SA Kaar (AKA SA Grandmaster) (take 2)
« on: Thu, 13 September 2018, 14:26:16 »
So I posted this in the wrong forum. This is technically the second time I've ever posted on geekhack (long time lurker).

Where is the Thor Ragnorok themed keyboard? More importantly what would the Grand Master's personal keyboard look like? Here!

Story goes that I was chatting with some peers on the Zapcables discord and the idea of runes came up. I'm so in love with hiragana alpha sets and I thought I can't read those so what about just cool looking shapes. From there the discussion shifted to space wizards descending from the heavens and imparting their rune gifts on primitive humans. What greater space wizard than the grand master of Sakaar?

I was inspired mainly by the trash planet itself (Sakaar) which was in turn inspired by original Jack Kirby Thor art. The director Taika Waititi was said to have pointed at a Jack Kirby panel and exclaiming that that is exactly what Sakaar looks like. From that they designed the entire world!

So this is my first time ever designing anything like this. What I'm looking for mainly is critique! I have no clue as to making the next step or even if something like this possible to produce. My grand vision would be for a set that is double shot (gold plastic legends?????). There would be several novelty sets based loosely on the heroes of Thor Ragnorok and even the villain! Perhaps to give it a really futuristic look the alphas could be translucent blue or glyphs translucent yellow?

Anyway let me know what you think even if you think it totally sucks.

A little bit too bright for my taste to be honest

That's fair, I was trying to go in a new direction away from the typical muted colors.

Looks expensive if double-shot.

ONLY THE BEST FOR GRAND MASTER!!!!

For sure, I love the drifter set. I wanted to buy it but I never played the game. I really need to play that game!

This is very interesting, I feel like to have to see some renders to understand what it would even look like in context.
Yeah like others said DSA drifter did very well despite a really weird design, so why no this.

The only issue is that yellow on light blue is kind of an eye****. Can we try adjusting that font color?

I would recommend you build upon 3 colors primarily, such as the magenta/red of the bottom row, yellow (maybe go for a V2), and blue from the inspiration photo to make a more concise board. Love the unique glyphs. Milkshake had "weirdo" alphas which outsold the normal ones, so as long as it's done correctly it can be successful.

It's hard to get a full image of the keyset you have in mind with just the images you posted, so I would get with someone who does rendering and also expand upon the board, such as numpad/ novelties (which may not be neccessary), etc.

Overall, I love the inspiration you have and definitely think with a little work, you can make it! Good luck. :)

looks absolutely gorgeous and i would like to see you continue with it.  i like the colors as they are and both versions of the alphas.  so no real feedback/suggestions, but i bought drifter a few weeks ago and this looks right up my alley.   :thumb:

Alphas virtually unreadable due to lack of contrast.

Totally! I didn't color grade it and now that I look at it on a different monitor than the one I was working on it's making my eyes ache! I will update colors!!

You're right, I'll update the colors!

Awesome, I didn't realize that there was a color code system for the plastics. I'll definitely adjust with these colors in mind. Are there actual corresponding hex values?

Thanks a lot, the encouragement provides the much needed drive I need to keep going!
