[IC] metal keycaps - made by nitwimp
« on: Wed, 15 June 2022, 15:31:02 »
Hello everybody, my name is Brian/nitwimp and I've been making metal keycaps at my shop for a few months. I finally have a solid process established for making Cherry r1 1u caps out of brass and aluminum

Here is a link to a thread I made detailing my process - lots of photos (some of which I'll be using for this IC *there's examples of some I engraved and painted* - go look! ^.^*)
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=117506.0

This IC is about bulk quantities of raw unfinished caps for people to laser engrave/paint/anodize/patina/etc themselves for resale/personal use
*Raw meaning bare metal that has not undergone any work post machining - these caps are a great blank canvas for lots of different finishing procedures*

Brass cap pricing
150$ for 5 caps (30$ each)
250$ for 10 caps (25$ each)

Aluminum cap pricing

200$ for 10 caps (20$ each)
360$ for 20 caps (18$ each)

any requests for larger quantities will have to be assessed individually

This is not a group buy.
Since I make these in house from scratch, I don't see the reason to make a GB.

These caps are made to order

As of right now I can make about 60-80 caps a day

This post seems best suited for the artisan services channel but I am unable to post there. Instead of messaging mods I decided to write up this IC  :D :thumb:

Awesome, they look decent too.  :thumb:
I know I'd be interested. I've got to see if I can find a few other locals who'd be down for some Brass keycaps.
One question, from top to bottom, what's the total height of your Brass caps? I'm curious how they'll stack up against the Topre/Leopold SS2 profile.

I don't have my calipers at my desk right now so i cant get you a hard nosed number but i can offer you some example photos of real life comparison
The plastic cap is from a leopold board - my cap is just slightly (like .005-.01 inch) taller when side by side but are exact same when mounted on a switch ((its literally so close i should of just said they're the exact same height but nothing is perfectly exact ))

That's what I'm looking for, provided of course that Leopold's MX and Topre caps use the same profile. I hope they do anyway.
I'll contact you via Discord chat.

this is a fun idea. Your cost is definitely a little high for anyone thinking "keycap set", but as artisan blanks, this is cool

Definitely not trying to make entire keysets - that would be a little too ambitious for me to handle solo. I have a hard time wrapping my head around all the various 1u 1.25u 1.5u and so on that i would need for each row
