Thinking of buying a Filco Ninja Majestouch-2...
« on: Sun, 12 June 2011, 18:24:00 »
Hello all,

I'm new to the forums, but have been lurking for a little while now.  I purchased a Das keyboard (cherry brown) and got it in a few days ago.  The keys are already starting to show wear and it's a pet peeve of mine.  The glossy finish looks nice, but I find myself wiping it off constantly which can get a little bit irritating at times.

So I'm debating now between exchanging it for the ultimate version, or buying the Filco Ninja (104 layout).

I've read on the forums about some ping noises coming from the filco and that so far is the only thing that has got my attention.  The other thing is that since it's going to be purchased overseas, there isn't really going to be any "warranty" for it if it comes with some dead microswitches or other issues.

The reason I'm so attracted to the Ninja isn't just because of the e-peen, it's because I really love the front labeled keys, because like I stated before, I'm have a pet peeve with worn down letters on keys.

The other thing I read is that filco keycaps have a tendency to get imprinted by finger nails?  I just need some clarification on all of this if someone wouldn't mind replying to this thread.

I hope you guys can help me make my decision.

Thanks a lot!

Why not buy some engraved PBT and not worry about wear?

Also I used to have a Das that pinged, it's not like only Filcos show signs of it.

Cherry MX switches are made of metal, and they sometimes consonate when you bottom up or type fast. You are the PING composer.

Filco brown is recommended. For wear, glossy and tear, you can always buy a keycap set.

Because it would be more convenient and cost effective for me to just buy the filco for 159.99 rather than to supplement my current das with engraved.

I actually don't mind the shining type of wear at all.  What I do mind is the letters fading and making the keys look out of place.

Also, I see the Filco's come USB, do they include a usb to ps2 adapter?

I was searching on google and found that Filco keys have coating that wear off and end up looking hideous http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/797880-edit-filco-tenkeyless-vs-das-ultimate-3.html#post10321622

I know Filco probably uses that coating to protect the pad print, do any of you know if that's still present on the Ninja keycaps?

Yeah?  I see that you also have a Das.  What is your opinion of how they stack up against each other

Like I said, I am still debating between getting the ninja or just exchanging my professional model for the ultimate.

Well, aside from the shiny key issue (all of the keys in the alpha cluster of my Das are practically mirror-finished), the quality is comparable. I personally feel the Filcos have a slight edge on quality, but it's very slight. I also prefer more rectangular keyboards, so the bump on the DK to accomodate the USB port kinda irks me, but then again, it's a USB port. So that kinda makes up for it.

As far as the keys getting shiny, I've noticed that they both (meaning Filco and Das Keyboard) will start to get shiny after a few weeks of use. I'm on my keyboard all the freakin time, so YMMV. Apparently if you want to minimize the shininess issue, you should get a set of PBT replacement keycaps. I'm still waiting on mine, so I can't comment on whether that's true or not. One thing I will say though is that I've noticed that my red board's caps wear significantly slower than my blue board did or my brown board is. It may have something to do with the lightness of the switch and that I'm not pressing down on the cap as hard.

As far as noise goes, I don't have any pinging issues with my boards, except for my left control key on my brown tenkeyless, and even then I have to concentrate to hear it.

Overall, both boards are built like tanks. You can't go wrong with either one. But I can guarantee this: You'll want another one soon :)

If the keys were not shiny after months of use, how keycaps could be sold? No good for economy.

I have a Ninja, but haven't suffered any pinging.  I don't doubt the people that say they do...luck of the draw I guess.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, though.  While I agree it shouldn't happen on a keyboard that costs this much, Amazon is good about returns and exchanges.  I can't help you with the shiny key problem, though.  I can tell you that it is awesome to type on, once you get used to it.

Oh, and while the Ninja probably does have e-peen associated, I couldn't really care less.  I just didn't want my letters wearing off and figured $10 made that worth it.  I almost didn't even get that because I didn't want to pay extra for special keys and what not, but in the end it was only $10 and may make it easier to resell someday.

I'm just wondering if I should go with the tenkeyless version or the standard size.  I don't use the numpad that much outside of calculator or excel work, but I already graduated so I don't use it much anymore.  The novelty of these mini-keyboards is intriguing me though.

Can one of you guys break the Ninja secrecy code, pull a key, put it under bright light, and see if it looks like this?

You are looking for water spot like marks which indicate the key has been coated.

I'll take a look when I switch out my Windows keys.  For now I have to go to bed, I have work in the morning.  Oh and I just noticed I do have some ping on my quotation mark key.  Its certainly not bad enough that I would return the board, but its there :(  That's the only key I've found though.

Why wouldn't the Ninja be coated though? I'd imagine that the entire keycap would be coated regardless of the fact that only the sides are printed. Isn't this the case with regular majestouches?

I'll dissent, I got the 104 because it's just a bigger keyboard.  More ninja keys, maximum pleasure.  I'm using mine at work, too, so the Ninja must be 104 for the data entry.

I believe with a 104 key your cost per switch is lower.

Or you could always buy a separate keypad if you enjoy filling up slots on your USB hub.

...Although right now these Ducky/KBC PBT laser engraved keys are proving amazingly resistant to shining up.

I'd have to say this $35 set is beating the Topre $275 keys ($78 for replacement set) at two months of wear.  And a lot less prone to wear than ABS Double Shots.  Mine are real shiny and building a complete keyboard from Cherry Corp donor boards is no easy task.

You want to say the PBT's from imsto have better wear resistance than doubleshots?

Yes.

Pretty apparent already.  After two months I was starting up a pretty good shine on Cherry Corp doubleshots.  Right now I can see a VERY slight shine on my spacebar on my KBC/Ducky PBTs.

I haven't tried my Signature Plastic ones on a keyboard yet.

Just have it setup at work, typing on it now.  If I put my ear right next to the keyboard, I can hear it pings when the key bottoms out.  Maybe it is coming from the plate.  On a few keys (not all), you can hear the spring does its springie sound when you release the cap.

But typing with your ears next to the keyboard is very bad for your back and you can't see the screen.  So I don't do that.  When I type with my normal sitting position, I only hear the keys bottoms out, which is perfect.
