Considering what they usually go for on GH, that isn't too bad.

You pay a significant premium when you buy from an established company, but you get peace of mind in return, knowing that you will get a clean, tested, well-packaged product with a warranty. For many people, that is worth a 20%-100% upcharge.

That is well worth not having to clean a nasty old model m. The last one I bought took like a whole day to clean it was disgusting.

That's a fairly big markup relative to their other prices, but what fohat says is true.  I've had a lot of Model M's come through me via eBay and what I spent there to get a few beat boards I could have spent on a nice unit from these guys.  In the end I did exactly that.  Only one of the three SSKs I've bought was in perfect working order when I got it.

Yeah I believe so.  But that's eBay, so who knows what you would have gotten from there...

Screw buying an SSK, I want to make my own out of a full-sized Model M...

I'll third what fohat said. I've got two Model M's (one white label, one silver label). The first was from eBay and it was in good condition -- clean, a few keys needed tweaking, but otherwise what was offered by the seller. The second (silver label) was from clickykeyboards and it was immaculately clean, with no keys requiring any refitting.

I actually don't mind cleaning up a Model M, however.

If I were to buy a SSK (eventually I will) I'd go to clickykeyboards, or a GH member.

so, if you really have to have a 100% authentic old stock ssk now, these are all great options. if you can hold out a bit, i'm really quite serious about the ssk revival (serious enough that i have several thousand us dollars in ssk parts at the moment).

Yep, that was my thought process too, until I bought something from clickykeyboards that turned out to be broken and untested. They gave me the run around and basically told me to f-off. So don't count on them in that respect.

surprised to hear that.

I have never bought anything but incidental parts from them, but I thought that they enjoyed a good reputation.

They aren't cheap, so they should supply good stuff, but, given their price structure (double the going ebay rate), I would figure that they would be selling a decent SSK @ $300-400.

In that scenario, a $250 SSK would fall into the "bargain basement" or "scratch and dent" category.

If the case is still nice, you can probably replace/upgrade almost everything else.

I don't no why people are crying about prices ..
You can get a BRAND-NEW buckling-spring keyboard, it even has the bloody WIN-Keys !!, for 69somethingnexttonothing if you live in the US .
Germans and Brits can get one, brand-new, for just over 100 Euro, including shipping ...

How free does the price have to be before people stop *****ing about it ??

I agree that Unicomps are a great value.

Although I, personally, like to buy old stuff and rehab it, if someone were interested in trying buckling springs I would absolutely recommend buying a new Unicomp.

You can get a smaller footprint, black (or other) color, native USB plug - all at half the price of a Filco - what's not to like?

If you decide to become a collector, that comes later.
