Need to buy my first camera, help pls
« on: Sat, 20 October 2012, 14:12:06 »
Howdy guys.
After taking some photos with my iphone I realized that it sucks and a need a better one to contribute with photos here on the forum.

I want a camera that can take closeup photos and non-blurry normal photos.
The camera will only be used to take photos of geeky stuff, such as keyboards, caps and computer related stuff, since I am no photographer, nor hipster.

So what do you guys think I should get?

Ps. Cheapest available please :D

I'd just go into the nearest photo store and buy one of the compacts they have.
Though you might want to get something with a proper lens if you want to get good closeups of caps and whatnot.

Thing is; if you're going for the cheapest option the advice you'll get in a photo store will be more than enough, just say you want a cheap camera that can do close-up shots well.

I have had a couple of early model Panasonic Lumix cameras that I absolutely love.

Don't know what they have been up to in recent years, but I need a native wide-angle lens and good battery life for my work, and the little FX-01s have served me admirably.

the canon 650D twin lets pack is coming down in price a bit now and is a great starter kit. has enough auto features for any nub and a ton of great manual features for when you get more confident!

The only drawback on most DSLRs is that the kit lenses have a very long focusing distance - usually around 90cm. This means that the camera cannot focus on any object within 90cm of the lens. This makes close-up shots very difficult unless you use the telephoto lens and a tripod and/or sufficient lighting, at which point you'll have really nice photos.

But to phetto - as above, your local camera store should be able to give you some good advice. Just ask them which compacts have good macro capabilities, and you should be sweet.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

yep i know what you mean, i just got a cheap light tent off ebay and a decent tripod and i get some nice close ups. saving up for a canon mpe-65 should make things alot easier lol mind you not everyone is willing to pay more then a whole camera on just a lens.

i'm talking only about point and shoots

i just used a friends sony rx100 during our trip to italy, it's pretty nice, actually it gets the highest review ratings of any p&s out there, probably cuz the sensor (not to be confused with megapixels) is almost the size of the micro 4/3 cameras. it retails for 650 tho.

it far beat out my old panasonic lumix dmcsz3 from 09 but that was a 200ish camera and what i didn't like about the sony rx100 and i guess all big large sensor p&s is that they are limited to 3x zoom.

my wife wanted a new camera but she requires 12x zoom or more, that's just what she likes and she want's it small, she will not use the micro 4/3 so it really is finding the best p&s with zoom.

the best ones were the canon s110/sony hx20/ and another lumix zs20.

of those 3 all show high 90's so i just went with another lumix since i was used to it had 20x zoom and well it also happened to be the cheapest (if you chose black lol), actually i just got home, it should be in my mailbox now. gonna open it.

Believe it or not, check out Toy's R Us. A friend told me that and i thought he was googy. Ends up that Amazon, New Egg, Best Buy, everyone wanted $179 and at Toy's R Us it was $159. Their prices are great, but the selection was a little low. Maybe see if they have them online. Selection would probably be better.

Good Luck,
John

That's dedication - buying a new camera to contribute photos to Geekhack :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Based on what's on amazon right now, I'd grab a olympus e-pl1 or panasonic gf3 based on performance/price alone. They do have their limitations in low light, but for general snapshots in decent light, those are pretty decent cameras.

I'd recommend a pro-sumer camera such as Canon SX500 IS, SX40 IS, SX50 IS or Nikon P500. Try them for a year or two, if you ever find yourself needing more from the camera then upgrade to a DSLR.

DSLR are not very friendly for people who want to start out in photography because every len have a small limitation of use.

A plain point and shoot (from hereon referred to as 'PS') would do good. Something around the $150-200 range would be suitable for just taking nice images.

If you have money to spend, a 'pro-sumer' camera like what squarebox recommended would do even better and probably have a reasonable amount of control, they however can top out at around $300-400 for a mid tier one.

Past that are entry level DSLRs and high tier consumer cameras in the $500+ range.

A DSLR is a good investment if you know you have the use for it and can stomach the money for the camera and lenses. I've had a Canon 450D for over 3 years and it's still a champ for what I use it for. Obviously the best of the choices if money doesn't matter, but it requires a high learning curve to get quality images.

For what you want, a simple PS camera will cut it. I'd suggest getting a small tripod for it as well. Getting a PS with manual controls would also allow for greater freedom when composing shots and the like.

However, before you decide spending a lot of money, do these things to try and see if you can get a decent photo:

-Add more light. This will allow for the sensor to use a lower ISO speed, reducing the grain in the image.

-Second to adding more light, would be to practice holding it steady. Those who've done rifle shooting would know this trick: take 3 slow deep breaths, the first 2 full, the last one let it half way out and hold it. Keep the camera as steady as possible in your hands, and move your finger slowly when you capture the image. This will remove much of the motion blur you get in images.

-If it won't focus, move away until it will. You can crop the image later, there is virtually no use in having 8 megapickles in a phone camera, but you might as well use that to your advantage.

This is a rushed comparison shot I took about a year ago with my 450D (top) and my Galaxy Note (bottom). While not perfect, lots of light and holding it dead can still produce a damn good image.

Always remember, a better camera won't always turn out better images unless you know how to take a steady image in the first place.

It's like giving a Lambo to a kid who just got their license. They won't magically drive better with one.
