$29.99 Win 7 Pro (Student Discount)
« on: Sun, 03 April 2011, 21:25:02 »
I'm back! Just did a clean install to Win 7 64bit using this upgrade version.

Finally dropped in price again so I jumped on it. (Was $65)

I wish my community college gave my wife an email ending in .edu.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

Question...will this work to upgrade my current torrent-authenticated version of 7 Pro? Or am I just wasting my money? My PCs been running fine since Oct with this version.

This is an upgrade version (not a full version) I assume?

I was looking at their office 2010 package. WTF they charge 10 bucks for the language package separately. :(

While this is an upgrade version of Windows, you can actually do a full clean install by doing a custom installation, skipping the product key entry, and declining to authenticate automatically upon startup.  Once you're running Win 7, you can then apply the product key by right-clicking on "Computer" in the start menu and selecting Properties. then scroll to the bottom of that window, enter your product key and activate Windows.

By the way, when you purchase, you're given the option of downloading an iso to burn your own installation disc, so save the $14 or whatever they want to charge for a physical disc.

Step-by-step:
copy/pasted from http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/10/27/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-and-product-key-on-formatted-or-empty-blank-hard-drive/
  • Boot up the PC with the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD disc media into DVD-ROM drive. Note: May need to change boot sequence or boot order of device in BIOS, and/or press any key to boot from CD/DVD drive.
  • Follow the Windows 7 Install Wizard to install the operating system on the blank, empty and clean system.
  • During installation, when prompted for a product key, DO NOT enter the upgrade version product key. Tip: This step is to prevent “Invalid Product Key” error. User can  try to input the serial number to check if setup accepts the key. If  it’s accepted, all the rest of steps can be skipped.
  • Unselect and untick the Automatically activate Windows when I’m online check box during the installation process.
  • After Windows 7 is installed, boot up to desktop, and manually enter the Windows 7 upgrade product key to activate online or activate via phone.

Yeah, sucks they charge $10 separately for the language packs but I  think
it's still a pretty good price for office right?  I've decided to  stick with Office 2007 for now.

I've utilized clean installing from upgrade media for both Vista and now Win 7.  Works great!

if you were thinking of trying this just because you have an .edu email address, beware. the fine print says they can (and likely will) verify your course enrollment at random.

Seriously, they don't even do anything effective to stop all the cracks, even though they technically could ..
Thing is, the value of a 90% market-share is  greater than the value of only having paying users .. And these 'student-users' are at least taking the trouble of paying something, instead of just downloading the latest loader off bit-torrent ..

But if you need a genuine windows7, this is a cheap way to get it..

You do realize how difficult that would be right? Stopping you from having bought their stuff cheaper isn't worth the effort to actually check enrollment.

Regardless, any potential buyer who ISN'T actively enrolled should probably read this.

And? The fact that they use enrollment to attempt to deter staff with .edu address' doesn't actually stop them from getting it, nor will they try. I am an active student, and me and plenty of people I know (at my pestering) got boxed professional copies the first time round, when you could just call microsoft store and do it that way instead (who knows, they still might be doing it). Point is, absolutely nobody ever heard from them again after getting their copies.

"Microsoft or an appointed vendor may contact you to verify that you are a current student. If documentation is not provided indicating that you are a current student, you will be liable to reimburse Microsoft for the difference between what you paid and the estimated retail price of the software."

It's all about the individual's personal risk tolerance. Nothing more, nothing less.

Friends, friends, all your problems can be solved,
Just go to your command prompt (known to non noobs as terminal) and type 'format C:\'. all your problems will disappear in a few minutes.

Seriously, get Ubuntu, 11.04 comes out at the end of the month!!!

Does it run newest games natively?

Also, don't feel like fighting with Wine...

Whine is crap!

There are tons of games for Linux which can be installed by package manager (ie natively!). If a game does not exist, modify an existing game or write one from scratch!

All for free!

Invest your money in Hardware:
Buy keyboards and keycaps!

I don't think I like the "unity" interface that they have decided is the main interface for any copy of ubuntu. I may install 10.04 instead because its the LTS release.
