Headphones / Headset Advice
« on: Sat, 01 September 2012, 03:27:07 »
Hello Hello Geekhack its me again! and im looking to get my wallet hacked again because well i need a new headset. Im currently using a Turtle beach PX21. I strongly dislike it its not very comfortable for using long periods of time and the sound quality isn't that good only plus it has is that the microphone quality isn't just terrible. I payed alot of money for it probably over a year ago ((like 90 dollars)) and this was before i started getting into good computer gear ((mech keyboards mouses etc)). This time i don't want to make a mistake like that again but i want to invest into a new headset and i cant decide.

What do you guys think or what do you use that you like im looking for anything preferably under 110. Ive been looking at the SteelSeries Siberia V2 but im not so sure. I don't seem to like big brand name stuff they seem to have alot of faults ((like alot of razer products have)). So i decided to do more digging and i found a plantronics gamescon 780 which does not look to bad either.  But im still not sure it will suit my needs and the issue with the headset is it isnt usb powered so i have my doubts about its sound. im willing to look at more if you guys have any ideas.

What im currently looking for or like in the requirements ((give or take a few)) Is:
Under 110 dollars
NOT WIRELESS
Comfortable
Nice sound quality
Preferably available on amazon
Durable
Loud
((microphone not really necessary but would be nice))

I also would like to mention that i kind of like the big squared headsets but that's not the most important i just think they look nice and would be more comfortable. So what are your guys opinions what do you think would suit me right? It will be mostly used for gaming and some music and skype on the side but overall it wont be used for just watching a youtube video or listening to music alot throughout the day. Any other features negative or positive please add on if you would to help me decide and what you might think about them.

THANKS!

I bought my Logitech G35s on sale a while back from Newegg, and I really like them. I'm no audiophile, but they check all the boxes (for me) on the requirements you listed, with a bonus of matching the "looks" you like.

I'd grab a fostex T50 (Or Audio Technica ATH-AD700) and send the rest of the budget on a decent mic. Both are low impedance; My mac pro is on the lowest volume setting. The fostex can handle 3W peak, because it's a planar-magnetic boss, so that should be plenty loud enough. Some say the AD700's are a bit bass light. My AD900's are perfect for me (not a basshead) and have the most amazing soundstage ever. This makes positioning in games particularly effective. The T50's are planar magnetic, and do bass a bit better.

There are already some guides for putting a mic on AD700's. Some methods are easier than others. Many agree that it's an excellent headphone for gaming. Myself, I prefer not having a mic attached to my head. I like ones on my desk or in my webcam.

The AD700's use the wing design, and it's the most comfortable headphone ever. I have worn mine for 17+ hours at a stretch without taking them off, and it's been great. It's like they're not even here. The Fostex's are designed for hard studio use, and are amazingly durable. I sling mine around in my backpack for 18+ months, and they show no signs of wear. They aren't as comfortable, but I can still put in many hours no problem. (not like uncomfortable Grados, ugh.)

I'm pretty sure both are available on Amazon. Both are wired, and the fostex has a cable that unplugs from both ends. (with a normal miniplug, so if you get one of those slim ones for phones, you can replace it with a mini-mini cable. You will need to do this with the T50 or get an adaptor, though, as it comes with a 1/4 default. Audio technica has a combo plug.

Hmm the foster and auditech dont look to bad. For some reason i feel like the headsets that are called "gaming" and have the built in mics and what not even for there price arent that high of the quality. The microphone isnt that important for me i only use it to skype casually with buddies so this decent quality one i have off my turtle beach is all i need. So maybe ill get one of those two unless anybody has any other advice / headsets to recommend for me to check out. I mean the headset will be used mostly for gaming casual music that kind of stuff so i just want a nice high quality one microphone quality is not that important. I just want what i am doing to sound amazing.

I just got a set of Beyerdynamic 770 pro 80s and they are exceptionally comfortable.  The 770s are closed back so minimal sound "leakage."  They have open back models as well which probably have slightly more accurate sound but less isolation.

I've been thinking about these.  Reviews make it out to be the best bang for the buck.  I've been using Sony MDR-V500s, that sound decent but no mic.  For $60 shipped, it could be worse.

I'm not gonna recommend a hs but I'm gonna warn you about:

- Dont buy from a gaming tinted company (Roccat, Razer, steel series) its all gimmick, low quality.
- Don't buy a surround sound headset. True surround sound is only good in full setups. If you want to have surround sound you're better off with a high-quality stereo headset and a soundcard producing virtual 7.1

Switches tried so far
Cherry MX Red Blue Black Clear
ALPS White Black (fake)Blue
Montereys
ACER
White Black
Futaba
Buckling Sprin

Well after browsing around ((at first i was considering the steel series Siberia)) but now im really digging the  Audio Technica ATH-AD700. Like i said a microphone etc on them is not important the microphones use is usually just for skyping with friends or playing sc2 with them. So i am really all about sound quality and durability loud, clear, solid. Which is why i think i might go with the audi tech. There a little bit more then what i wanted to spend ((like 130 on amazon.)) but from what ive read they seem very solid!

btw thanks OP i know about being very wary of "gaming brand" gear.

I got a Superlux HD688B on Amazon a long time ago that cost around $50.  I made a few mods to it.  There is a website that shows other peoples mods.  I did a sock mod, took out a little piece of paper inside the cups, and replaced the foam that sits on the headphone drivers.

I can only recommend Sennheiser's PC360. Solid, good-looking, amazingly comfortable and good sound quality in both input and output. Only downside I can think of is the bass, which may not be strong enough for all music genres.

I would save some money and get the Sennheiser PC360. Sometimes when you're looking at new gadgets you want to jump in and buy them quickly but you can't go wrong saving money and going higher quality.

Especially when you consider what you spend versus the hours you will use them.

Alright so there's another thread very similar to this and I just posted this over there but it applies just as well over here. I read through all of your requirements and I think this would fit them very well.

I recommend the Sony MDR-V6 Monitors. Punchy bass, crystalline highs, caramel mids. Top headphone under $150 hands down and it gives the $200 models some serious competition. Another important factor is that these headphones can take a beating. Actually, they could probably be used to fend off a mugger if you needed to. Replacement parts are also everywhere from velour ear pads to replacement headbands. They also fold for easy storage.

How much do they cost though? $68 on amazon with prime availability (free prime accounts for .edu addresses if you didn't know). Read some reviews and make an informed decision.

I would recommend the Audio Technica M50's. They were my cherry poppers into the audiophile world and opened my eyes to sound and music in an entirely new way. Just check out some reviews of them, they are generally some of the highest regarded entry level headphones out there. I have seen them for as low as $80 new, you just need to search vigilantly.

I'm thinking of getting the M50's since I have the AD700's

Anyways, I recommend the AD700's because they are boss

M50 not so good for gaming, really good for EDM though.

I would recommend AD700 paired with Modmic or Zalman mic for gaming.
