2019: What are your keyboard plans?
« on: Thu, 25 April 2019, 14:15:32 »
I was surprised not to see one of these threads for 2019!

My plans are largely to get rid of things I don't really want anymore, receive things I've already ordered, and really try to get only things I know I'll like instead of trying everything and being disappointed. I'd rather not waste any more money on this hobby, but instead just get and keep things I like and recoup some cost on the other stuff.

-Sell Equalz One
-Sell black TEX TKL Case
-Sell KBP V80 Matias
-Sell Alps DSA Lightcycle
-Sell M65-A and extra metal base
-Sell the various MX Blacks I stocked up on when I was stupidly trying to find a smooth linear.

-Receive Ellipse F77, the ultimate clicky keyboard, and all the extra buckling spring caps I ordered with it (things are finally moving along, it seems, so I'm hopeful this will happen this year!)
-Receive GMK DMG
-Receive DMG Artisan (first artisan, not my thing, but I got it just because of the set)
-Receive ePBT Slate
-Receive cruciformer and fix my BOX switches.
-Receive nutcracker from Massdrop.
-Try out these BOX Blacks and BOX Dark Yellows on something after I've lubed them.

-Buy Primus to replace M65-A since it will probably solve the issues I have with 65% (no delete key, no F keys).
-Maybe buy Majita (sp?) ergo keyboard or VE.A R2. But not sure if I'm really still interested in those.
-Maybe buy Niu Mini ortho 40% from KBDFans. This would probably violate my rule of not trying things unless I know I'll like them, but it's pretty cheap.
-Maybe make a Model M from the extra Ellipse caps and Unicomp inner assembly I have.

Things I've already done:
-Buy el cheapo Velocifire to try out Outemu Browns (only about $7 with discounts and turk money)
-Waste money on ultrasonic cleaner
-Buy and install shelf liner in a keyboard (pretty good results actually).

Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

I need to unload all the stuff I'm never going to use and semi-organize the rest.

But probably just let it all sit in boxes and say the same thing next year.

Doubt I'll buy anything.

Haha, that's basically where I am. It's surprisingly easy to sell stuff on r/mechmarket though; offers usually come within a few minutes. Going to the post office is the worst part.

My plan is to learn to use Kicad and build a fully custom split board using the switches and keycaps from an AEK II.

The year is well underway but I plan to continue to collect some artisans and vintage stuff I'd like to have. Other than that, mostly coasting along building keyboards for others and figuring out any new DIY projects. I'd also like to clear out some of my less used stuff.

Try to sell off more of my stuff. Annoying having over 20 boards and using only 2. I have made good progress already but need to wrap it up.

Find the rest of my keyboards.

Most of them were put into storage due to a house move at the end of last year, and I only have an HHKB, a RealForce, one SSK, one old Ducky Shine, a QFS and a CODE left.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Restore my three model f and my beamspring.

Buy more pbt. Start hating gmk and its prices and the group leaders that make group buys ultraexpensive by adding keys beside wkl and standard bottom row in ansi and iso.

Why are you confused?
I've looked at old posts, in those times the group leader stated what was the GB fee, but now it's all profit and scammers that earn 20 USD for each set.

I will try to give more desk time to the boards that currently get too little of it. If I'm feeling very radical, then maybe I'll get my Realforce from work and bring the FC660C back there.

Same. I'm on a self-imposed moratorium on new board orders until the HHKB refresh details come to light.

Aside from that:

Ditch a couple non-firmware programmable TKLs and Vortex boards that I no longer use
Receive the Planck, keys, and holy panda clone switches I ordered from MAssdrop
Receive the white M60-A from Rama (droooooooool)
Keep using my HHKBs and HHKB clones (3x Tokyo60), and ignore my ortholinears and boards larger than 60%

Try once more to sell the keyboards in my closet I don't use anymore.

Get myself one of those Leopold keyboards I've heard so much about.

Try out a buckling spring keyboard.

And for now, that's about it. :)
Current driver: HHKB Pro 2 (BKE Ultra Lights), Wooting One w/ Flaretech Red switches and HyperX PBT keycaps.

Other keyboards I own and like: Realforce 87U Variable Weight, Realforce 87U 55g, Niz Plum, Magicforce 108 Gateron Reds w/ O-Rings.

Other keyboards I have: Magicforce 68 Cherry MX Brown, Havit Low-Profile Kailh Blue, Logitech K740,
Yeah, it's a loooooooooooot of keyboards. :P

I want to get back into the hobby. I was knee-deep in at one point but then mental health and being broke happened and I had to sell all my keyboards. I think if I get a stable job this year, I'd like to buy a KBDFans WKL Tofu kit. Nothing too fancy, but I've always wanted one and I feel like it would make a great reentry point.

I plan to keep using the two keyboards I've been using for the past 5 years; a Ducky YOTD at home and an IBM SSK at work.

If I make any change at all, it would be to buy a Unicomp so I can have a Windows key on my work keyboard, but I doubt I'll even do that...

  • Get a really nice TKL/WKL built up, never use it.
  • Expand the 65% collection with a gasket mount, write a review about how it's the best.

Wait until 2020 so I can get a Silo Beamspring keyboard. Those look awesome.
Linears are for linear people. No offense if you use linears.
I prefer tactile switches, I'm reluctantly using the AULA SI-859 and my pronouns are she/her.

2019 has been rather slow for me in regards to keyboards. I really haven't done anything on my list. I'm wondering if I've waited too long to sell some stuff like the M65-A since the M65-B is in GB for the same price. I mainly want to offload all the crap I've accumulated and just stick with what I like, but I'm too lazy to get things organized and take pictures.

-Sell Equalz One
-Sell black TEX TKL Case
-Sell KBP V80 Matias
-Sell Alps DSA Lightcycle
-Sell M65-A and extra metal base
-Sell the various MX Blacks I stocked up on when I was stupidly trying to find a smooth linear.
-Sell /dev/tty keycaps

-Receive Ellipse F77 (Orders have begun shipping, but mine definitely won't ship until next year, so this is off the list).
-Receive GMK DMG
-Receive DMG Artisan (Surprised I actually like an artisan. Not sure I can stomach spending money on more of these though).
-Receive ePBT Slate (Cool set, nothing to put it on just like every other keyset)
-Receive cruciformer and fix my BOX switches. (Works like a charm)
-Receive nutcracker from Massdrop. (Also works like a charm)
-Try out these BOX Blacks and BOX Dark Yellows on something after I've lubed them.
-Receive RAMA U80-A. (I guess this isn't shipping until February or something)

-Buy Primus (Still waiting on GB)
-Maybe buy Majita (sp?) ergo keyboard or VE.A R2. (Neither has entered GB yet)
-Maybe buy Niu Mini ortho 40% from KBDFans. (Probably, not going to do this now)
-Maybe make a Model M from the extra Ellipse caps and Unicomp inner assembly I have.

Unexpected purchase:
-MelGeek MG Amber keyset. (won't receive until next year)
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

Just the very end of 2019 is seeing me get a very unplanned Logitech G810 at a bargain that's supposed to be almost new… will see when it's shipped.

Otherwise I'm getting myself a linear keyboard, either reds or speeds.

I got to try navy box thick clicks, which I am convinced is a great switch that I really need to build with. I've also convinced myself that the end game for ergo keyboards is  a Dactyl, so I'll be trying to integrate the two into what will most likely end up in an extremely expensive disaster.

Also, I'm switching to emacs
