Keyboards of SC2 Pros!
« on: Mon, 06 June 2011, 08:54:13 »
Hey guys,

Just got back from MLG Columbus, it was awesome. Some of you may have even seen me on the live stream - we were all screwing around :D

Anyhow, I got a chance to go into the booth of the pros as we were in the VIP section and saw that the legendary 'suicide toss', MC, uses a full-size Topre RealForce keyboard! I obviously wasn't allowed to touch anything so I can't tell you what exact switches were used (variable, 55g etc).

I did see a few open bracket competitors using the Steelseries keyboards w/ the MX Blacks...

So yeah - if you guys got a chance to spot some keyboards of the pros list them up here! :)

Damn, now I won't be getting the same keyboard as my favorite player =( (Topre is a bit pricey...)
Extensive research has found your statement to be of inferior quality.  Please revise it.

I remember from one of DJwheat's pod casts that he uses this at home.  I am pretty sure that team liquid struck a deal with razer for sponsorship but i didnt see if they were using the blackwidow.  I remember someone was using this ghetto keyboard.  But sadly enough a topre is about $245 at elitekeyboards.com i wish i could just try one out.

That explains why he game away his old qsenn in the audience a while back. I thought he'd just get another qsenn, but I guess winning 2 championships worth ~80000$ each is reason enough to get a realforce.

I say whatever that doesn't strain your fingers after prolong period of hotkey spamming is a good and even a pro keyboard for sc2. Look at what korean pros used to use back in the sc days. Samsung DT35.

I don't think they cared much about strain. They just got reasonably priced keyboards and went with it. Korea being very hype oriented made it a phenomenon and the western nerds copy whatever the Korean pro's use/do.

Forgot to mention that a few open bracket guys used Filco Tenkeyless

JulyZerg used a Zowie Celeritas; with nearly all the keycaps swapped for red ones. (I'll post a pic up when I get home)

I got a great shot of Moon playing too and his keyboard... which I later identified as the classic Samsung DT35 mentioned earlier!

Day [9] said during the games that the players seemed to prefer smaller keyboards but I didn't really see that with most people. A lot of the non-Korean players used the Razer keyboards (NaNiwa is actually left handed and uses his right hand on the keyboard, looks very awkward).

I was one of those open bracket players sporting the Filco Tenkeyless (Brown switches). My other teammate that was there sports a das pro. We also have a deck user and a black widow user on the team.

I use a das silent at work (software developer).

The tenkeyless is amazing for starcraft. I prefer the small form factor as your hands are closer together. It is also much easier to travel with.

As for the dt35 the Korean pros used them because they were good and cheap. Pro houses used to keep shelves of those things because players would burn through them so often.  I have been through a few keyboards in my day and I am hoping the mechanicals have more longevity (solid year on the FILCO with no complaints).

Ripster, Moon is sponsored by Razer but he was using his Samsung keyboard - I don't even think he was using anything Razer besides the mousepad haha.

Also - I meant NaNiwa put his hand in the left side of the keyboard, with his right hand. He uses his left hand for the mouse as he is left handed.

I love what Hot_bid says about her, being with Idra only for the green card, on both of their faces xDDD

Going back to the topic...

I was also looking forward for a thread like this. I always wanted to know which keyboard AND mouse do pro SC2 players use.
too bad I don't know much about others keyboards.

I know Day[9] uses a razer mice, just forgot about the name of it, but its the green leds one (cooperhead I think) that has 1800 dpi at most.
Also, qxc uses the same Dell sk-8115 many others do too.
To be honest, the only gamer I really admire and like truly is Day[9], he is such a baller!

using Xai as well , not realy for sc but tbh i find it lacking , main problem is that it has a very sensitive laser (if i can phrase it like that)  the smallest lint or eyelash get in there and you need to stop playing and clean it as you cant use it , this didnt happen with my old logitech laser mouse

Yep, that's a white Qsenn DT-35. Good keyboard for a ruber dome, and dirt cheap in Korea. ($10~) but you'll wear through them pretty fast. I've only had mine since the end of Febuary and the keys have already developed a mushy feel to them instead of a nice punchy feel that they had when the domes were new. (Whatpulse has recorded that I've done 3.9 million keystrokes since Febuary). I've just got my first mechanical keyboard on its way now.

i went from a logtiech mini optical -> XAI -> G9x. I like the G9x a lot better (with textured grip). It is more comfortable and more precise for me than the Xai.

Also QXC was using a black widow with a bunch of keys removed at MLG. I know he used to use the dell but he wasnt this time. Probably sponsor related.

I'm totally going to have a look at which mouse pro's use since my naga stopped working properly on the left click, after 8 months of use on not so heavy use. I wonder if I can just replace the switch of it instead of getting a new one...

I can't play sc2 without the naga.  The side buttons are so useful.  However tracking with the philips TE does have it's problems.
