Using the KBC Poker with iPad
« on: Mon, 12 September 2011, 19:31:07 »
Not sure if there are any iPad users out there but the Poker works great with the iPad. I saw a video on You Tube showing typing on the iPad with the Poker and the camera adapter.  So I purchased the adapter and figured I would try it. Really works great.

Right now I'm sitting back in my recliner typing away with both my iPad and my Poker on my lap. Who needs a laptop?

Okay, now one more experiment - will the Poker work with the iPhone? Now that would really look kind of funny....

Let me answer my own question - the Poker does not work with the iPhone - well at least the 3GS which is the model I have.

You mean this clip?

My guess is iPad2 supports other USB devices via Camera Adapter, and iPhone doesn't.

The camera adapter doesn't work for the iPhone, even if the iPhone is jailbroken. My other hobby is with the Apple iOS world.

This is fine with me that the Poker doesn't work with the iPhone as it really is a little small to read for long periods and would look a little silly with a keyboard hanging off it.

Still am thrilled I'm able to use it with the iPad. For all the internet surfing at home there really isn't any need to use the laptop as the iPad fits the bill perfectly and even more so with the Poker.

Does this work with iPad2 also?  Anyone have the link to the adapter that makes this work?  I got wifey an iPad for our anniversay, also to support AAPL for ripster's sagging retirement.

Relax ripster, that one was a joke.

When you hookup a keyboard to the iPad, can you flip through screens or toggle through open applications with it (like with Alt-Tab or something) ?

The adapter is the Camera adapter for the iPad. I don't see it being able to tab through different applications but the Poker sure is so much nicer to type on than the iPad.

I'm also not sure if any of the other keyboards will work with this adapter but the Poker does. I think the Poker works as it doesn't pull a lot of power in order to work.

i tried several keyboards on iPad2 with apple ipad camera connection kit. It said something like "USB device is drawing too much current...". Keyboards tested: KBC Poker, HHKB Killer (named by Ripster), Filco 87...and some other. None of them works.

Please read reviews on Amazon. Due to a "feature" of iOS 4.2 upgrade last December, some USB devices drawing current exceeding the limit set by iOS 4.2 can no longer work. If you have a iPad first generation with iOS prior to that, you may still have a chance.

My iPad is the original iPad - I guess the iPad 1. Now the iOS version I'm running is the most up to date at 4.3.3

I can confirm that the HHKB Pro does not work after the patch... which is rather distressing, and even in the old patch, it disconnects after some time of use (around 10 minutes) and cannot reconnect back unless you restart the ipad, which makes the whole thing rather pointless because you would only want to connect a keyboard to ipad for long typing session. Attempts have also been made using the app resupport in order to use hhkb after the patch but experienced no luck, i forgot the numbers, but resupport ups the amp supported slightly, which makes pokers fine (confirmed) but not hhkb

I suppose if one were so inclined to want to do so enough, you could always feed any keyboard power from elsewhere.

My poker and Filco work fine with my wife's iPad 2 (iOS 4.2.1).  It first says it's not supported but you just tap OK and then it works.

No key combos work, AFAIK not even ctrl-c, etc.  The 'made for iPad' bluetooth keyboards are really a lot more functional (they have home, cut, copy, paste, volume, et al.) if you can stand the crappy rubber domes.
I'm back.

For power you could pop open the camera connection kit, and then pull the gnd and vcc pins out. But you'd also need a Y cable that'd split the data and clock from the vcc and gnd from the poker. (if I had a poker and and iPad I would be all over doing this) Plug the vcc and gnd part of the Y cable into a AA battery pack/wall etc. Shoot me a pm If you were going to do this, I'll help as much as possible. I also have school and an AP class so school this semester is going to be tough and time-consuming. Sweet idea though.

Also, we should get the scancodes from the Bluetooth iPad board so we can implement them into a poker (no idea on programming teensies) so I'm no help but just an idea

I think it'd be simpler to get a couple of extension cords instead. Plug one into the poker and then that kit thing, only it has had it's power wire severed and run instead to the other one which is running off of something powered. Unless the ipad or whatever would then assume that the device doesn't exist because is isn't pulling any power or something.

Found a way to work around the "USB device drawing too much power" issue with iPad2 and KBC Poker connection.

Need the following:
1. usb y cable x 1
2. Camera kit x 1
3. USB battery pack (travel) or USB power adapter (office or home)

Steps:
1. connect USB y cable to USB power adapter or battery pack
2. Connect camera kit to iPad2
3. Connect USB y cable to camera kit
4. Connect USB y cable to KBC Poker

Done

LOL! ok the funny thing is that's my clip. I made it long time ago, just wanna test my new tripod with my crappy oldy camera. And sorry for my slow typing, I just didnt prepare for that, didnt know what to do, didnt know what to type etc

Anyway back to the thread, Im now still using it (my red switch KBC Poker) with my 4.3.3 JBd iPad 2 without a problem (im hardly go AFK, just plug the KB in and smashing the h*ll out of it till the work done). Will try to randomly leave the KB idle for say 10m to see if it gonna stop responding or not.

P.S: with Poker i can select words (Fn_L + Shift + WASD), Ctrl C - Ctrl V is Win + C, Win + V (this is apple OS think bout it lol)

Don't know if this helps, but my 87U and Leopold work with the iPad 1 running iOS 5.0.1. It gives the usual error about not being supported but works fine. Strangely enough, the first time I plugged in the 87U, it activated the Japanese keyboard. But after deleting that keyboard it hasn't come back.

I can't say for sure but I've heard that the keyboards won't work with IOS 5.  I've stayed with 4 and all my keyboards - Poker, Filco TKL and my Realforce 87U work fine with the iPad 1.

I tried last week at the Apple Store with an Apple keyboard.  No joy; I got BOTH errors.  ripster thinks I'm a frakking idiot, and that if I would just close the windows, all would be fine.  I disagree, but may give it another try... FOR SCIENCE.

I think the best solution is to get a little battery powered USB to Bluetooth HID converter.  Anyone seen one?  Anyone know how to make one?

Has anyone gotten this to work without the additional USB adapter/battery pack.  This could be the reason I need to buy the Poker X with engraved Black PBTs I've been eyeing here.

Could you plug the keyboard cable into one end and iPad cable into the other end of one of these?

That's just gay!  ;-P

You need a power injection to make the keyboard work.  Stick a powered hub in there, and you're golden.
