I feel like I'm nearing my endgame, and I was wondering where everyone else is at or wants to be at with their keyboard collection.
I have a total of 3 (1 MX, 2 Topre), but I want to end up with 2 (one of each). I'm at this strange crossroads where I don't know if I should sell my FC660C anymore because my Topre novelty keycap collection jumped from 0 to 2, and my incoming HHKB doesn't have enough room for them and a Christmas set. And if I do stay with 3, I'll have more keyboards than I need for my desktop and laptop. I would like more perspective from people who have been in this game for longer and have thought more about this.

I feel like I'm nearing my endgame
hah!
A lot of people rotate between keyboards, keeping them fresh. That way, you can have as many as you can store.
-
Only other keyboards I want are a Model F (of any variety, preferably a 122) and a Topre (preferably a NovaTouch, if they ever come out).
Other than that, I'm perfectly content with what I have.
-
I know the number is > 40, but I don't really want to inventory them all.
You don't want to see my closet.
-
If you actually use them, it would be hard to justify more than about a dozen.
If you buy them as investments, as many as you can afford.
If they are collectors' items, about triple the amount you have display space for.
If you aren't an idiot, 1, your favorite.
-
I had about 15, and now I have just 2. I'm content.
-
If you aren't an idiot, 1, your favorite.
Can pretty much agree with this, but I say one per computer is reasonable.
-
I have two now. I had many, that I sold after I tried them.
-
I own "a few" currently. I'd like to own "a few" more in the future. Between MX, BS, and topre there are enough variants and alternate layouts that I don't really have any two that I consider redundant. They each are nice for their own purposes, and I rotate between them depending on my mood.
-
A few to use + an active collection
-
I guess it wouldn't hurt to own a couple more! I have been curious about the 55g Realforce and Korean customs...
This is going to be a long journey haha

That's the spirit! RIP clacktalk's wallet.

I need 3. A silent one for work, a clicky one for typing, and a linear one for gaming.
-
I would love to own and keep at least 8, currently I have only 2 boards. While I'm pleasantly content, too much of a good thing is just a good thing :D
Welcome
-
I have gone through more keyboards than I can count (I was into keyboards before I got into the mechanical version). See sig for current lineup (I also have an Apple aluminum keyboard that I use on my recording computer).
Previously I've gone through a Das Keyboard, 3 Filcos, 2 QFRs, 3 RealForces, a HHKB, another FC660C, 3 Poker X's, 3 ErgoDoxes, a Matias Tactile Pro 3, a Unicomp Ultra Classic, two Dell AT101Ws, and probably a few more I can't remember. That's just since joining GH in 2010. Before that I'd gone through pretty much all the MS Ergo boards and Razer boards, a Creative Fatal1ty keyboard, a few EluminX boards, and a bunch of things like iRocks and Auravision.
I'm not sure when I'll stop. I love typing way too much. Next up: AcidFire's Axios/Nexus, the Keyboard.io Model 01, and (just because I have a soft spot in my heart for chiclet-style scissor switches), probably a Razer DeathStalker.
-
I know the number is > 40, but I don't really want to inventory them all.
You don't want to see my closet.
I've seen it. It's glorious.
How many do I want? They call me Ash Ketchum. I keep finding something new and interesting and fun that I need to try. Think I've got about 10-15 right now? (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59025.0)

I've owned as many as 7 keyboards at once. I've since given my Poker II to my mother to use, cannibalized my g710+ for parts, and I'm in the process of selling my Shine 3.
Ever since I got my KUL w/ clears, I haven't felt driven to use/buy anything else.
In my opinion, get just what you need. Figure out what your endgame is, and stop there.
-
Ever since I got my KUL w/ clears, I haven't felt driven to use/buy anything else.
Just wait... the hunger will grow. Eventually, one day, you will see a new board, and something deep down inside you will snap. And you will be consumed by it, the ravenous need to feed that hunger. And you will know no peace until that beast is satiated.
-
I want to own one.
I have more than 10. No control...
-
My dream stash would be :
2 x HHKB Pro 2 Type-S
2 x Poker II
2 x IBM Model M (for the workbench)
1 x Duck Viper (can't wait for that little beast)
1 x KUL-87 w/ Clears
****.. I want a RF 55g and that new leo f660C with the printed dye subs too.
:'(
-
I currently own 3, but I've recently made a rule for myself that for every new keyboard I get, I must sell one of my prior ones. I'm still a college student, so I don't have tons to spend on keyboards, I don't even own a single novelty/artisan cap. I look forward to when I get a real job I can venture further down into the rabbit hole. :)
-
I have 4 (had 5 at max and sold 1). I don't need/want more keyboards, but my love for the model F got me to the conclusion that I want one with a better layout and these are much harder to find and harder on the budget. And I would like to try an ergonomic one with split hands. Hard decisions since I don't want to spend much more, so I will need to trade sell some stuff to get some new stuff or invest from time to time.
On a useful basis, I need only 3, 1 for the job, 1 for home, 1 as backup!
-
currently own 3 and they all get stroked almost daily.
mx greens- for when im home alone and can make a ton of noise
topre- for gaming
mx browns- when the gf is asleep and making any form of noise is liable to start world war III
with that said, i am looking into another board, however i havent narrowed my list down to exactly what yet. maybe a kustom? brb googling korean broads boards :p
-
Not sure, but currently 20+
-
more than 11
i own 11 right now
-
I'm new to this whole scene so I'm happy with my Filco for now. We're still in that initial honeymoon period.
I've got the GMK Dolch set and some thick PBT Leopolds on the way though, so those should keep me happy for a while. The only other switches that interest me currently are MX clears but they're a pain to get hold of so I may just wait until I can afford a custom board and work on it as a project.
3:)
-
Currently around 10, still wanna get realforce 55g so it's already +1, ducky mini seems tempting so let's count it as +2, additionally i need to grow for ergodox so it's already +3. And finally my dream board which someday I'll make at my own when finally I'll have enough time to make custom black alu case, cherry mx blue + white backlight + dsa + usb hub inside + fully programmable + detachable cable and ................ damn it.......... so yeah. To sum up there's no minimum never ever.
-
I'm somewhere around 25. There are still a few more I'd like to own but I probably won't bother
-
too many............
-
I don't really have a count or number of keyboards I want to own. I know for sure I will eventually own a GON NS 87. I have no intention of giving up my Filco or Phantom. I'm working on building another Phantom, an ErgoDox, and I'm probably going to start building a 60% board soon. I would also like to try Topre as well since there seem to be so many ravenous fans around here. So that's like 6 I can think of right now.
I started out by convincing myself (and the wife) that I would just buy a Filco Ninja with reds and that would be it. I also had no interest in artisan caps ... until the first BroBot V2 sale.

The correct number of keyboards to own is established by the following formulas:
Number of keyboards currently owned = n
Number of keyboards wanted = N
Number of keyboards which will cause your spouse/significant other to divorce/leave you = p
Solve for N, where N=n+1 and N=p-1

^^ this...if I was single in my current life situation with no family commitment I would buy ALL the keyboards :P

The hard part is knowing p before getting to p!
-
I'm starting to think my ideal would be something like 3. Currently have 11 too many :))
-
Ideally one per desktop, so two. (And spares, many spares.)
-
One big problem for me is that I have quite a few switch types that I really like, even though some of them are essentially impossible to find in straight-ANSI layout.
Edit - as I started doing a mental inventory, I hit 2 dozen quickly and am not near finished.
And, I have never owned any Topre, ever, and currently own only 1 Cherry.
-
I'm down to 3 right now, and I have one left to get rid of (included in the 3). Once I sell my realforce off, I'll be buying another 55g realforce, and I REALLY want to buy an HHKB layout GON 60%.
-
I definitely have over 40 keyboards, maybe about 50. At one point, I had 64 boards.
I'd like to get down to ~5 by the end of this summer. ErgoDox for home use, TypeMatrix 2030 for travel, and some extra stuff I use only every now and then, like an Access-IS keypad, a Cherry G80 switch-tester keyboard and Noppoo Choc Mini for gaming.

I have to disagree once again. :))
I think it should be N = p - n - 1 , which in your form would be p = n + N + 1 , rather than subtracting the 1. The way you have it implies that the current number plus the number wanted is actually higher than the threshold for the wife getting mad, but the way my braing is imagining it you'd want the current plus wanted to be one fewer than the threshold. Please correct if I'm wrong. :)
But anyway, this is all irrelevant to single people! My desired number of keyboards is infinite according to this!
-
>40????

I'm in HaaTa's apartment and I see >40 that he hasn't even taken pictures of yet.
-
It started with just 1 and now I'm nearing 20. Good chunk of which are model m variants. ;D

You are correct, my error.
But how do we count keypad in all that? are they considered 15% of a keyboard? Then does a full size keyboard counts as more than a TKL or 60%?
Hum, worth some thinking here :-\

IMO, I would only count something with alphas as being a keyboard. A numpad is an accessory to me, and meant to supplement. And typically you'd pair it with a TKL or 60%, so the two of them together would equal one "full" keyboard. But that's just me, I'm sure someone will disagree. :P
-
I'd like to own 3, a full keyboard, a 60% and a 75%. I've already got the full and I'm about to order a Poker 2 but first I have to decide what color and switches I want. Decisions Decisions.
-
Id love to get a HHKB Pro JP Black and a TEX Yoda.
-
I'd like to have two; my main, and my backup.
This isn't exactly a poor man's game, so I've been heading steadily to my end game setup.
-
As many 60% boards as I can get my hands on! Currently that's only 3..
I'd like to sell off everything else but I've never sold anything online before.

Razer BWTE /w Oranges / Noppoo Choc Mini /w Reds and my HHKB on the way.

but I want to end up with 2 (one of each)
this. I'm deciding whether or not I should buy a cherry mx board, after having sold 3; currently I only have my HHKB, so hopefully I'll wait for a 60% board with mx clears to come out (paradise v60) or something else hmm

We're already on page 2 (50 posts/page) and so few 20+ hoarderds... T_T So mainstream.

Less

Haha. If I didn't get rid of anything ever, I would probably have 70+ Cherry G80 models now along with 20 or so other various MX boards.
-
I think a "collection" probably starts around 12 keyboards. At 12, you pretty much have every kind of keyboard worth collecting. Next I would say if you wanted to build a "serious" collection, you need about 25 keyboards. 25 is the number of keyboards you will need if want to have say for example, all the different permutations of the same keyboard, like all versions of Topre, and/ or all the MX switches, and a few others like IBM BS and a vintage Cherry or two. Above 25 keyboards, you are building a "legendary" collection. This is a great thing, don't get me wrong, but now you are venturing into extreme territory, and you will need to devote some serious space and money to your collection. I would say the upper bound for a truly legendary collection is probably around 50. Above 50 keyboards, you are hoarding more than collecting, and you should probably sell some of them so that others can enjoy them. But that's my opinion. Maybe your upper limit is 100? I won't tell you that you're wrong.
How can you get to 25 or 50 or 100 keyboards? It's easy. IMO a truly "serious" collection of keyboards would contain at least the following:
IBM Model M BS keyboard, at least one, but probably 2-3 or more.
Cherry Vintage keyboards: one of each at least of G80-1800 and G80-3000, preferably H and S series, and hopefully a G80-5000 as well.
Dolch Cherry Keyboard
A Cherry ML keyboard
Filco's with MX Blues, Browns, Reds and Blacks.
Keyboards with the other MX switches: Greens, Clears, Greys.
At least one Leo, probably more.
Numpads: Cherry, Leo and Filco
Korean Kustom(s)
Poker(s)
Other 60% keyboard(s)
Ergo Dox
At least one keyboard with modified MX switches, like lubed Clears with gold 62g springs.
A Keyboard with buttery smooth Vintage MX Blacks.
At least one keyboard that you made yourself, like LZ GH, etc.
RealForce 87U's: Silent-Variable, 45g, and 55g.
HHKB Pro 2 Type-S and regular.
Alps keyboard, at least 1 clicky and 1 linear, but probably more.
At least one Back-lit LED keyboard (but don't let anybody know you have it). :p
As you can see, if you really want to do this hobby right, you can very easily get to 25 keyboards, and probably more.
However, with that said, 2 keyboards is an excellent "starter" collection. One Topre and one MX is a great way to begin. 2 keyboards, however, is simply not enough keyboards. I'm sorry, it's just not. 3? better. 5? Probably 5 is the right number for the OP, at this point in his life. But, I think 12 is probably where he will end up.
-
I think two is sufficient. One for home, one for portable. Eventually when I get a real job, I'll probably keep one at the office.
-
Haha. If I didn't get rid of anything ever, I would probably have 70+ Cherry G80 models now LOL.
LOL. Yes, I was going to guess that you have about 80-100 Cherry keyboards stored someplace. But if you insist that you sold some of them, I guess I will say I believe you, even though I don't.

A perfect example of the bizarre nature of collecting. I have a dozen Alps keyboards, many heavily modified and changed, and I have not even ventured into may peoples' favorites, such as classic green (I have a bag of modern XM greens that I will sell you very cheap!).
I have owned several Cherry keyboards, but they just don't turn me on. Currently, I have one, a G80-11900.
Roughly paralleling my music collection: I have several boxes containing hundreds each of "Rock" and "Jazz" with a single box containing "Classical and Electronic" (ie old squeaky-bonky stuff, including minimalist, but not modern "techno") and a final box of "Blues, Folk, Popular, Soundtrack, etc"
You should collect and enjoy what you like, and ignore the rest. Life is too short.
-
No really... all I have right now in G80s:
Commodore Cherry G80-0499
Schlumberger Cherry G80-1246
Goupil Cherry G80-1861HAU
Cherry G80-2500HAU (Polish)
Cherry ESA-3000HASRO
Cherry G80-3000HAU semi custom to reds, in switch lock lights and has an 'unusual' set on it
Cherry G80-3600LYCJA semi custom with Peacock casebody, US/UA dyesubs and purple doubleshot mods
I've gotten rid of everything I had that were common 1000 based, 1800, 3000, all of my ISO ones (though I kept a couple of the cooler keycap sets), along with some that weren't so much like Compaq 1838, some winkeyless POS models and the Amiga.

I disagree entirely.
For example, HaaTa's collection is without most of those cherry boards you mentioned. They are all pretty similar, and as a serious collector, he has a wide variety of very different stuff.
-
Before GeekHack, I had 4 keyboards...a couple rubber domes, a Model M and an OmniKey 102.
After GeekHack, I have 14 and rapidly climbing.
Originally, the only reason I kept the model M was to use with computers that didn't support USB in bios.
-

I disagree entirely.
QFT
I'm not even hardcore and most of my keyboards have some sort of Alps or obscure semimechanical switches... although all I use are scissor switches and three or four keyboards with linear Cherry MX.

He actually does not have that large of a collection. :P Lots of unique keycap sets though! His apartment is tiiinyyyy. :))

Reading all these somewhat makes me feel like a Vegas casino employee who develops a spending habit after mostly being around vacationers, high rollers and other people just in the mood to burn through money. At least my spending will be sustainable compared to that of my hypothetical blackjack dealer.
Disclaimer: before GH, all I really had was Twitter. Now I can't tell if my posts are chill or word barf.

Heh. We really do egg eachother on and inspire terrible spending habits. But that's half the fun! Screw wallets.
-
I only have one right now so of course I'd want more. Though the one I REALLY want is basically any custom keyboard that I get to build myself.
-
Screw wallets.
Words to live by. :p

I have 5 keyboards (if rubber domes are counted) but just use 3:
IBM Model M (work)
IBM Model F XT (waiting for keyboard to arrive)
Apple Pro Keyboard (home Windows Box)
Apple Pro Keyboard (work attached to laptop)
Logitech MK710 (still in box)
I recycled the Apple Pro's from an old iMac and a G3 in which the keyboards were heading to the recycling bin. I bought an old Dell Vostro box off of Craigslist, and it came with a Logitech MX3200 Keyboard/Mouse. I enjoyed it, but the keys stuck. After contacting Logitech, they replaced it with the MK710 (Keyboard and Mouse). The wireless and hotkeys are sweet.
Recently, nostalgia got the better of me so I purchased a couple of Model M's off of Craigslist for $20 each (sold one). I'm awaiting a model F (from my school days in the computer lab). I longed for the sweet sound/feel of the buckling springs and more so the sound/feel of the F.
The only thing lurking inside of me for another keyboard is a Unicomp 122 Emulator with USB. If I get this, I may sell my Model M.
So for now, I can see having 5-6 at most.
-
I want to get a Novatouch when they are available, and an SSK would be nice, too :D.
Also thinking about getting a Dell AT101W and installing Matias Switches .
2 x CM Quickfire Rapids (Black Switches)
1 x Phantom (Vintage Black Switches)
1 x KBT Pure (Black Switches)
1 x Choc Mini (Brown Switches)
1 x FC200R (Red Switches)
3 x Model M
1 x Chicony 5161 (White Alps)
1 x G80-11900
1 x G80-3700
2 x G81's (Olivetti and Old White on Black)
-
Right now I own 2 QFRs (brown and blue) and a G81-something with Cherry MY. I'm considering the KUL 87 with clears. I'd like to own keyboards with Topre, buckling springs, and Matias quiet click switches.

I'm too indecisive to end up with just a few.
Although my list of new keyboards to get is not getting any longer lately, which is probably a good thing.
-
Too many. I always end up going back to one daily driver which is bad
-
Screw wallets.
Words to live by. :p
I fear the day when I spend more money on keyboards than the things I actually need to live.

Man, I wish. I'm only 16 lol. Rather than saving money like every other teenager I decided to spend my money on a Ducky Shine 3. And I REALLY want one of those custom Korean keyboards. Oh god please help.

Just wait until you grow up and have to juggle family, transport costs, utility bills, rent, food (for a family), and try to fit your hobby/s in somewhere
-
I've gotten into a terrible habit of telling myself "this is the last keyboard I'll ever need". Then new stuff comes out, and I never learn..
Fortunately, I recently cut my collection down to 3 keyboards (2 of which I use daily). I haven't really messed around with any vintage boards or ALPS switches so I may have to go down that path next.
Screw wallets.
Words to live by. :p
x2 :))
-
I try and only keep keyboards that I have nice key sets for. With Penumbra coming that means I need a fourth to add to the stable :P
EDIT: Oh yeah and I want a Novatouch if they're half decent when they come out, once I've tried Topre I'll be happy. Buckling spring doesn't do it for me (had like 6 SSK's) and I'm too much of a keycap **** to go Alps without some nice caps to go on them.
-
I'm too much of a keycap **** to go Alps without some nice caps to go on them.
Whoa!
That is quite a statement of priorities.
-
Looking over my shoulder I can see the cases for 6+ Topre boards, my shelf is full of keyboards of all types. Half a dozen Filco's, a bin of Model M's, a bin of Model F's, a pile of Dolch units, Cherry keyboards ready to give up their switches, keycaps, and stabs for future projects. My phantom boards, of which I've yet to assemble. A bin of cases and "project boards". And an entire bin of keycaps. I keep telling myself I'll have time to eventually work on everything, but the reality is I don't have time anymore :(
I have my 2 favorite boards. Both Topre 45g silenced in aluminum cases that are my daily drivers for work and home. I occasionally take the FC660C out as I really enjoyed the layout, minus the lack of dedicated function keys. I keep telling myself I'll use my HHKBs, but I'm starting to believe that less and less.
It's a fun hobby when you have the time, but when you don't it turns to dust collecting pretty quick.

I've bought/sold/rebought/resold over 100 boards since 2011 and I'm close to being done - simply because I'm running out of things I haven't tried.
Here are my top three:
Topre Type Heaven ~ Liked it so much I bought two. While it doesn't feel as high quality as the Realforce [for me] it feels so right. Lack of keycap options doesn't bother me - that's how content I am with it.
IBM M2 ~ If it wasn't for fohat.digs I may have never run into this one .. for all its faults it is my favorite buckling spring board.
Cherry G80-3850 MX 3.0 ~ Doesn't get much respect since its predecessor sucked so bad. For folks who hate wrist rests it stands alone in the market place.
Honorable mention:
Matias Quiet Pro ~ This would have been in the Top 3 4 if it weren't for the aesthetics. I don't care what unobtanium durable plastic it's made out of - IT LOOKS CHEAP.
Keyboards to definitely still try/buy this year:
CM Storm NovaTouch
GON 108 ( w/ Kailh switches :D )
KBParadise V60MTS (Matias Quiet/Clicky Alps)
Over all ... want to stay under 10 boards max. (Currently at 6)
-
IBM M2 ~ If it wasn't for fohat.digs I may have never run into this one .. for all its faults it is my favorite buckling spring board.
Is it really that different from the Unicomp Ultra Classic or Spacesaver? I have never owned either of those, but I would love to see and feel them side-by-side with an M2.
-
I think the M2 feels like a normal BS board but the design is more modern to me than a Unicomp or SSK. The thin bezel on the case and the case in general are more like keyboards you would get today.
-
For me the bare minimum would be 4: one on work PC, one on each of my 2 home PCs, and 1 in the dugout.
Some people seem to think that collecting means getting every type of HHKB, for example. I don't think so. I just get the boards that I want to use and that I think look nice. If you look at my collection, they are mostly TKLs, but different kinds and colors. Switch types are spread out over the collection, and I don't even bother with switches I don't like.
-

yep CPT is true on design but it feels very different than standard model m. Feels some kind "lighter" yet very satisfying sound and feedback.

I liked the M2 a lot, but the non-standard keys and plastic stabilizers made it far less desirable.
-
I've got four at the moment, and there are at least 4-5 more that I would buy right away if I didn't care about money. But I should also note that the more keyboards I have, the more likely I get to try and attempt modding projects on them, which always results in dead keyboards. Because of that, I don't think it's possible for me to own more than 5-6 keyboards for any appreciable length of time.
-
the more likely I get to try and attempt modding projects on them, which always results in dead keyboards.
I have been pretty lucky. I haven't killed more than 10%-20% of the keyboards I have worked on.
-
The correct number of keyboards to own is established by the following formulas:
Number of keyboards currently owned = n
Number of keyboards wanted = N
Number of keyboards which will cause your spouse/significant other to divorce/leave you = p
Solve for N, where N=n+1 and N=p-1
Equating N=N:
Isolating p:
Therefore if you acquire keyboards one at a time, you will not reach p. :thumb:
== == == == ==
Anyway, I currently own four keyboards: three mechanicals (full-size - brown, TKL - vintage browns, 60% - 55g clears) and...a rubberdome.
As far as keyboards I'd want to own are concerned, I want an aluminum TKL and num pad combo. I haven't given it much thought yet but maybe a GON TKL and a GON PAD.
-
I currently own 4, but I want at least one more. This breaks my rule of 4 keyboard maximum, but I must have a novatouch. I suppose I will sell my QFR so I can stay true to myself. I was so close to jumping in on that Poker II with clears drop, but honestly I think I'm pretty much done with MX.
-
You say that now (I know I did at one point)....
-
this is back
i now own 4 keyboards, one is hhkb
so does that count as -2 boards or what someone do the math for me
-
I have 7 functional, 1 unbuilt, 1 preorder, and will probably be picking up another kit soon.
Sounds like you have 4 bro.
Edit: forgot about one that is currently in the UK. So make that 8.
-
I am currently very near settling on two. A kmac mini layout with vintage blacks for gaming/typing when I feel like typing on mx, and an hhkb for when I feel like topre or for travel.
-
I'd like to add a HHKB to my travel bag, but my one keyboard is solid. It's completely customized and is basically exactly like I'd want. It just weighs a ton so travelling with it is a pain.
-
11:
one is a disassembled apple (alps cream) i got to try out the switches. (not a fan.) will probably sell or give away the parts at some point.
one is a cheap backup ps/2 rubber dome, in case i somehow end up needing it some time.
one is a disassembled F122 that i've ignored for months because of the corrosion.
one is a green alps zenith XT board that i failed to get working.
one is a linear space invader keyboard, but some switches are showing issues (and the switches are a bee to work with).
two are keyboards i should just sell, because i prefer others over them (variable topre and model m).
..leaves the four keyboards which i rotate:
KBT Pure Pro, HHKB, RF55, Model F XT
i'm failing at this hobby
-
I think the equation at the start of the thread is it for me. The hard thing is, I think p varies by how my spouse feels, so it's a pretty changing number. And p is only relevant as long as she remembers. So when I get close to p, I switch what I'm collecting. Then when I come back to this, p resets (or close to it).
I'm actually happy with what I'm using- but I still want to try more. And own them.
I have a problem.
-
I'm at around 75 different models atm.
-
I'm at around 75 different models atm.
Thanks! I don't feel so bad now LOL
-
4 working, 4-5 projects right now.
My endgame would be 6-7 keyboards
Dolphin TKL & an LZ tkl of some sort, 1 linear 1 tactile.
Octagon 75%
HHKB w/ Novatouch stems
Restored Beige 1800 w/ Leeku pcb
LZ-CP
Some korean custom with alps
-
how my spouse feels, so it's a pretty changing number.
Being permitted the same number of keyboards as the wife has pairs of shoes would seem to be a fair balance.
But I have not had to make the argument personally.
-
Still own too many but not as many as many as the last time I posted in this thread.
-
own 2
need to own 3, i need a JP
-
Right now I own 5 and a numpad. I still want to get something topre, but I was starting to feel bad about having so many boards.
Then I saw that chyros has 75.
That's crazy!
-
About 12 atm. Need moar Alps, but the boards are so damn big.
-
I own 2 at the moment, a Model M and a Keycool 87 with Kailh Reds. The keycool really sucks, quite sandy feeling and really loud for a linear switch.
I'd like to try out Topre 55g and linear ALPS (I might just linearize an AT101).
After that, I dunno. As long as it has dye sub PBT keycaps I don't need anything else.
-
I still own way too many...and now I kind of want the BT HHKB.
-
I want one of the 62/60.
-
One for everyday of the week.
I am only at 2.
-
Planning to get 3:
1. Realforce 87U 55gr + 23UB for daily driver (done).
2. Cherry MX for gaming (still thinking).
3. HKKB for travel (soon).
-
I'm at around 75 different models atm.
Thanks! I don't feel so bad now LOL
Heh, I plan on getting many more, as many as I can! Although I'm pretty much at the physical limit of how many fit in my house right now xD . I'm getting several more interesting specimens in, though :D .
-
Own two, the ones in my signature. Really, don't think I would use more than two. Maybe a MX-compatible 60% would be cool to have so I can buy some nice key sets and display artisans.
-
1x HHKB
1x 55g 87u
1x FC660M w/ Ergo Clears
1x IBM Model M
1x Dolch PAC (w/ fully working main unit)
I find myself honestly only using my HHKB and my 87u. I might rotate the 660m in more once I get the keys I'm missing for some keysets (stupid small right shift). I've also got a GH60 coming at some point, and I've got all the parts ready for a 60% build on that.
At this point, there's only a couple keyboards I'm really interested in, mainly a Duck Viper, a White Type-S HHKB, and a Kishsaver. Other than that, I'm really satisfied with the keyboards I've got. :D

That's a nice collection and nice to hear you're not going overboard with hording. I'm interested to try out Duck Viper and Type-S myself but don't think I would ever own both. At least not at the same time.

Yeah, the price of the viper (and general unavailability) is what's preventing me from going that route. I can't really justify the price when I know there's other switches/boards that I'll probably end up going back to anyways.
The type-s on the other hand, would get rotated with my regular HHKB because why not? :D
-
I've managed to cut my keyboard wish list down to 2.
On top of those I already have, that is.
-
How many keyboards do you (want to) own?
Is "all of them" an option?
I have more than I can use at one time but that's not stopping me.
-
Anyway, I currently own four keyboards: three mechanicals (full-size - brown, TKL - vintage browns, 60% - 55g clears) and...a rubberdome.

Since then, I've sold the full-size; picked up a Model M at a price so sweet it was sinful (thanks again CPTBadAss); received a G80-11900 as a Secret Santa gift from dorkvader; picked up an HHKB, SSK, and a KMAC2; and learned to live without a num pad.
In terms of wanting...a white/grey Realforce 87U 55g, an 1800 (preferably a Dolch), and a custom disco board (B.87 PCB, acrylic diffuser case, 62g or 65g Zealios, and slow cycling RGB LEDs for the switches) or I end up getting an MK Disco or a Ducky One TKL RGB.
-
I've managed to cut my keyboard wish list down to 2.

Or actually next to them might be better.
If they were all on top the bottom ones would get squashed.
-
1x gon nerd 60 acrylic case with gateron black
1x fc660m with zealios
1x satan gh60 with gateron blue
1x filco ninja with ergo clears
1x rs68 on the way
-
Only have two: TGR-Jane CE and a Leopold FC200 (backup)
I would however like a few boards (because why the hell not) to add to my collection:
IBM Model M (either SSK or tenkey)
Topre (either HHKB or RF 87u)
KMAC since it was the first Kustum I heard about when getting into mech keyboards
I'm sure there will be more since it seems new designs and layouts and popping up frequently these days.
-
ATM I have 4, well maybe 5. A few I bought to replace onces which were temporarily damaged. Others I bought to try new switches or brands. Some days I feel as if a switch is too stiff so I'll switch to a lighter board. Some days I bottom out terribly and decide on the stiffer switch.
I still want to try Greetech and Kaihl and Matias switches, but it seems silly to buy more boards. Most people probably find one they like the most and use that one 80% of the time. I like having choices but it seems silly having all these boards just sitting around.
-
Current collection:
Ducky Mini browns
Leopold reds 80% (Home)
Lolita spyker reds 80% (work)
Noppoo 75% Browns
And the most prized possession: Razor Blackwidow blues :p
-
I currently own 3.
1. K70 brown
2. Quickfire TK blue
3. V60 mini matias click
I'm about to get an old at101w, reviving an IBM P70 keyboard maybe make it into custom one.
Of all the keyboards, I would one to have 1 best clicky, 1 best tactile & 1 best linear that I like.
Best clicky would be the one from IBM P70.
Best tactile, haven't decided yet, as well as best linear.
-
i own 3 mechanical and 1 rubber dome listed below.
i'm selling all but the G710+ soon, and moving stateside where i'll get a FC660M mx brown for daily and another keyboard. i have the granites and i love them, but atm i dont have a keyboard to fit them onto and with the 660M as my new daily i'd be using granites, and the other keyboard solely for DCS keys such as the ducky cities or gold plated blingy caps. :)
-
Oh God... I own 26 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39179.0) with parts to build 5 more and 2 others on my wishlist. There is no such thing as endgame.

damn probably the most insane collection I've seen.
-
I own about 6. According to my keyboard specs doc, I want to own 28.
-
I've made a more realistic list for myself of keyboards I want.
1. Realforce 87u Beige 55g
2. A TKL with some type of complicated ALPS.
3. A 75% board with linear ALPS (either green ALPS or linear white/black)
-

Wow what a collection!
How long has that taken to get together?
I myself currently own 2, a pok3r which I have fallen out of love with (I will say however that I enjoy typing on mx clears) - which I also bought the Granite key caps for (had to purchase extra's because european.) so I've got that arriving soon, but I'm going to put on the caps and use the board in my office.
And the Varmilo which is currently the daily driver.
I don't have it narrowed down quite yet, but so far there are quite a few boards I'd like to own.
Leopold FC660C < it's going to cost me so much money to import this, but will probably save up for it at one point.
A 68% alps board (might have to make that myself?)
IBM Model M < european would be acceptable, but would probably prefer ANSI
HHKB
So far.
And I'm quite new to this still, so I'm sure more will be added soon. :p
-
I believe I have enough.
* I said that before....
Oh yeah, I have one more coming!
-
.
-
I'd like to narrow it down to 3:
1.) BlueNalgene's upcoming TKL w/ SMK Whites.
2.) PLUM 84 35g (not sure if I'll like this - still have to try it; but I enjoy Realforce 30g - just not the cost/work to make one in TKL format.)
3.) A low profile Korean 75% w/ Zeal's upcoming Silent Gateron mods/modules.
-
I own 4 currently, with 1 more coming in the mail next week.
- DS 4 w/ MX blues
- Dell AT101W w/ black ALPS
- WASD V2 w/ MX greens
- Duck Eagle w/ MX clears
- KUL ES-87 w/ MX greens (in the mail)
Ideally, I would like to own probably around 7-8. Probably an Orion V2 with some tactile ALPS, a smaller BS board (probably a Kishsaver), a RF87u 55g and/or RF104u 55g, and then some custom MX boards with varying switch types.
-
Hmm, I'm kinda experimenting atm.
I currently only own a Cooler Master Quickfire TK, with Zealios for the main (60%) cluster and a mix of Vortex ISO-DE PBT caps and maxkeyboard green ISO blanks for the bottom row compatability.
First I want to complete this TK with a full set of Zealios (already ordered in R3). But I will gut it out if CM releases a RGB version of the TK similar to the Masterkeys series and get one of those to swap the Zealios into.
Then, I signed up for the TK78 which will also recieve a set of Zealios.
Also, I want a 62/60, I already have the Zealios switches and a set of caps ready for that one. Maybe I'll also get a few different sets of switches to have some variety. I currently have a bag of Gateron Browns and very new (and very inconsistent) Cherry browns, but why use those when you can have Zealios?
I'll probably get a Topre board (Realforce or HHKB) when I'm in LA this summer, that is if I like what I see at elitekeyboards (so basically yes).
So in short:
1. CM QF TK with Zealios (maybe some RGB version, if it launches)
2. TK78 with Zealios
3. 62/60 with Zealios (switches flexible due to hotswap)
(4. Some kind of Topre)
Of course this list is subject to change, depending on what will be released or made more obtainable in the future (TK78 RGB pliz?).

Huh. Turns out my first answer was just vague and general enough that it still applies perfectly today. :))
I own "a few" currently. I'd like to own "a few" more in the future. Between MX, BS, and topre there are enough variants and alternate layouts that I don't really have any two that I consider redundant. They each are nice for their own purposes, and I rotate between them depending on my mood.
-
I think one keyboard for each modern stem type would be a good number for me
-
I own about 11 or so right now.
The goal is the new keyboard need to either have different switch type or a different form factor. So I'm not buying repeats of what I already have.
And with each new purchase I can try something new (either new switch type or new form factor).
-
I only have one working board right now. It's a Cherry G80-8113 POS board with browns.
I've got a satan gh60 project I'm getting parts together for that will have 62g vintage blacks, so I'm pretty excited about that.
-
Own none.
Want a Octagon, Orion and Eagle but eh. Not sure about topre, will be trying it in a couple of weeks.
-
Own:
1. Ducky Mini with Cherry MX Blues. It was my first mech and I take it to class from time to time (I've a couple buddies that bring their boards too), I use it for gaming too.
2. IBM Model M. Always wanted to have the real deal, and I love it.
--- coming ---
3. Whitefox Aria with MX red.
4. Planck MIT with Gateron Yellow.
Want:
- A Topre board, maybe a Novatouch since it is easier to get here, but I went to Korea I'd buy a Leopold FC660C or a HHKB.
- A Duck keyboard (the Octagon or the Viper) because they way too cool.
- An IBM Model F 62
-
I have a fullsize WASD CODE with MX Clears and a KBP V60 with Matias Quiet Clicks. I'm thinking of reselling my CODE to buy another 60% keyboard, which I really love. I'm hesitating between a Pok3r with Clears or another V60 with Matias Click. I would like to try Topre switches, but the Leopold dedicated arrow cluster kinda kills the point of a 60% to me, and I'm not convinced by the HHKB diamond layout.
-
I want this to be my endgame :
kmac happy
hhkb
kishsaver
-
I want a custom ALPS Blue tenkeyless, a custom zealios keyboard, a model F AT, a ANSI space invaders keyboard, an Ortek MCK84, a monterey blue apple desktop bus keyboard, and a custom 60% with green ALPS. So seven. I could probably cut my collection down to just those and be happy forever.
-
The correct number of keyboards to own is established by the following formulas:
Number of keyboards currently owned = n
Number of keyboards wanted = N
Number of keyboards which will cause your spouse/significant other to divorce/leave you = p
Solve for N, where N=n+1 and N=p-1
It should be: p = n + N - 1
The hard part is knowing p before getting to p!
I think it should be N=n and n=P-1. The number of keyboards wanted should be the number of keyboards owned. It should also equal 1 below the threshold of renewing your match.com membership. So if you own 9 keyboards and 10=divorce, N=n which is 9=9, and n=P-1, or 9=10-1. It's basic algebra which is easy, but I cannot remember if two different variables can have the same value? If not it will have to be tweaked.
If N=p-n-1, then N= 10-9-1, this implies that you want 0 keyboards. I haven't taken algebra 101 in about 8 years.

I think it's "crazy" to own 50 keyboards. This is a stack floor to ceiling. I collect watches and I have just about 50 watches and to some this is also crazy.
For those who own this many, do you keep them in a closet or in original boxes? Do you own dust covers? Even for the one or two that sit on my desktop, if I don't keep a cover over them in 2 or 3 days they are full of dust.

I have 75 different model, maybe 100 in total. I have original boxes for only a few of them; the rest I keep in Dell boxes I got from a recycling centre, or stacked sideways in big normal boxes.

This actually wouldn't be bad to learn from someone who is versed in keeping a lot of keyboards. I have a feeling I might be racking up quite a few.
The wife is planning on making some mounts on a wall so I can display the ones I'm not currently using and I don't know if the wall will be big enough :))

Minimum of 3: 60% Cherry MX for Gaming, HHKB, HHKB Type-S or BT
Maximum of 5: Custom 60% with Zealios, ErgoDox
-
HHKB, B.87, B.Face, 75% (probably octagon), and a WhiteFox? I think that's all I want... So 5? I do want an SSK... So 6

Actually make that 3.

I've got two, a full size Quickfire XT with Cherry MX Reds, and a KBP V60 with new Cherry MX Blacks which I've had next to no issues with even though I've heard there are smoother options out there. I'm saving up for a custom build with Gateron Greens that I'm really looking forward to, which is tough to do since I've already bought a bag of switches for it. I haven't tried any clicky switches before, and I didn't want to get something with blues since I'm really not a fan of light switches.
That said I'm not sure how many I'd like to own. One or two seems like enough, but then again I'd really like to try out a whole plethora of switches. I still haven't typed on anything buckling spring, I'm gonna have to build something with Zealios eventually if these Gateron Greens are anything to go by, and I want to see if they hype surrounding Topre is really justified. And if the hype for Topre lives up to what I've heard I'd like to see if the various knockoffs of Topre are worth the Cherry MX keystem compatibility.

In my possession I have a unicomp model M and a HHKB(nice and quiet for the office), I just bought tonight an fk-2001( with ether alps white or alps white clones not sure which dont care which I'm just happy to get alps switches of some kind) and a model f xt(getting the sorars converter next check). So I guess I own 4 but am waiting on two. I want to get a beamspring, blue alps, a model M13(even though I have the unicomp equivalent), unicomp m 122, model F 122, unicomp space saver(if they ever make one), matias tactile pro mac, an mx blue black and clear/white, and logitech's new thing. Once i get them I'll be all done, yes I basically want one of everything and multiple buckling spring(probably my end game switch).
Not sure if it counts but I also want a selectric II. ... yeah I have a lot of money spending ahead of me, at least one board a year is my goal. Good thing software development pays well.

10 keyboard and counting... I just use about 1/3 of them though >:D

I have two TypeMatrix 2030s, a bog standard $5 101-key rubberdome for my wife, an ErgoDox EZ. I also have a keyboardio Model 01 pre-ordered.
Apart from these, I want to own a contoured keyboard at some point, and likely a split AND contoured too, so a Kinesis Advantage and a Dactyl may be in my future. At this time, I am not interested in any other keyboards. Non-ergonomic is useless to me, and on the ergonomic front, I am okay with what I have, will have, and the two future options.
Since I do not wish to sell any of these, even if they become obsolete, in the end, I plan to own exactly seven keyboards.

My signature is kind of a confession.

I've got a Rosewill RK9000v2 and a Pok3r. My wife and friends already think I'm weird. Wait till I've got 10 or so floating around and 20 keycap sets. It will probably take years, though, because I waste a lot of money on rig parts, motorcycle parts, and guns.
