Best Foam for Dampening Your Keyboard?
« on: Tue, 09 May 2017, 09:11:20 »
Once in a while I see people line the bottom of their 60% case with a thin sheet of foam to reduce the reverberation that the hollow metal case creates. I'm somewhat interested in experimenting with this and trying to coat the entire interior of the case (if possible). What material should I be using for this?

Neoprene foam, sometimes called sponge neoprene. 1/16th or 1/8" thickness, depending on the gap you have. You can get rolls on Amazon.

Just go to a craft store and get some craft foam like this. It's super-cheap and it works great.

I just bought shelf liner for 2$, cut it into pieces and put it inside my Magicforce 68. Also I've put two pieces together and cut to the size of the board and that's what I keep between my keyboard and the desk to isolate them. I don't hear any ping nose nor the wood echo, just keycaps clacking. Total cost 15 minutes of work and 2$. If you ask me the isolation of the keyboard from the desk helps more for the ping "issue" than stuffing foam inside.

I would recommend sorbothane acoustic dampening sheets. You can buy them from Amazon.

Second this. It's not cheap, but they are the most effective. 1/10" thickness is plenty.

Go to a local hardware store and buy a roll of shelf liner. Preferably the non-mesh one. Cheap and works.

If you want to go all of the way go buy the acoustic dampening sheets.

Do people put this inside a HHKB., especially a Type-S? If so, what exactly does it do?

You would gain more if you would cancel the bottom out noise with the hypersphere rings or chinese MX compatible stems with the rings preinstalled.

Would this work as well in an FC660C?

In my opinion, the fc660c is already rock solid and I don't think there was any impact from adding foam.

I have some of the above mentioned sorbotane mats in my FC660M and it does make a difference. But you are right, those boards are already rock solid and don't need much dampening.

Thanks for the input. I do enjoy the steel plates Leopold puts in their boards.
