Recently got one of these throat mics for dual use in gaming (cool factor) and in the car (engine roar), available with attachments for both PCs and cell phones.  Very cool concept, and works well, I do get occasional complaints about sounding muffled but otherwise decipherable.  Definitely better in the car, where a regular mic gets a ton of background noise.



For those not familiar with how they work, the microphones pic up vibrations directly from your voice box around your neck.  Initially designed for military use, they now sell them commercially.

You'll actually sound pretty much natural though depending on the quality of the mic; they are used in high-noise(aircraft, tanks, combat) or you can whisper in low-noise required environments.

No, your voice comes through like normal, it's just the sharp consonants you make with your teeth and tongue are less pronounced.

Well, not exactly whisper, because you have to create some vibration in your vocal cords, but you can talk very very softly while pressing the mics inwards for a low volume situation.

But typically at 8k RPMs with windows down I'm not so worried about how loud I'm talking, just that they can hear me!

On a geek note, the cables on these are really sweet, very high quality, flexible, fabric wrapped, non-binding sort of sheath.  It's almost like I'm on Seal Team 6 bringing it to Bin Later.

The earpiece is also a tube, so you don't have to cram an actual mini-speaker in your ear like typical in-ear headsets.  It's way more comfortable, but obviously not for music and such.
