Hak Foo makes a decent point, but it appears there are SEVERAL geekhackers that have purchased these units with the purpose of rebuilding / retrofitting / or just upgrading to best specs for the form factor, myself included. I
personally *hate* laptops / notebooks, and have even bugged others with my many rants about what a crap platform it is.
Luggable PCs are a much more viable option now than when these were built, with the newer small mainboards, lower power requirements, wireless nics, and great data storage options. One can easily shave quite a bit of weight from one of these units, and make it perform on par with modern desktops or laptops in a much more pleasing and usable layout.
My plans are to max mine out as best I can afford (some custom fab *might* be needed, depends on the route I take). The only real issue I've come up against is space for expansion cards, and with external wifi adapters and possible a case mod I should be able to deal with it quite elegantly, but for now I save $$$ for the build
