Need help on finding lubes
« on: Sun, 06 September 2020, 10:30:43 »
I have a Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro L with Cherry MX browns, that I would like to lube. My issues is that I live in India and most of the lubes that I see recommended are very expensive. It would be much cheaper for me to find lubes from Indian brands. So I want to know what I should be looking for in a lube. Preferable, I would like to lube without having to desolder the switches. So the lube would have to something that I can use without disassembly.

I would also like to know if I can use rubik's cube lube or treadmill lube instead of very specific lubes.

Here are some of the lubes that I was looking at:

Would it work on just the key switches or do I have to get another for the stabs?

Here's the data sheet for the teflon grease that I linked:

Here's the data sheet for the silicone grease that I linked:

The first one (PTFE/Teflon) is pretty close to Krytox 205, so for normal springs it will be good for any plastic to plastic places.
If you're running really light springs it could feel sluggish.

The Silicone lube (second), doesn't list a viscosity, without that it's difficult to say. If it's a thick grease, great, it will work on metal to plastic places.

The last one might be good for plastic to plastic but again, no viscosity rating, but being a oil should be fine for plastic to plastic places, but it would best be used on lighter springs.

There's been a whole thread about lubing switches without disassembly:

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=108287

This applies to both using some kind of aerosol can, and to trying to brush lube in from the top.

Noted about the lubing switches. I guess I'll have to live with what I have until I get better soldering equipment. This should be fine to do on stabs, right?

Do I need to get silicone grease or PTFE grease for this?

Either should be fine on stabs, you just want something that's non-conductive and thick enough to stay in place regardless of ambient temperature.

Since the PTFE grease has a lot more information in the data sheet, would that specific product be ideal? Thanks.

I totally missed that part... Grrrr...
Good catch.

Silicone or PTFE doesn't really matter.
You often can do some if not all stab work without pulling switches. It depends on how they are mounted and the case design.

Everything I said above applies:
Thick grease on plastic to metal contacts: springs, stabs (pivot  point and in the holes the wires go in, lots in the holes the wires go in.
Thin grease or oil plastic for plastic: stems, stab guides. Some people use this on springs as well.
Oil for plastic on plastic when using light springs. Some people use this on springs as well.
Some people soak the entire spring, some lube only the bottom, some lube top and bottom.

Well, it will be fine as long as it's thick enough. Both are gooey non-conductive, and non-reactive. Wouldn't really say that one is better than the other for this specific application, get the one that makes you feel more comfortable. Being able to apply it precisely is probably more important.

Maybe the sticky needs to be in a flashing font, I haven't really paid attention but I think this question seems a recurring one :)

Since Leslieann said that the PTFE grease that I linked is pretty close to Krytox 205, I'm probably gonna get that and apply enough so that it is thick enough on the stabs. One recommendation is better than no recommendation. Thanks a bunch. I will try it out whenever the lube arrives and let you know how it goes.

Is there anything else I can do along with lubing the stabs to reduce rattle and overall noise of the keyboard?(It is a Cooler master masterkeys Pro L, full size, cherry mx browns, plate mounted, with through hole LEDs)

Bandaid mod and clip. Not that I have ever bothered with this, personally I find grease is easy and works well enough on my keyboards.

Those still require me to desolder the switches to get the stabs out. So, I'm gonna pass on that.

Thank you for your help.
