Keyboard Modding Question
« on: Thu, 31 October 2019, 02:57:32 »
Hello, I could go into detail of how I started. But ultimately after hundreds of dollars, in my lifetime of the "best keyboard" quest.

I have several Realforce RGB Topre boards. Through some online research, I found out that it uses a JST PH 2.0mm 5 pin female plug. However... After some experimentation, I come into a dilemma...

The stock USB cord is this generic black cable. I prefer the more resilient quick detach cables with the aviator separator, like shown here:

I have all the parts to build my own cable, which I got on this website:
https://zapcables.com/diy-detachable-usb-cable-kit/

The part I can't decide on, is if I should have the aviator cable terminate into the 5-pin JST, or if I should mod the case to fit a USB-C breakout board instead, like this one:

I personally prefer the breakout board because it would be easier to switch USB-C cables, and I wouldn't need to open up my keyboard case as often. But then I need to modify the case to fit the board, the cable routing channels would probably not fit, and I'd have to drill+tap M3 screws (?) to keep it secure to the keyboard case.

Also.. the small 5mm Inner Diameter EMI Noise Cable Clip I bought, is too big to fit inside the keyboard housing. I know the happy hacking topre boards have a large compartment to house one in the back. Sucks!

Anyway, I was curious if other people run into this problem when modding their keyboards, and how they resolve it.

As i see it there is not an universal answer, if you want to mod it might as well go all in and put the USB C in and make the space, and if the keyboard does no already have an emi filter it is probably because it does not need it (USB is differential, so far less susceptible to emi) so no need to fit one, if it has one well you can always reuse it.
And often when adding usb sockets to keyboards not having them you can either glue it to the case or screw it in place.
If you are willing to go that far USB-C would seem to me as well like the best option but if you do not feel like going quite that far, yeah the JST termination would be the best.

Did you ever decide on how to mod this board? I just bought one and wanted to do USB-C
