Hi,

I have a HHKB Pro 2 Type-S and a HHKB Professional JP and am interested in hearing about lubing Topre. I've read quite a bit throughout Geekhack and on /r/mechanicalkeyboards and can't seem to get a consensus so hopefully this thread will help me out with making a decision.

In addition to the questions below I'd also greatly appreciate some links showing lubing guides as the only times I've opened up my HHKB's is to install a Hasu controller.

Questions:

  • Do you lube topre? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • If you do lube, which lube do you use? Where do you buy it?
  • Thick lube or thin lube? I have read threads here and on /r/mechanicalkeyboards indicating using only one over the other but there seems to be a lot of conflicting info

Thank you!

I've lubed two novatouches w/ the red lube from elitekeyboards.

truthfully I don't know how much it really effects things- I suppose it's a little bit smoother. I only did it because I was also adding hyperspheres and figured I'd kill two birds w/ one stone while I had it open. I can't say it's really worth it to just lube topre unless you've got time to kill- others might disagree.

I don't think there are really any negatives, except if you end up using a lube that drips and causes corrosion on the domes.

I can't find the guide I used, but it's as simple as using a little paintbrush and applying some lube on where the sliders connect, I didn't use a lot but you could tell it had an impact immediately because the sliders weren't just moving w/ gravity anymore.

I lube because it helps make it feel nicer and sound quieter.

I think most people would say you should Use thick lube

I get lube from Techkeys

Just test it for yourself, let's say do 5 keys lubed (thin/thick) and see if you like them lubed.

I don't like them lubed as I like it out of the box and lubing them makes them somehow weird.
Edit: I use RF board
