Shame about the Taegu types build stream. Pcb problem I assume? Will this delay the gb?

I don't know if the GB should be postponed or not until I figure out the issues. Most probably not.

It's unfortunate. I'll check the PCB when I have it in my hands. The PCB was not tested by myself but was tested by my collaborator who designed the PCB. He also hand-soldered all the prototype PCBs. I guess some parts were not soldered very well and got loose during the shipping. It shouldn't be a big problem though, as 32u4-based PCBs are pretty straightforward, and we've been making these for years.

BTW, I'm waiting for another prototype part to arrive. If it works as I excepted, I'll make a last-minute change/upgrade for what's been shown so far.

Thatís hard luck so best wishes. Iím hand soldering an Atmega32u4 next week and am not looking forward to it... 40 x tiny pins!

Good looking board though. Iím dead keen still. Really hoping for an iso plate/pcb though.

Would be great to be able to buy tops, middle accents and bottoms separately after you buy your kit so you could for instance get an extra top and middle to swap out without having to buy a whole extra kit for different colour combos. Just a thought...

So freaking excited for this, already having anxiety trying to decide which colours to get

Quick Question:

I came up with this idea just several days ago. I call it the skeleton plate as some Instagram users suggested. I think it's pretty cool.

Now I want to make it the default, maybe the only, plate option. What do you think?

Bro that looks nuts, will this have ISO support also?
i would suggest making no skeleton cuts for flexy plates like polycarb, fr4.
It might make it feel funky.
i'm so ready for the GB

Interested on this, what's the material? How does it feel? And will production PCB have flex cuts?
Would be interested if you do add fr4 and pc option as additional.
Hope I can cop one!

I canít imagine the plate to be sounding / feeling that great. Would really need the common proven materials such as Brass, FR4, Polycarb...

I would be in to try this (default or not).

Have you tried to desolder a switch or two? My only concern would be if it was too easy to damage if you needed to repair a broken switch.

The material of the skeleton plate is aluminum as usual. Iíll test other materials (FR4, brass) as well.
Firstly, itís very strong. Donít be afraid it will be damaged or deformed easily.
Secondly, well, itís not that flexible as I thought. Regular PC plates are much softer. FR4 plates with this design may be different though.
I always hope I can offer something different in my GB that you cannot get from others, even the decisions are risky and not that mainstream. So far I still want to make it default. Convince me why not if you hate it.

For me, the plate can offer extra protection for the pcb against crumbs, pet hair, spills even. So I would choose a plate with more coverage generally. But, I plan on buying extras to have aluminium, fr4, (carbon fibre maybe?!) so hopefully wouldnít affect me. I think with the curved design and plate cutouts shown, you are already offering something different enough for me.

In my opinion, although such a design is very cool, it may not be obvious to improve the feel. Do you consider using flex cut on the PCB?

I've really liked the customization options offered in this IC so far, like the case colour combinations and a choice to have the top-right leaf badge or not.
I'd like to see that customizability extended to the plate choices...rather than have the skeleton plate as the default/only option. You'd still be offering something different if the plate was offered as an extra.

I agree with that... This beautiful board is all about customization. Why would you impose a single plate while everything else is fully customizable?
As for being the default one, you obviously know your stuff and what you are doing, so I you think that this is a good default, I'm all in, and following your advice.

Offering more options is what I always want to achieve.
However, making two types of plates will may make the options unmanageable.
So far, the options are like:

  • 4 top case layouts: with/without logo, with/without WKL blocker
  • 10 top case colors
  • 11 middle frame colors/materials (9 for aluminum, 1 for PC, 1 for PVD brass)
  • 10 bottom case colors
  • 10 weight colors
  • 11 plate colors/materials (9 for aluminum, 1 for FR4, 1 for PVD brass)

If I offer both the regular plate and the skeleton plate, the number of options for plates will be increased from 11 to 22.

I can see the "skeleton" plate being very unique, but I think what others have voiced are also something I can agree. Maybe reduce the amount of the regular aluminum plate options to 4 instead of 9 like you said before, and put in 4 options of your "skeleton" plate. That should solve your issue with having too many options. For me, the color of the plate is not that visible when the keycaps are on top of it, so I wouldn't care that much having a lot of different colors of plate. With your build, I believe the main focus will be the different top, middle, and bottom frame color choices.

I think if you did 11 plate colors/materials (9 for aluminum, 1 for FR4, 1 for PVD brass) for the skeleton plate like you want, then only have one colour option for aluminum, FR4, and brass in the more "standard" plate configuration, (total 3 more options) then the people excited about the skeleton plate will be happy, and if someone wants a plain alu/brass/FR4 plate as an extra they can without you having to add so many additional options.
