  That is the equivalent of you donating 0.10 Euro's.  Would that make you a hero?  Well, I dunno.  Maybe it would.  Please try to remember that Ronaldo donated the money to play on the sympathy of people like you, and to burnish his image which is one of being a self-righteous, greedy narcissist.

Most disturbing to me is that after Ronaldo gave the money for the Spanish boy' brain surgery, Ronaldo carved this zig-zag in his hair to brag about it.

Is this solidarity with a sick child?  Or blatant exploitation of a dying boy for the gain and glory of Ronaldo?  You should be more skeptical of your heroes, IMO.  I guess you like the way Ronaldo takes his pants off at every opportunity to show off his custom line of underpants?  I bet you're wearing your Ronaldo CR7 panties right now.  They make you just like him.  ;)

Well this has descended into something ****ing stupid and excessive.

You both need to chill out and stop the personal attacks on members of this forum and people you don't even know.

AS picture of CR swearing at paparazzi? Would you not get annoyed if someone was taking pictures of you and your SO when you were on holiday? Every day? Every time you go on holiday?

"But they're famous!" I hear you cry. "They should expect it" they call. Does a certain profession entitle people to invade your private life? Richard Branson doesn't have people follow him around the street and on holiday.

And a "douchebag picture" with him sat in a private jet wearing a vest and a hat with his arm round his gf? What stereotypes do YOUR clothes convey to people who have never spoken to you before?

I believe he is a genuine person. He gained his reputation for being a bit of an asshat at Manchester United, but then everyone does. Since moving, he has matured, and I truly believe the cut in his hair is showing solidarity.

Helping someone for whatever reason is better than not helping for whatever reason. I am not CR fan, I don't care about his haircuts and whatnot I see the positive side of the things. Why are you even calculating his wealth, does it even matter? Even if it is done only for publicity (which I doubt but I can imagine how can it pop in your mind when you clearly don't like a person) it is done and bottom line is that its a good thing.

Uh...Let's go USA!  Beat Germany!

Just like in the good old days huh?

War is never a victory.

Very wise thing to say. I get sick of the self-pleasuring that the victors of WW2 like to do every anniversary.

Recently it was, what, their 70th for Normandy? And 70th for V-E? And in a few months, we're going to hear of 70th V-J?

If you think about it, pretty much most of our modern world was shaped by WW2's aftermath and the victors. They are strongly invested in the outcome, and work hard to defend it from any challenge. But I won't call their narrative the only narrative around, and with the passing of time, their claims become much less relevant.

In the eyes of a significant number of people, al-Naqba (foundation of Israel) is much more important. I don't necessarily agree. Just noting here that lots of people don't buy into the international arrangements created by the victors of ww2, and these people are getting more numerous by the day. Some of these people work very hard to create their own arrangements. Latest is Iraq, on the verge of splitting back into its 3 traditional provinces each with a different population.

On another note, England is now on the verge of crashing out of World Cup with nothing but defeats. Uruguay is holding them to a draw so far. If their military performed the same way as their soccer team, it would be a significant contribution to world peace.

Congrats to Italy for playing for the tie and then paying for it.

I like how at the end of the game, Italy was attacking at will with only ten men.  They had that capability the whole game, but opted to play conservatively.

That'll be the match to watch. Two German coaches. Odds of course are on Germany, but the US has been on a roll and US soccer has really improved from the bad old days when some US people didn't even know that soccer is an English word.

This world cup was full of surprises and 90% of my predictions have been absolutely off. The USA will put up a good fight like they did in their first two matches. But individually they are the weaker team. Some of their players are really slow, which could be a real handicap against Germany's playstyle. And the match against Ghana has shown that they had some serious fitness issues in the last 25 minutes. But they have a good spirit and several players with german background who will be extra motivated.

Really like the idea of Germany 4 US 0.

And for fitness issues, do you think the climate is a reason? Germans are not used to playing in a tropical locale like Fortaleza (which is much more similar to Ghana in terms of heat and humidity). But Germany and US would be about equal in any Brazilian city.

Talent wise, the US is the weaker team against every team in the group.  But they have been putting up good fights against these other teams, and I expect them to do the same.  I think the German defense has some weak spots that the US team could exploit.

I don't think a player's origin is the answer to that question. Just take a look at Ecuador's performance. I'd rather suspect the USA's deficites in the fitness department in more individual reasons like age and the fact that the US Team has several players who play in leagues that don't compete on the highest international level. But we will see. Germany's offensive game will be harder to control because of Schweinsteiger who will be playing for Khedira, but also more vulnerable in the defense. I still wouldn't underestimate the US team. They played a very good tournament so far.

I told you guys not to worry about USA.  All they needed to do was Win-Draw-Lose their 3 games, and they were going to move on to play in the elimination round.

Anyway, I'm happy USA is moving on, but I'm even happier that 'ol Cris Ronaldo is going home.  Maybe, on his way to the airport he threw some spare change at a favela, or maybe he paid for some beggar boy's medical bills before leaving Brasil, but I doubt it.  He's already aboard his private Gulfstream G650 cruising at 900km/hr, heading back to Spain.

Belgium's group played pretty weak. Doesn't make a huge difference against who to play. And Algeria is not really Algerian. It's more like France's second squad.

While it would have been nicer for the USA to play Algeria, I still like our chances against Belgium.  The Belgians have loads of talent, but have been squeaking by these teams based on the skill of individual players rather than solid team play.  Some of the players did not even want other players on the team, and the coach has been messing with the lineups every game, which cannot inspire confidence.

Meanwhile, the US played three tough teams and I think they will be ready for what the Belgians throws at them.

The penalty was an awful call.  Total dive.  Robben went down before there was even contact.  But he sold it well.

I don't think it was a conspiracy, But the referee made a make-up call for at least a couple non calls on fouls that maybe should have been penalties in the first half.

In my view, Robben was diving so much in the game, he should have received a yellow card.  Then that final dive never would have occurred.

I just hate a game to end like that.

Ofc it is never ideal for a referee to compensate for the lack of earlier calls. On one hand, I think he should be able to compensate if he made a bad call, anything else would be unfair and make it an even harder job. On the other hand, in cases such as this his compensation came late, so late in fact that it left close to no time at all for Mexico to have time to act and score again. They went into the late game with an idea that they could defend their win and late compensatory calls like that can mess up a teams game plan.
Title: Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup
Post by: vivalarevolución on Sun, 29 June 2014, 14:26:46
Robben repeated diving pissed me off more than anything.  He spent the whole game trying to sell the dive, finally got the ref to bite on it at a crucial moment, and it won the game for them.

In a lot of these World Cup games, it seems like the referees are not establishing limits among the players early, so they keep playing rough or trying to sell the penalty, and it ends up with a questionable call in the end.

If these refs busted out the yellow card early, it might set the tone and prevent these sorts of mishaps.

Or a brain transplant.  A 27-year-old man biting people.   He just needs some women with the same fetish, and get his kicks that way.
or those lego toys which are especially designed to be bitten by toddlers. they are considerably easier to get than a woman with biting fetish.

Most of these footballers, especially the higher paid ones, have the maturity level of toddlers anyway.  ^-^

Remember how Zizou screwed all of France over when he lost it and head butted Materazzi? A 34 year old man, having played god knows how many stressful matches at international level, won Allah knows how many awards, and a few words from a rival footballer can cause him to lose his temper.

One of the top 20 footballers in history, and Z lost the World Cup and an opportunity to exit his career on a fantastic note in a few seconds of anger.

That loss was crushing.  Tim Howard played out of his mind again.  But they gave them too much wide open space and you could just feel that it was going to happen at some time.

The block party in my downtown was fun, though.

Courtois also is an amazing goalkeeper.  So much amazing goalkeeping in this World Cup, with Howard, Ochoa, Navas, Courtois, and others.

Such a heartbreaker.  Gosh darnit.

Although I like looking at the Costa Ricans play, I hope they don't get past the Dutch. I am hoping for a clash of the Low-Countries in the semi-finals. I believe Belgium stands a chance against Argentina, based on both teams last performance.

Mexico was robbed.  They should've gone to the overtime.  That Penalty Kick in the last minute was bullcrap.  I wish demik was still here to share my outrage.  Our Mexican brothers were the victims of a FIFA conspiracy.  I am sure of it.  He is too, whereverthe  he is right now.

Not that I am that much of a soccer fan, but people keep concluding the wrong things about that penalty. The first time he went down, was legit. The second one was a classical schwalbe. But because of that schwalbe, the referee decided to make up for the first one that was clearly and most definitely not a schwalbe but a legit penalty. But people seem only to remember the second one, that indeed clearly was a schwalbe. And it is easy to see why: Robben himself said in the interview afterwards with NOS (Dutch television broadcasting company): "I am thankful that that penalty come. But the first one, I shouldn't have done that. Stupid of me. Lousy action of mine." But of course, the media quickly decided to explain the story as: "he admitted that he made a schwalbe, oh the terror".

54 warnings given. A knee to the spine and not even a yellow card. Refs were biggest problem that match. Now Brazil has to face Germany without Neymar and Silva; two crucial key players in both defense and offense. But it should make for a very good match still since Germany hasn't been really stream rolling through the competition either.

The refs really let that game get out of control.  In my view, they have been letting that happen too many times in this tournament.  Perhaps they have instructions to "let them play."

Part of it has to do with the origins of the referees.  A lot of these guys officiate in small-time leagues with less refined quality of play.  Australia, Chile, etc.  I just cannot imagine they can adjust to officiating the level of play at a World Cup without making a mistake.

As discriminatory as it may be, the World Cup referees need to be selected from the top leagues, the leagues that send the teams deep into the Champions League and the Club World Cup.  Regardless of how good these referees are in their domestic league, the type of soccer they see at home does not compare to the quality and style at the World Cup.

Also, FIFA needs to pay these referees enough to prevent them from being persuaded with a bribe and provide them tight security to prevent threats to their life.  Perhaps dip into that $1 billion FIFA trust fund.

This guy.  I will miss the first half at work, but scoot home and catch the second half.  The second half is always more exciting, anyways.

Pulling for Germany.  I picked them to win it all in my pub tournament bracket.

Also, considering that Brazil built their game around Neymar, I think it may be tough for them to adjust.  The supporting cast will need to step up.

The ones to blame for the total defeat are the Brazilians.

No matter how good the Germans (or any side) are, as long as their opposition is a coherent team, working together and trying their best, it's really not easy to get this kind of score in a competitive international match.

Shame to the Brazilian players. They weren't good sports and weren't willing to play properly. Shame on them. Lots of people paid big money for tickets or the TV rights (Singapore has the world's most expensive world cup TV package), and we were denied a real game.

I think some Brazilian players will not be showing their faces around local bars for a long, long time. Brazil is a macho country, and there's no way to keep all Brazilians from expressing their displeasure with this farce.

Although they played efficiently and well, I don't think Germany won because they played godlike or anything like that. I'd say Brazil were unorganized in the beginning, and Germany took advantage (as expected from a good team). I am just glad that no one individual in Brazil can be blamed for the loss as the entire team was unorganised. Had there been one to blame, that player would have to leave the country under police escort pretty much.

It doesn't really matter if you're German. I hope you guys crush the Netherlands in the finals, providing they beat Argentina. I've admired Germany's play ever since their loss to Serbia in the 2010 World Cup Group Stage. Germany has one of the best coaches a team could ask for. :thumb:

Yeah, brazil gave up 3-4 chances early on. Lesser teams would only have been able to make 1 or 2 goals out of those and the game would still have been open, but Germany was very efficient and pretty much closed the game right there.

I am very curious as to what will happen in Brazil now and onwards. Riots? How will they react towards the team? Will they forever be labelled as "that team" which no one shall mention by name? Murder?

It's not the end of the world.  If you've been watching closely, Brazil was over-rated and over-hyped.  Some people have been saying it all along.  Notably Alexi Lalas on ESPN, who was right about Brazil from the beginning.  [Lalas said Brazil was struggling in every game because they just weren't that good.]  Germany finally exposed Brazil as being not a very good team.  But, one has to remember that Brazil was playing without their 2 best players Neymar and Silva.  Plus, it was total BS that Colombia's Zuniga did not get punished for breaking Neymar's back.  But, with that said, getting destroyed 7-1, is totally embarrassing, and shows a lack of character on the Brazil team.  They looked totally defeated after the second German score, and looked like they all wanted to just cry and go home at that point, and of course that caused them to let in 3 more quick goals before half-time.  I've never seen professionals in any sport act like that, in my lifetime.

Anyway, Brazil was not that good, but they also weren't that bad either to lose 7-1.   They should have put up a better fight than that.

I re-watched the first 30 minutes on the WatchESPN replay.  What a great display by the Germans.  And pitiful by the Brazilians.  Perhaps they were more mentally crushed by the losses than anybody realized.

Anyways, this works great for my pub bracket because I picked Germany to win it all against the Argentines.  Not having Di Maria will hurt Argentina, but hopefully with Aguero back he can inject some speed and movement into their offense.  The Argentine defense has been stellar this Cup, and the Dutch have had trouble scoring in the knockout rounds, so hopefully that trend continues.

We just witnessed a spanking that will haunt Brazil long after all of us are dead. If I hadn't watched the game I would have thought it was a score from baseball.

Two missing players should not make THIS much of a difference. And only one of them was a defensive player. If you're defense is crap because of one player less you should rethink about your tactics...

This reveals a huge Latin weakness that the German team has always been able to exploit for decades.

The Latins depend too much on charisma. When Brazil has 3 or more gifted players, they'll find ways to hammer their opponents, and don't need to rely on teamwork, organization, a strong mental game, etc. The coach doesn't get to rule.

When Brazil loses its 2 best players the rest of the guys just don't know how to cope.

The Germans are truly like a machine. While it is sometimes used insultingly, it also means that the weaker German players don't wind up serving their alpha goalmakers. Everyone always has a place and knows what to do, in the best German engineering and division-of-labour traditions.

Of course the Brazilians are a total contrast. The country is in shambles (compared with Germany). The wealth gap, the social divisions, Brazilians don't have their act together as a nation despite their talent and resources. They didn't even get their stadiums built in time. (In contrast, World Cup 2006 was fantastically organized and probably upped German reputation even more.)

Can I call it Audi versus Maserati; BMW versus Ferrari? On straights of only 200km, the Italians win. If you have an endurance road race spanning all kinds of environments on different continents for 100,000km, the Italians will break down.

If you buy a Maserati or a Ferrari to make an endurance road race you have same serious problems.

Defeats like this usually lead to change in a positive way. Not so long ago Germans invented the word "Rumpelfüßler" for their team, which pretty much described their limited abilities dealing with the ball and realised you can't compete with strong physical traits alone. Though not as bad as the Germans back around year 2000, Brazil has to improve in the creative department. I'm pretty sure they will come back and play beautiful football again.

I'm actually very interested in seeing who will win if it comes down to penalty shootouts.

Germans normally win the penalty shootout, but because the Dutch and the Deutsch are nearly the same culturally, Germans have no advantage over Niederlanders when it comes to a mind game.

It would be pretty funny if the Argentines can beat the Germans in a penalty shootout though. That would make for a perfect world cup, full of surprises and upsets. I bet most bookies in UK will be bankrupt if Argentines can crush Germany 3-0 on penalties.

Germany has become good at attacking.

Argentina has become good at penalties.

So disappointed with last night's game... IMO Holland played better than Argentina and deserved to win, but they failed to swap out their goalie before the time was up and it cost them the game. Would have been nice to have two European teams in the final.

The German team is playing very well and I strongly suspect they'll beat Argentina, especially if Argentina play the same as they did last night.

Or as Gary Lineker put it: "Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win."

I would not discount the Argentine defense.  They have played very well for all the games, except that Nigeria game, and shut down teams with plenty of firepower like Belgium and Netherlands.  They just do what they have to do.

And if Di Maria is back for the final to take some heat off Messi, they might actually score a goal this time around.

When Brazil was poor it played far better soccer. The favela kids had to play soccer well to rise up in society, so you had plenty of creative play.

These 10 years have been great for the economy as a whole, a disaster for social consensus (due to income inequality).

This tournament Brazil has been acting like uncoordinated favela thugs. It's very disappointing. But it also reflects their larger social malaise. The country is incredibly rich but the way they coordinate their resources is borderline retarded. Their soccer team shows a similar problem - utter lack of coordination and teamwork.

Argentina has really gotten much better in defense. I'm still for Germany, but I think the Argentines have played well this tournament and would be deserving champions. The humiliation might even be good for Brazilians; they should reexamine the way they do things.

If the opponent team plays sloppy but still somehow manages to not take goals they sometimes get lucky and score a goal themselves. Happens often enough. The final score does not always tell the full story.

Heh.

Yeah, I was way off. But right about Brazil :D

In my pub bracket, the only wrong pick I made was Mexico over Netherlands.   And that was a good pick for 87 minutes.   Besides that, my bracket is unblemished.  Now I need Germany to win.  Maybe I'll get a prize.

So did you win something? :p

Nothing against Messi (no doubt he's one of the greatest players of all time) but I don't think he deserved the golden ball award.

Well, at least it's less ridiculous than giving the award to Neymar(keting), and seriously, there's some chance they would if Messi weren't there

I doubt it. If Brazil made it to the finals and Neymar was still playing then yeah I can see that.
But Robben or James Rodriguez should have won.

I don't know.  They have not called me yet.  If I do not get some call before tomorrow, I will call them.  I had to be at least in the top 3.

Def should have been Robben.  I don't think any player influenced games as much as him.  Rodriguez was good, but once he played against a team of top talent (Brazil), he was less effective.  Messi kinda got it by default.

The Golden Glove was tough to call.  So many great goalkeeper performances at this World Cup: Howard, Ochoa, Navas, Courtois, probably did not list a few.  Neuer is nuts with running out of his box and making plays on the ball.  He is like an 11th outfield player out there.  Courtois makes goalkeeping look so easy that he might as well be eating a sandwich while stopping shots.
