New Filco - How to remove keycap without tool?
« on: Sat, 16 October 2010, 14:00:23 »
Just got my FILCO Tactile Touch, and I wanted to put in the red esc key. How do I remove a key without damaging the keyboard? I have some various household tools but not the key-removing tool offered on the elitekeyboards website.

Thanks ^_^

These are super easy to remove.  Don't worry, you're not going to break anything.  Just loop some dental floss under the corner of the key and pull up.  It will pop right off.

The trick is to find a way to pull it straight up and not twist or pry at it. Hooking a bent paperclip under two corners works well.
You can call me... Keyboard Otaku... or not quite...

There's only one safe way to remove Alps key caps:

  • Stand about five feet away from the desk.
  • Hold the keyboard at one end.
  • Raise it above and behind your head.
  • With all your might, swing the keyboard forward so the far end of it hits the edge of the desk.
  • The keyboard will stop, and momentum will cause the key caps to keep moving and fly off all at once.
  • Your switches and key caps will be intact. The rest of the keyboard on the other hand may suffer from the experience.

These were Simplifieds (Fukkas).

Looks like they are all "Simplified" by the time you are finished with them!

My next mission is to find a program that will allow me to make simple macros for things like increasing/decreasing volume,  pause/play music etc.

Any program fit that description that doesn't need to be ran on boot? Or is that impossible?

AutoHotkey.  Check the "Turn Any Keyboard Into A HHKB" mod for a Media Script - make sure you put into XP compatibility mode.

Stupid Win7 is forcing me to elevate privileges every time I run AHK - anybody here know a workaround (other than completely turning off UAC).
Does AHK start as a service or a shortcut in your startup folder? If it is the latter you can adjust the properties of the shortcut to "run as admin".
