Hello from Dallas texas
« on: Fri, 08 May 2020, 14:55:17 »
Hello! I have browsed the site before but never made an account and I've owned a couple mechs but decided that I delve into something a little more luxurious. I am definitely going to try and join on the SOAP drop when it comes around but had a couple questions about another drop im interested in. Namely the Returned Wing drop. I have yet to solder anything and am seeing that their is going to be an offer for a hotswappable option but it has LED's. I dont mind learning but would that call for me soldering? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Piwi. Welcome to Geekhack.

I don't do the LEGO thing, not yet anyway. What is this SOAP drop you speak of? I found an IC for a SOAP macro pad, is that what you mean?

I imagine that if the board is hot swappable and also supports LEDs, that the LEDs would be surface mount, like this:

If they are, unless the board doesn't come fully populated and you need to solder diodes, LEDs, etc, yourself, then no soldering should be required. I don't usually do the Drop/GB thing though. I could probably tell if you could link me.

What sort of switches have you tried? Which do you like?

Hello!

Yes the SOAP drop was the IC. I should have specified rather than a drop. The other is also an IC.

This is the link for the for the keyboard im interested in. In terms of switches I have used blues, reds, browns, and am currently using box royals. I was reading around and am leaning towards the drop inverted holy pandas. I figured I still have time to look around and do research until then.

Ah, I was probably just reading things wrong. I missed the keyboard IC entirely somehow. I read through the features and didn't see any specifics on how the kit will come in regards to the PCB. Is it hot swap an option just because the PCB accounts for it, and you have to solder in your own hot swap sockets, is the board fully populated? Can't say. You should probably ask in the IC.

So, all Cherry MX before the box royals? The box tactiles are the best modern tactiles I have tried. I haven't tried any fancy boutique switches though. Sounds like you prefer tactiles so far? Clicky guy myself.

Ah, that I will do.
I am really loving the box royals. These are a pleasure to type on, i'm just not too crazy about the board their on. I was considering just moving these to whatever I get next, but decided to go for something new altogether. And yes, all mx before these. I would like something clicky, just not sure what path to go. Also keeping my eyes on what keycap sets are coming out.

If you haven't already considered it, you should probably get a switch tester. Get one with box thick clicks (jade and navy) if you can. The navies may be a little too fatiguing if you're used to lighter switches, but the jades shouldn't take too much adjustment. They're considered by many to be the best modern clicky switch, as they're the only one that's really fundamentally any different from MX (which isn't too great), besides Matias (modern descendant of Alps, but inferior). Jades come closest to anything else I have felt to Alps SKCM blues. They're not quite as good as those or capacitive buckling spring, but they're not far off. Beam springs (considered to be the best clickies of all time, but extremely rare and desirable) are being resurrected, but who knows when for sure.

I know Zeal has their own tester that includes all of their switches, but I hear that alone costs $30. They would be another option for boutique tactiles, and a lot of people rave about them. Not sure if there's a tester with panda switches or not. KPrepublic has a 130 switch tester (although many are basically duplicates in that they're variants of the same switch) that has a great smattering of switch types. Mine just finally came in recently and it has been great to get the feel of various brands. Included in that tester are Everglides, which some people consider to be a nice cheap alternative to the more expensive boutique linears and tactiles like Zeals and Pandas. They certainly seemed pretty smooth to me.

I generally don't watch caps myself. Maybe, eventually. I'm usually happy with a cheap set of YMDK double shots, if that. lol

I didn't know zeal had their own switch tester. That might be something i'll have to look into seeing as that will probably be around the area I look for. It would be my best bet seeing as the Returned leaf group buy is looking to start in june.

As for keys I noticed that nearly all my peripherals are black so i might as well get keys to match.
