Keyboard cycle strategy
« on: Tue, 15 October 2013, 09:07:54 »
Many of us have multiple (4+) keyboards, but likely don't have multiple computers. How do you decide which keyboard to use? How often do you cycle through different keyboards? What is your strategy?

What feels good, do it ;)

For me I tend to stick to full size at work and switch to hhkb at home with the laptop.  :thumb:

plug in both keyboards and use one for the left hand and another one for the right hand. Then you don't have to cycle to often.

but be careful, your brain gets hurt when you use buckling spring on one hand and topre on the other...

I like the Model M, but sometimes the noise it makes is just too loud... then I switch to the hhkb...

I only plan to have 2 or 3 mechs. One at home for my home desktop and one (75%) for travel when I need to use my notebook at the university or somewhere else. I thought to use the 75% for work as well, but maybe I'll just get a mech for work as well. I hope this'll be all and my wallet doesn't want to burn my as I'll be burning my money on mechs and stuff.

If they made a vertically revolving "lazy susan" device, that would be awesome.

Like this...

(aglow in his own brilliance)

... except instead of hotdogs... keyboards!

(blinks)

That would be awesome. Awkward, yeah, but in an awesome sort of way. Just make the revolution more of an oval, it could work.

I am the Kanye West of keyboard ideas.

When the fingers get board it's time to change it up. So about 3 times a year for me.

Short mini USB cables connected to each keyboard and a USB extension to computer makes swapping easy and fast.

I have more than ten.  One stays in use all the time at work (trusty FC200R).  The rest get switched in at home when I find myself missing them.  Usually every two weeks I change it up.  My vintage ones I don't use very often, as I have them for sentimental value.  The KMAC2 is the best keyboard ever made and it gets swapped in more than the others.  ;D

unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

They have those in Korea.  They keep them stocked with KMACs and Leopolds. :p

Like most others, it's when I get bored of it. Right now, I'm still loving my Hammer Gh60 with 55g clears, but I picked up my model F AT last night, so I might switch back since I have some reports to type out

Random - when I feel like it.

Although I find that I am favouring blacks at work, and switching between everything else at home.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

start out my day with quieter Filco and if I'm feeling some kind of way; I'll switch to the Uni.

Once my HHKB gets here tomorrow; the Filco Minila will be my dedicated laptop keyboard and the Uni and HHKB will trade in and out on my work desk.

I'll also definetely bring the HHKB when I go in to the office for my internship.

I keep two on each desk (home and work) one is primary and the other one rotates. At home I have a Leo TKL Brown always ready and then one of my 104-key units for when I need the keypad. Right now the alt at home is a completely stock WASD v1 Brown. At work there is always a Model M in front of me with a retro MS mouse holding modern laser innards. Usually there is a Poker next to that for occasional use.

Then there are keycaps!  Mostly they stay in one place on a keyboard after I have it just right, but sometimes change is good.  Why, just today I switched a Klaxon RoW F5 for a new Reddit keycap.

The theater hot dog carousel would be totally awesome. With a random number generator it could be like a Wheel of Keyboard Fortune! Some days you'd get a winner like a Ducky Green and some days you'd get a Dell rubber dome to remind you just why you spend so much money on input devices!

Nice idea for a thread, thanks!

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!

Wait a minute.  We're supposed to actually USE our keyboards?  I thought it was like people who collect sneakers.  You just proudly display them for people who don't understand your obsession.
