Concerns with my Leo
« on: Wed, 29 June 2011, 11:02:15 »
I've been using my Leopold tenkeyless with MX browns for about a month now.

Initially I loved but after using it for a while i have a couple gripes I'd like to share.

First off I have to say I don't like the stabilizers compared to my Black Widow. I find they are to tough and a bit mushy. I'm not sure why they used the stabilizers they did, but I don't like em, I think a simple stabilizer would have been a lot better since I feel the Leo's ruin the original feel of the browns. This brings me to gripe number 2. I find the browns tactile feel very minimal, almost unnoticeable. To me its more like a light version of blacks (I've never tried red so I can't say). Also the switch is not at all smooth, This has nothing to do with tactility, what I mean is... well its hard to explain. I can only say that rather than smooth all the way down, it tends to stick a few times on the way down, this is only when I purposely do a slow press, and it is for every key. I should note the slower I try to press the key the stickier it seems. I'm not sure if this is to be expected, but I've never had this issue with a dome.

Anyway I thought I'd share my thoughts after using the leo for a while. All that said, I still love the board, for its rock solid feel, but after trying Blue, Black and Brown cherries, I can't help but feel they aren't the best quality switches, they're rock solid and have a decent feel, but the fit and finish just isn't there. I hope my ideas will be confirmed after my roommates torpe comes in.

While it doesn't bother me greatly Cherry Corp stabilizer does make those keys feel wildly different on the Leopold with browns. Both my other keyboards (g80-3000, Poker) also use them but with blacks, and reds which are both fine since the switch is already linear. As far as the tactility, I think its from the plate. Plates seem to deaden the keyfeel over pcb mount. On the travel, on mine I only notice where it sticks 1 time on the tactile bump and is otherwise nice and smooth to me. But I also only notice the bump when press the key ridiculously slow. On normal typing speed its like it's not even there and I bottom out all the time. Of course there wouldn't be that on a rubberdomes, as they have no tactile point to cause it.
Overall though I really like my Leopold, though it got demoted to my htpc keyboard since my Poker arrived. The g80-3000 is now in the closet until my friend picks it up.

You could try lubing the Leo stabilizers and see if that smooths out the feel?

Since I learned to touch type, browns are great. Before, they were too light.

RSI prevention recipe:[/B] Kinesis Contoured, Colemak layout, touch typing, Contour Design Rollermouse,  Logitech TrackMan Wheel, Logitech m570 trackball, "workrave" break timer software, "awesome" window manager, tenkeyless boards, cherry browns, Wang 724 with "ghetto green" ALPS, standing desk and/or comfy adjustable chairs, stress reduction, computer time reduction.

Fun non-ergonomic things: bolt modded Model M Space Saving Keyboards with new springs, Kensington Expert Mouse v7, Unicomp Endurapro, Northgates

Hi, I was interested in buying leo blues as they are restocking on EK, but I'm worried about this as well. I currently have 6gv2(uses blacks) and I really don't like the blacks because of how stiff they are. Can anyone confirm if the blue switches are anywhere near like the blacks on the leo's? Thanks.

I love my Leo Tenkeyless with browns and prefer it over my buddy's Filco. I personally like the Cherry Corp stabilizes. I feel that they give a more even press.

And as for blues being like black? Nowhere even close. Tactile and clicky vs linear and silent.

Browns feel very light to me on my Leopold. I Imagine the blues to have a similar feel since they use the same spring tension. In my opinion they feel about half as heavy as a black switch on my Cherry g80-3000.

yes, one person says tomato, one tomoughto. Different people may have a different perception of the key feeling. Plate mounting can make a switch feel stiffer also, just due to the fact there is less board flex than on a pcb mounted keyboard. Depends on what they were coming from or comparing it with. I would definitely recommend the Leopold, they are very nice keyboards.

Have you tried Black switches and do you know how they feel like?

The Deck Legend blacks are as smooth as they could be. However, they do take more force to depress. They are great for my big heavy-handed typing. My G80-3000 blues are very light in comparison (and very clicky).

Perhaps this indicated that yes, I own a keyboard with a black switch?
