Hey keyboard enthusiasts,

We are Phase Studio. Two designers in Toronto, looking to run a keyboard group buy. We've gotten lots of responses from r/MechanicalKeyboards and r/Mechmarket and by popular request, we are now posting here.
To avoid breaking TOS, not all renders and links will be found in this thread. If I'm breaking TOS at any point please let me know and I will correct it. I'm trying to follow as best as I can.

Updates
  • Jan 20 - PCB Fabrication started, order sorting is next!
  • Oct 14 - We have changed the brass finish, this is resulting in darker brass colour. More info regarding this is on our discord. Overall quality is better. The previous finish wasn't passing QC. Scalability issues.
  • Aug 25 - Severe delays on the PCB orders actually going through. New PCB photos are in the discord if people are interested.
  • Jul 27 - Some manufacturing photos being posted on Discord, might be getting a video montage of the process!
  • Jun 24 - PCBs sorted out. Orders still being put in with manufacturers.
  • May 26 - Vendors getting in contact with manufacturers this week for everything except PCBs. Held up by COVID for PCBs.
  • May 11 - Some other prototypes ordered to check one last thing. All units will be ordered after that.
  • May 4 - Preparing to order boards from the manufacturer. Ironing out some details.
  • April 8 - Releasing plate files by month-end. Will have multiple variants.
  • April 2nd - MOQ reached for cases!
  • April 1st - Group buys are going live around noon EST. Sorry for the delays.
  • Mar 25 - The colours were murdered. Making a GB thread though!
  • Mar 11 - Groupbuy happening April 1st.
  • Mar 2 - Alexotos stream on Saturday, March 6th 1PM EST!.
  • Feb 10 - PCBs arrived and working! We will be scheduling streams soon.
  • Jan 14 - Slowly getting things together now. PCBs still on their way. Solderable plate tested and works great!
  • Jan 3 - Happy new year! New yellow colour sample is in and we're pretty happy with it, PCBs coming soon!
  • Dec 6 - New Prototypes being sent out soon, slow progress but still progress. PCB components have been sourced.
  • Nov 9 - PCBs have been ordered, final prototypes ordered. Hopefully, build streams by the end of the month!
  • Oct 24 - We are continuing development of the hot-swap PCB and also offering Wilbas soldered PCB :D
  • Oct 13 - Looking into Wilbas new Graphite PCBs instead, new IC posted.
  • Sept 22 - Photos from manufacturer https://imgur.com/gallery/ub6jLiZ
  • Sept 16 - JST Connector Pinout is wrong, jumping connections for prototype, will have to reroute
  • Sept 3 - Case being manufactured, looking into new PCB manufacturers
  • Aug 30 - White, Black, Blue, Purple, Yellow confirmed as colours
  • Aug 25 - New prototypes received, waiting on PCBs still
  • Aug 12 - PCB Prototypes Ordered, Case Prototype Shipping Tomorrow

Such a cool project. I probably won't get one because I have already spent quite a bit of money on keyboards recently, but  it's definitely looking good. I usually don't like big bezel boards but the way you have designed it really pops. Good luck with the group buy and I will definitely pay attention to how it comes out.

This looks amazing. Reminds me of something RAMA would design. Any chance we could get a PC case and plate? Something like the M65 Ice would look amazing with the lines on this thing.

What is the estimated weight and typing angle?

Estimated weight is 1.5kg / 3.3lbs for all aluminium board unassembled.
We are looking into brass bases which would bring it to 2.5kg / 5.5lbs.

Typing angle is 7°.

same question...
top mount and gasket do not seem to work together... unless the gasket is here for a different purpose.

Yeah, we will recorrect this to top isolation mount. We were incorrect with gasket. From where we have worked, gasket was defined as a piece of rubber between two materials/surface. We are going to be testing with o-rings on the screws though.

I was interested until i saw the GB is only for 100 units, 150 if they are feeling frisky?  :))

Hey, who am i to complain. I just got into this hobby couple of months ago, i was just splurging on keebs, keycaps and switches until last week. But i'm still open to get a few more boards. I was shocked myself when i found out that i spent almost $2,000 in a month, for stuff i won't even get few months from now (GMK Keycaps will be 2021) LOL but hey i wanted to support the enthu that designs great stuff, not the flippers. And i wanted to buy more, i just started but people who get me into this saying that i already sank deep! LOL

So i hope Unlimited GB would be possible.

With the port so low in the renders, is there a USB-C daughterboard involved?

That is a real pity, the board has a true retro feel to it but without ISO it is a no go.  Good luck with the project.

Have you then allowed for the USB port to move with the gasketed PCB / plate? I guess there won’t be a lot of movement involved.

But with gaskets, I still prefer the USB daughterboard. I do realise it will be more expensive.

Whatever you decide, I’m still very interested. This board is a real looker.

agree! in a gasket mount board (without USB daughterboard), there should be some space for the USB port to flex. (even though the board would not flex that much when type normally)
if the cutout is too tight-fit, there is a stress on the USB port, which is not good. (ref: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/h7gofy/polaris_owners_usb_port_stress/)

The daughter board isn't on any of the gaskets. It's completely separate and fits in the bezel at the back. There won't be any pressure on the USB port.

[IC] Titan65 // 65% Top Mount

Have you then allowed for the USB port to move with the gasketed PCB / plate? I guess there won’t be a lot of movement involved.

But with gaskets, I still prefer the USB daughterboard. I do realise it will be more expensive.

The daughter board isn't on any of the gaskets. It's completely separate and fits in the bezel at the back. There won't be any pressure on the USB port.

Thanks!

Sorry, we won't have this option. We are keeping price low by limiting layout options. We might do a R2 with a redesign and a different plate. I'd like to have a stepped caps lock :P We want to see how this goes first.

LOL

So i hope Unlimited GB would be possible.

i mean granted they changed it to unlimited, but first GB and unlimited is not a good combination to say the least

I showed this to my buddies, they are also interested, however, all of us don't have PayPal, as for me it's more like i cannot use PayPal, my account was hacked and PayPal has yet to reimburse the funds i left there, so i don't really feel safe using PayPal. I really appreciate the design. Very bold but simple.

I've been looking for something that has more aesthetic than a square box.

Not the biggest fan of the thicc bezels but certainly interested for the prospect of getting a board with no shipping charge as a local. That would be different!

Also +1 for non-hotswap option.

We won't have a non-hotswap version this time around. Wilbas WT65-A will fit the case and layout though. You won't be able to screw it into the plate though, and it would just be held in by switches.

Question tho, usually there are different layout options for soldered version right? Since this is hot-swap version only, is it possible to have a stepped caps lock on this one? Still new don't know a lot of stuff.

You wouldn't be able to do different layouts. Our plate will only support one layout as it's meant for hot swaps. It's difficult to support multiple layouts with the hotswap sockets.

Woo that's cloooose! Excited! What will the final colors be?

I wanted to get the purple one. Only if the blue one is a bit lighter, like sky blue or light blue, that's what i'll get. But i really wanted to see the protos first before i decide. Sadly Grey isn't an option. That would be the safest pick.

Still waiting on the prototypes and colour samples to confirm. The new renders are roughly what it should look like when powder coated.

We may end up anodizing the colours instead of powder coating. If we end up going that route MOQ for any one colour is 5 instead of 50.

We will do all colours, but it will be likely anodized. The colour will not be exact to the references. The delays on the prototype are because the manufacturers trying to get the anodized colours close.

We are aiming for the 24th of September. That's very dependant on manufacture prototype timing. Right now we are still on track though.

We won't have a non-hotswap version this time around. Wilbas WT65-A will fit the case and layout though. You won't be able to screw it into the plate though, and it would just be held in by switches.

Have you confirmed any other PCB's that may work in the case? I'm fine with the PCB not being able to be screwed on, but would really prefer to have a soldered version with a different layout. Thank you!

EDIT: Just realized, probably not, as they'll need to be compatible with the Unified C3 Daughterboard.

So the WT-65A works. However you'd need a different plate. We won't be offering a plateless option at group buy. We will however be releasing files necessary to make your own plate compatible with the board.

Right now the plate is 4mm thick with channels for the stabilizer wires.

Fantastic board! I filled out both interest checks, asking for blue and white. Just want to let you know I also would really love to see purple thrown in there. I think I'd end up buying one safe color and one more out there color such as purple. Fingers crossed theres no blocker, see you at the group buy :D!

White, Blue and Purple are all top picks for the colours! We will be going with the blocker layout though.

Oh that's cool, good work around. Do you think it affects sound/stiffness?

Price seems great. Design looks right up my alley but for some reason I have hard time seeing how it is in real life. Something about the steep angles from the bezels. Anyway for now I'm definitely in for this.

The plate is going to have silicone washers and strips on either side of it. They're relatively soft at 40 Shore A hardness. The washers will be arriving this upcoming week so I hope to try it out then. PCBs are naturally more springy. I'm suspecting it will still be relatively stiff as the force from keystrokes is mostly on the plate. The early prototype had a hollow sound to it. With the redesign that's been eliminated. I'm not sure if that's because of the rubber strips or the changes to the inner cavity. Either way, much happier with it. PCBs should be arriving next week so I'll be able to test it properly then. The brass base also makes it sound a bit deeper, the aluminum base I'm still quite happy with. Bug me again this time next week ;)

So there are prototype photos of the board up. Alexotos, Logan (the other designer) and myself will all be doing separate build streams and sound tests. We will announce those when those dates are decided.

Strange to have all of that thickness and the keycaps still stick up over the top edge, exposing the switch housings underneath.  I would prefer to see the pcb/plate assembly lowered at least a milimeter to hide the switches.

We have some more brass prototypes coming in. Brass is pretty much confirmed. The finish for it isn't confirmed as of yet.

If you're looking at the renders it's because I'm lazy and the plate is mated to the case rather than to the silicone strips. If you're looking at the photos it's because the manufacturer messed up and everything was offset by .6mm. We were also testing some other tolerances with it. The final shouldn't have the switches visible. :thumb:

Combination of being new to the scene, so I haven't seen much, and this being the first time I've ever seen something with this 'pyramid-esque' form factor. TL;DR it's new and innovative to me :))

My only comment would be regarding the bottom: It was a missed opportunity not to go with this Titan astrological symbol... (source Titan

Then it might not be for you. You just have to decide if the looks out weight the sound for you. Sound might be the most subjective thing there is. It sounds fine to me.

It's hard to give an estimate as we don't know the final quantity sold. The manufacturer can handle about 250 boards/month, possibly more if we reach a certain threshold. Shipping easily is another month or two. Boards should start being delivered at the very least 4 months after GB ends. COVID restrictions are also something I can't account for. By end of the year should be easily achievable. I hope that helps! :)

First post, first GB, first potential build!  I'm wondering if there's anything that usually happens in between now and shipping.  Production updates? Anybody sharing build ideas?  Already have the keycaps picked out (Drop MT3 Camillo) and been playing with a switch tester for the better part of a week.  Something about the shorter travel of the ink yellow and the tactility of the ink kangaroo that has me completely torn.  Either way, super excited for what's to come.

Right now there's a holiday in China, so a little bit of a gap before progress is made. Testing a couple more things before we start processing orders. Lots of people sharing build ideas in Discord! I'll be updating the IC and GB thread as things happen :)
