75% or TKL?
« on: Sat, 05 October 2019, 12:58:28 »
I have been meaning to get a custom TKL like the KBD8x. But it still isn't ready, and the extras aren't available yet (if ever).

It's got me rethinking whether I really need a TKL. I am currently using one with a laptop setup, and it is great.

But in my desktop setup, where I have a desk, monitor, and below-desk keyboard tray, I am thinking I could use a 75%. That layout would allow more room to use a trackball if I wanted to (the tray is too low to use a mouse, which I use on the desk above).

I thought I needed a TKL because I use the navigation cluster heavily, and have good muscle-memory for the 104/87-key layout. But maybe I could get used to using the four-or-so keys on the right-hand column, if I remap them.

I have excellent keycaps sets that would suit a TKL or 75%. I am not sure what to get at this point. It would be a KBD75 (latest model) or the KBD8x mkii, 62 gr Zilents. What would you use for a centered keyboard on a low keyboard-tray?

I would say get a 75%. More ergonomic to have your keyboard and mouse on the same level, and you keep pretty much the same amount of dedicated nav keys in a smaller form factor.

Thanks, yeah. I underwent a sort of evolution.

With custom boards, I started seriously thinking about a 65%. I like the TADA68. But when I tried the FC660C, I found the lack of certain keys annoying. And the layout wasn't ideal.

I tried a few KBD75s, and they were surprisingly good. Enough space to type comfortably, all the essential office keys are there. Just have to get used to the new nav positions. Maybe instead of waiting for the KBD8x mkii, I will get a KBD75.

Just because you have a 75% keyset, not all follow the same layout.

Yeah, the 75% keeps all of the nav keys, but in a different layout. I'm not sure it'll be as fast hunting for the Home/End PgUp/PgDn keys that are laid out in a line down the right-hand column.

That's really the only major consideration. That, and the lack of spacing between the arrow keys and the bottom row (and the F-keys).

Leslieann, no worries, I have a couple of extensive GMK and ePBT sets that cover all layouts.

Even though I cherish my numpad as though it were my child, if I was forced to go with either 75% or TKL...then I'd go with TKL. Literally ANY day of the week, I'd go with TKL.
Linears are for linear people. No offense if you use linears.
I prefer tactile switches, I'm reluctantly using the AULA SI-859 and my pronouns are she/her.
