Linear/Clicky Switch suggestions for a Orion v3 build
« on: Tue, 10 March 2020, 16:33:35 »
Hello keyboard enthusiasts,

I'm struggling on what switches to use on my Duck Orion v3. I have two PCB's to fill up and I'm undecided.

In the past, I've used:

- 62g ergoclears
- 62g lubed zealios
- 62g lubed kailh speed silvers
- 63.5g lubed mx blacks *
- 65g ergoclears
- 65g lubed gat blacks
- 65g lubed zealios
- briefly tested gateron blues i believe?

I just sold my Jane v2 w/ 63.5g lubed retooled blacks. I enjoyed these switches, but they weren't perfect. They felt either too heavy or too light :P which makes zero sense. I know.

These 62g Kailh Speed Silvers are amazing smooth and have the least wobble of any switch I've ever used. If the actuation pt wasn't so high, and throw shortened, I would definitely consider using these again.

Are there any linear switches that are super ridgid (least amount of wobble) but amazing once lubed?

Sorry for the ramblings of a maniac. I'm without my precious Jane v2 and in need of suggestions.

Tough crowd.

Does anyone else agonize over these decisions like me?

If you liked retooled blacks but not the weight why not buy some more retooled blacks and spring swap them to 58.5 G springs from Thic Thock DL. I think that weight is the most balanced out there.

I am typing of TX65G springs and i kinda have the same issues sometimes it feels right and the other times it just feels exhausting to type on it. So i think 58.5 G spring would be the best balanced one for long typing sessions.

For the other PCB i would just leave it as a spare or until you found out what you want to do with it.

I think Tealio v2 from ZealPC fits this category, as well as any of the JWK-made linears (look for switches branded Durock or Everglide).

MX linears I think are sufficiently low wobble too.

All of the above I think require switch films in order to make the housing more rigid and stable.

I've never taken the time to install films before. Do they actually make a difference? I notice a lot of people skip these.

Are Tealio v2 truly any different than Gaterons? Aside from the spring.

I'm leaning toward Retooled blacks @ 62g SPRiT (have leftovers) in my plastic plate.

Thic Thoc DL? TX65G? I'm so out of the loop. Homelab'in and home improvement have consumed my world.

I've been pretty settled on 62g but I can't say I've tried anything less than that.

The title suggests you're also looking for clickies? Not much talk of it otherwise though. I believe Kaihua's box switches are factory lubed. I don't bother lubing things myself, or at least haven't yet (haven't tried to restore any of my Alps switches yet), but box jades are really, really nice for clickies, if you want to take a look. Very smooth, very tactile, with a deep and satisfying soundtrack.

I'm not sure how the actuation point compares to speed silvers, but they are relatively high on the clickbar box switches.

Try Alpacas. Those are pretty good linears imo :)
