[IC] Split 60% - Ergodox meets GH60
« on: Sun, 23 February 2014, 04:02:44 »
I've always been interested in the idea of an Ergodox with standard staggering so I thought I'd gauge interest here to see what people think of the layout I've knocked up.

The main benefits of this would be the ability to move between keyboards much easier and also the ease in finding keycap sets in Cherry/DCS/SA profile. We would need to get space-bars made however I have chosen the 2.75 size key which all manufacturers have for the R-Shift key. You will also notice I decided to go with a fourth mod on the bottom left hand side, this was done to shift the space-bar across so that it can accommodate people with larger hands.

Option A --- Standard key sizes but the two sides don't match together perfectly on the bottom row.

Option B --- Both sides have matching stagger on the bottom row so it looks more symmetrical. Only problem is combination of 1.25 and 1 unit bottom row mods, the space-bar may be too far left for people with larger hands.

Option C --- Still with the matching stagger, this drops one of the left hand side mods in favor of 1.5 unit keys. I feel like this is a good mix but we would probably need to use blanks for that left win-key.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Very interesting.  Did you have in mind for it to be a rectangular layout as it is in the mockup, or would it be two hand pieces like the edox but staggered?

Yep that's the plan, then they can be tented and angled at will. Kind of like the G80-5000 or the Microsoft Natural but in two pieces like the ED.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

This I could get behind.  Sounds interesting!

I like either Option A or Option B.  Might be worth mocking up Option B with three 1.5x mods on the left bottom row?  It would probably look funny and loses the functionality of that fn key though.  That said, I don't ever use my right alt or ctrl keys, so I could make do with making one of those an fn key over there.

Signature Plastics actually makes 3x keycaps which is what I am going to use when building this:
55353-0
That is also the size of the minila spacebar, which opens up some possiblities.

Wasn't aware of that, opens up some more possibilities.

I think you need to move the right space over to the left instead of ending where the N key ends. If you look at the Matias ergo pro pictures http://matias.ca/ergopro/pc/, the space bar on the right goes further over to the left and doesn't extend very far to the right.

Maybe something like this:
55642-0

I really like this one. The layout is complete. I may be interested even with no split option.

I would be interested in option b. Would be an interesting keyboard to use.
