HHKB Pro HG / Pro HG Japan
« on: Wed, 01 June 2011, 10:33:05 »

Curious- Has anyone out there ever used, or even seen, the HHKB Pro HG Japan or the Pro HG? the Japan was the 10th anniversary edition HHKB with enamel coated keys. It was super limited edition and every expensive. There was also the Pro HG, which didn't have the enamel but had an aluminum case. That was about half the price, putting it at around 1600 euros!

Always been curious about these so I figured I'd ask...

I like the aluminum frame with adjustable stand one.  These are old though.  They've been out a while ago.

i am resurrecting this insanely old thread.

has anyone ever seen one of these in the wild or got to actually type on one?  the case is freaking amazing.

also i think this is the most expensive keyboard ever produced.

Unobtainable, unless you are ready to throw at least double of retail (around $4500+ at time of sale). Anyone who owns one of these, and only 100 were ever made, probably understands the value pretty well.

I doubt there are even a handful outside of japan. Those Urushi laquer keys are pretty sweet though. Feel like we could DIY something comparable, albeit without the gold dust. ;)

Umm, well, I'm gonna need that gold dust on mine.  So add that into your DIY project.  :p

To make it our own, we can just sprinkle angel dust instead of gold dust :)

is their a GH or KBD like group in Japan?

Even after lurking on this and other sites over time I've never seen it brought up (edit: I do remember the lacquered version I think, but didn't see the back). Must be terribly hard to find.

There was a link on a guy who made his own aluminum case for his HHKB. Though the photos show that it was half done (there were no ports for instance so there is no way for that HHKB to be able to communicate.

I wonder has that project finally finished? it doesn't look anywhere as nice as the HG series but at least someone did have a go at making one up for themselves.

That GH member could potentially be Bunny Lake. He's waiting for his end game keyboard and the speculation is that he's getting the HG.

Well, it seems pretty kewl, and I would really like to feel what those leather keycaps are like.  I think it would be either totally awesome or totally horrible.  I doubt it would feel like "meh".  Also, it would have to be microbial treated leather or it would get super stinky super quick, like an old leather watch band, which if you ever experienced that smell is pretty nasty.  And no more eating a philly cheese steak while sitting at your computer perusing geekhack.org, 'cuz your cheesesteak grease is gonna ruin those leather keycaps.

We can get an IC together for a run? Last time one was done, the cost was estimated to be around $350 per case though. Id gladly shell that out for one.

$350 isn't as bad as I would have thought if the quality is good but I don't think we would be able to find enough people to make it viable.

I like it!

THe extra bit with the feet seems a bit odd, but you wouldn't really see that from a normal typing position anyway.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It seems that the shipping is limited to Japan, anyone considering this would have to consider a forwarding service too.
