One issue with supporting bigger boards is the Shift legends needed don't exist above 1.75u, and would have to be made new; we're aiming for zero new legend plates (asides from the 40% Discord key, which will be used across future sets). Line Feed doesn't exist in 2.25u either, according to SP.
We've gone back and forth with them, having them research numerous ideas for potential terminal-themed Shift and Enter legends. And while they have a ton of Shift alternatives for 40's-sized keys, none existed in sizes larger than 1.75u.
We had them look up pretty much every variation of CR, Car Ret, Carriage Return, and Line Feed. Line Feed itself was the only one to come in all sizes between 1u and 1.75u, and none of them came any bigger. There have just been a lot of private 40s runs over the years that have padded out legend availability in smaller sizes.
Another issue is that a monokit is appealing to vendors who don't want to worry about a child kit hitting MOQ, or being orphaned when the base sells out. Yes, there could be two full bases - 40% and 100% - but the market isn't what it was back when sets with two bases could succeed. Both SA Maestro bases are still in stock, heavily discounted, today; that's a 2021 set. There have been GMK sets with two bases, but SP's numbers have never been anywhere near those of GMK. SA is niche, and SA R3 is even nicher.
The lead vendor on this is a 40%-specific shop, and isn't likely to get a lot of traffic from people with larger boards. When I drew up a full version of the kitting that could cover 100% boards several months ago, vendors balked at the weird legends, and weren't interested in carrying it. All I heard, even if I stuck to existing legends, was that full-size board owners wouldn't buy sets with nonstandard legends, and vendors didn't want to risk it. It was only when I cut it back to 40's-oriented that it got any vendors or support behind it.
So this is likely pretty to remain a small run, 40s/ortho exclusive. And that's okay. I appreciate the love this set is receiving, and I'm sorry that folks with larger boards are getting left out this time around. I do have other sets coming up with broad, inclusive kitting, albeit with more standard legends that vendors won't be spooked by.
