Post your workspace/mad laboratory!
« on: Tue, 09 July 2013, 01:06:36 »
Interested to see where everyone does their modding, I'm just set up in the kitchen temporarily but when my FX-888 arrives I'll probably set up out in the shed. Just harvesting some old white Alps switches while I wait for my plate to get laser cut!

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Nice kitchen, bueller.;)
However, I'd move this thread to geekhack media.
I'll post my workspace when I clean up the mess:D

bueller you use the non variable temperature iron for soldering and desoldering, no problems with burning and lifting pads?

Had a couple of lifted pads but that's because the switch pins had been bent and I had to bend them back, otherwise it's been fine. Won't be using it for long though, ordering a hakko station from dx this week.

nice to know, cause I was eyeballing new Weller military solder station and had the desolder option of the sucker as an attachment. Even though its not variable temp this stations were made back in the 90's I believe and they were made for PCB soldering and desoldering jobs, so the way the temperature is controlled is by a magnet, so once when the solder tips hit 300-320C then the iron shuts off and that's how temp is controlled, while the temp on the solder sucker hits at around 380-400C which is really needed for desolder and sucking out the solder. But I already have the cheapo Weller 100 that is variable, yes its cheap but holds temps really good, quality is there.

That's where I spend all my free time:
28741-0
That's CNC router / milling machine and control hardware. Dell Precission, 20" Dell screen, G81 keyboard and stock Dell mouse.
What do I do with it? Currently I learn how to use it, doing simple things like engraving wood and laminates, cutting some parts for RC models out of Aluminium and Carbon. Who knows what to do later. I'd like to do keyboard cases but I don't have tools to anodize them. I could do acrylic or PVC ones pretty easily though.

Just my simple soldering station:

I also mod a lot on my desk (I'll move the soldering station to near my desk and work with both places)

I also have "my" woodshop but I don't have any good pictures of it.

Suddenly I though this topic was about something like this:

http://gadgetsin.com/set-a-mini-office-cubicle-playset-on-desktop.htm
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

What do you think of the Biltema soldering station vun? We don't have that many good cheap alternatives in our country and I'm considering getting one.

I do all my soldering and modding at my desk.  Just move the keyboard out of the way for whatever I'm working on.

Here is my little storage area for all my keyboard stuff and soldering gear.

It works like a charm so far, highly recommend it.
Although I do want to replace it with the fx888, but there's no real reason other than getting to use Hakko tips and some peace of mind.
Shouldn't be any issues with the Biltema station though, I've got a friend who's done a lot of soldering with his and he thinks it's fantastic.
