Wheelwriter 10 Series II
« on: Fri, 24 September 2010, 18:51:15 »
Got it for free...well found it beside a building labelled E-Waste :D

:D

Unfortunately the ribbon was ripped, so I had to do some surgery.

But in the end, no problems.

Neato

Nice keys

And if you hadn't realized:

Buckling Spring :D With single piece caps, I might add.

Only 2 rivets missing, pretty good, for probably being dropped (it's pretty heavy).

Technically, I could read all the stuff people before me typed, but that would be a pain, as there's no spaces...

No ground...

Best part, the power switch :D

More pics on picasa.

Haha, yeah. It's big and heavy, so trying to get a good shot is difficult :P.

Yummy, battery leakage. (Or is it?) Thankfully those are alkalines at least.

I hope getting the cracked case fixed wasn't too much of a problem? I once had a similar problem on a radio, got it glued for the most part but it resisted pretty heavily.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Yeah, definitely battery leakage. I'll fix that part once I feel the need to save margins, and settings :P. Currently I've just unplugged the battery unit.

The crack seems very fixable (glue), as it's not really a big structural piece (only covers the keyboard portion). Picking up the whole unit, there's a big metal plate on the bottom.

Why does the Wheelwriter need a battery inside it? Does it have a BIOS? :P

These must have been pre-rubber washers on the barrels. It also looks like a Model F conversion.

The battery is for saving settings such as the margins, spellcheck, etc.

If I was only that lucky, HaaTa.  That said, my purpose for such a dumpstered typewriter would be to rip out the keyboard casing.

Wheelwriter 3 problem.  Typewriter ribbon does not move when keys are struck.  Correcting ribbon moves when correction key is struck.  Odd thing, I have two wheelwriters (one stored as a backup).  Both have the same problem.  When the "in use" one failed, plugged in the other, and it had the same problem.  Huh?  What are the likely causes of a ribbon motion problem?  Both are about the same age (1990's), is there a "life" issue with some part?
