Nice coiled USB cords
« on: Tue, 24 February 2015, 16:54:15 »
My old Apple Extended Keyboard II has a really great long coiled cord. Would love an equivalent for a USB mini connection. Anybody have any faves?

Zeal all the way, dude does incredible work.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

What does the "Coils are for cosmetic purpose ONLY" (zealpc.net) mean?
Are they not "springy" like coiled cables found ie. on headphones? >.>

I have never seen Pexon's cables,  I am sure they are great.  I have been a customer of ZealPC, and he makes really nice cords with many colors and options.. along with being a super nice guy.  So I would check him out for sure.

Correct, they are still springy, however, just not quite so spring as a factory coil.
Zeal's cables are hand coiled. When a factory coils cables on a product the wire is actually formed in a coiled shape.
Whereas zeal takes straight cable, tightens it around a core, and uses heat to form the wire. [my rough knowledge of the process]
I have two coils that have been in and out of use for about a year, and are currently hanging from a hook on the wall behind my computer,
neither coil I purchased from zeal has lost its shape. The last few coils on one end are a bit looser than the rest;
however, even my strict tastes aren't offended. If you want a coil to sometimes stretch out while you pull your peripheral, zeals coils are fine.
If you want a coil to stretch out for extended periods of use, they'll likely lose their shape quicker than you expected. However, a factory coil, if expanded for hours at a time, will also lose shape.
THESE ARE MY OFFICIAL NOTES ON COILED CABLES.

Thanks for the info!
Now I wonder if the reason for handcoiling is the lack of a good source for coiled wire...

You probably couldn't sleeve coiled wire, even if you could buy it. And you couldn't have any straight ends.

I have a coiled Pexon cable, and the coils are nice, and I have a mimic cable on the way with a coil in it, so I will be able to compare the two. I will have to a Zeal cable next. An excuse to get another board is to test out the zeal cables.

I care more about the coil really. Don't even really want fancy sleeves. My ideal would be the quality and consistency of a thick glossy old phone handset cable.

I can source something like that if you were ok with black in 5 ft increments.

sounds interesting! when you say 5 feet, would that be the coiled length?

Sounds like you both want a lindy cable.

looks a little short -- I guess the "2m" is if you stretched it all out?

I forgot about lindy, that's a good option, too.

Something like this, I'd be buying pre-coiled raw cable in a specified length and then putting requested ends on it.  From what I can tell from the site I'm getting them from, the length is the extended length, but I can get a 5ft coil, too.  It's just going to be tremendously expensive.
