Quickfire rapid. Solid board to start with, replaceable top case, can take out the controller to make it programmable, and just generally easy to work with.

Another Kul-ES87 user here that would happily suggest this board for what you are looking for.  The Leopold fc750r is another good option but I was able to get the Kul and a set of pbt dyesub keycaps for slightly less than the total cost of the Leopold.

These are all good suggestions; you won't go wrong with either of them. The deciding factor will come down to price and availability when it comes time to pull the trigger. Don't agonize about finding "The One." Narrow your list down to two, or three and then go with the best deal that you can find.

Do the Filco and Leopolds have DIP switch options to flip the Caps Lock and Ctrl keys?

Besides being a very solid and minimalist board, the KUL does and it's a great feature to have.

hhkb, it's technically a TKL.

it's minimal, no tacky backlight, has great switches and you won't need another keyboard after it. im saving you money and headaches!

If you really care to swap caps/ctrl then KUL ES-87 is likely your best bet. Really solid board for the price. If you want to get a similar solid feel for less and don't really care to remap keys, then Quickfire Rapid is excellent.

RealForce 87U 55g uniform.

Or if you want to stick with Cherry then QFR, Filco, KUL or WASD.

Or Alps get a Matias something or a KB Paradise V80 (currently on Massdrop).

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Putting in another vote for the CM Quickfire Rapid.  You can get them for about $60 these days, and they're 90% of what a Filco is at a fraction of the price.

I would give this WASD TKL board a look:

http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/mechanical-keyboard/wasd-87-key-doubleshot-pbt-black-slate-mechanical-keyboard.html

I have this keyboard with MX Greens, but in a full size form factor, and really like it - it feels very solid and the keycaps have a very pleasant texture.
