So marijuana will be legalized in WA and CO as of Dec. 6th

I haven't smoked in a few years, but the pothead inside me is super excited about this. It will apparently be available for purchase to people 21 and older in stores just like alcohol. Discuss.

How long will it realistically take for police organizations and regulating policies to truly have this effectively rolled out?

Is Dec 6th that date?

I'd rather have the money spent on the "war" on drugs be used more efficiently on things that can actually affect the people and society as a whole. Send all that money to NASA and science R&D and I bet the world of tomorrow will be here by 2050

I have always said weed will never be legal, but there would be an acceptable level kind of like speeding. 1 mile over is illegal but you don't usually get stopped until 11 over.

Feels great to be wrong.

The early reports say this could generate over 2 billion in tax revenue over the next two years. That's a start, right China? I just hope a good example is set for the rest of the country, and things don't somehow go horribly awry. I am guessing this will work out like Amsterdam, where contrary to what people think pot is tolerated yet still illegal on a federal level.

Look at Cali - the only probs i recall them having was neighbors of grow houses *****ing about traffic. And the weed in the rest of the country has gotten way better. I see good thing coming of this, as long as people arent too dumb about it.

Honestly, I've never smoked pot, and I've never much cared to. I have a very addicting personality, So I try to avoid bad habits. I know that if I tried it and I liked it, I'd be doing it every day.

I used to be really pompous about it. I would probably be put off if my wife or kids (when they are 16~) did it and I found out, but as I get older, I think I care less and less. I used to be really uppity that people at my school did it (lol) Then I got used to that, and it was like "oh, my buddy X does it all the time, what a loser", Nowadays, I really don't care too much, but I doubt I'd ever do it, even if they legalized in Wyoming (yeah, right)

I had thought there were still restrictions placed upon it, like what we see in colorado where it's only legal if you have one of those jokes of a medical "condition" (10 minutes with a certain doctor and 20 bucks under the table, apparently)

In CT they decriminalized weed.  Any amount less than an ounce is acceptable... (I think)

But technically it's still illegal...

Well it will probably be contested at a federal level and go to the Supreme Court. At which point if the Supreme Court is a liberal majority, the ruling will probably stand. If its leaning more conservative then they will probably toss it out and it will be illegal once again. The date December 6th is how long governor John Hickenlooper has to acknowledge the vote making it official. At this point you will be able to smoke legally on a state level. In reality if all goes well it will probably be over a year before the people of Colorado can walk into a store and buy weed.  You will be allowed up to one ounce of dry marijuana per adult 21 and over and 6 plants of which no more then three at any time can be mature plants. If the growers harvest is more then the one ounce allowed, they get to keep the rest!  You will be able to sell weed if your business is licensed to do so and any adult 21 and over can "give" up to one ounce to another adult 21 and over.  There are also some figures on how much weed in solid form (brownies, cookies etc) you can have and liquid form (beverages with THC) but I don't recall those numbers.

They can't really do anything to Washington on constitutional grounds, as the federal government can't force something to be Illegal on the states. To even get the states to bend to its will on speed limits, the Federal government had the threaten to defund every state who did not comply, of their federal highway grants. The federal government can do something about the production and commercial sale of marijuana however, we have yet to see what Attorney General Holder has to say.

I think you mean "controlled"

Incest is illegal, it's not like you can have a little incest at a time and be in the clear.

This is true, but if a state made incest legal, the federal government could do nothing about it. What the government can do is regulate production, and sale, of any substance. This is why prohibition prevented people from purchasing and manufacturing liquor, but couldn't prevent people from owning or consuming it.

Unfortunately I live in Canada where apathy has allowed an extreme minority to institute mandatory minimum sentencing on a plant. Hooray for us!  The lack of interest or concern in this country politically is sad. Only 61% of Canadians came out to vote in 2011s federal election here. And we now have a conservative majority because of it.
