HHKB Pro 2 seems discontinued in Japan
« on: Sun, 02 June 2019, 23:56:50 »
My friend's currently in Japan and he can't seem to find the HHKB Pro 2 in stores like Bic/Yodobashi in any location (including Akihabara). It seems they've discontinued it.
I bought mine in Japan late last year, when they had all HHKB variants (except Type-S), so this is quite shocking to me.

Perhaps the Pro 3 is really coming, like hinted at the Cali keyboard meetup?

I can confirm that they're no longer available in most stores. Although, there are still some places you can buy then (mostly JP layout)

Not that I know of, but the ones I saw have regular prices (around 20k+ yen)

I'm guessing that the stores just let them sell out naturally and just didn't restock. I noticed a lot of foreigners buying HHKBs and Realforces when I was in Akihabara.

I'm eagerly awaiting any news about the Pro 3.

Any recommendations of stores to check out? Thanks.

If they are letting the Pro 2 sell out because the Pro 3 is on the way, it's odd that they haven't announced it yet. I'm on pins and needles.

There are tons of them available on ebay and amazon, why not just buy one online?

He isn't saying this because he can't find one my guy, it's speculation for the new version.

It’s a neat experience to buy one when you’re in Japan. Also with the foreigner and cc discounts, it’s very cheap to buy it in Japan.

Some stores will discount you the sales tax (~8%) if you present your passport. Big stores like Bic Camera and Yodobashi definitely do this. Additionally, Bic Camera and Yodobashi also give further discounts (5%) if you pay with a credit card because they're trying to promote it. So if you use a credit card that has no forex fee, then you're saving even more than buying on amazon.jp.

Though, if you're looking to find a HHKB in Japan, it's becoming increasingly difficult.

1/ is the credit card have to be issue by any local jp Bank or any Visa/ Master Card is Good?

2/ Why do you say find a HHKB in Japan is difficult now? I'm looking for a HHKB Bluetooth - ANSI layout (I cannot stand narrow spacebar on
JP Layout), are they discontinue it?

thank you

1/ I used Visa/Mastercard and it was accepted. I think the discounts are sponsored by Visa.

2/ This is the entire topic of this thread. They're discontinued. The stores no longer carry it even though they've traditionally carried it and it generally wasn't an issue finding them. It generally was a bit difficult to find the BT/Type-S variants in store compared to the normal Pro-2s. You're going to have a much harder time trying to source one. Your best bet might be to order online from a Japanese site and have it shipped to your hotel or just buy one online in your home country.

On the topic of ordering keyboards in Japan as a foreigner, it can be quite a hassle if you don't have a friend living in the area and don't want to fork up the fees involved in a proxy service.
I really wanted to get my hands on the R2 LE as soon as it came out (to test out all the extra features and to return to Topre) and ordering on Amazon isn't possible if you don't have a complete address + phone number. This meant getting all my family friend's address information which some people doubtlessly would hesitate to share, and then going to pick it up in person.

If you don't have a friend, you can't just get it shipped to a hotel or anything unfortunately (especially with how varying the shipping times can be), you'll have to pay for proxy service (none of which allowed to pick up the item in person). It's still probably cheaper than getting it through a foreign vendor, but it'll take longer to ship and there's much more room for complications.

You can have it shipped to a nearby convenience store near you (e.g. Lawson or Family Mart). You can pay via CC, Amazon cards (convenience stores sell them) or COD depending on the amount or seller.

That might be only for certain products; when I attempted to purchase the items, it had to be to via credit card and to a home address; it didn't offer a convenience store option and certainly not COD.
