[taking orders!] Double shot replacements ROUND FOUR!
« Reply #3150 on: Fri, 27 January 2012, 02:07:33 »
Ok, some questions from the wiki...

1. BLANKALNUM - Blank A-Z keys - 50 keys
: So, is this supposed to consist of ..
     A to Z, punctuations, numbers(~,1,2,3,....9,0,-,=)    ?
The total is still 46. How do we come up with 50 keys?

2. BLANKMOD kit
: In the graphical explanation, the blank backspace should be row1(2 units) instead of row2(2 units), right?

Just trying to confirm these before ordering more blanks...

46+2 without nubs and 2 for ISO layout (rows 3 and 4)==50.

:-)

I've corrected the row for Backspace. I will upload the graphic as soon as possible.
Did the same for BLANKMOD125 and BLANKMOD150 .

Is anyone else spending more on these keycaps than they did on their board in the first place, or is that just me?

The keyboards are so cheap these days because the manufacturers put super-low-quality keycaps on them. It is like with cheap printers where the toner cartridge costs more than a new printer.

Or compeare this to cameras, where the camara costs $1,000 and the lenses $20,000!!!

There even exist keyboards which come without any key caps (like the Phantom for example)!

Yeah well after I get my double shots, and a set of topre keycaps, I have to quit geekhack, because I can't spend another penny on keyboards for the rest of my life.

Also also, 7bit. Your bot doesn't seem to recognize RETRO/STANDARD/ORANGE. I don't if that was on purpose or not, but it wasn't in the confirmation email I got, so I sent another message to add it, and got no second email. Might explain why "very few people bought that set"

I know the price list on the wiki is old.

I ordered a moogle kit. Listed for $25 on price list, bot says $50. Which is closer to reality?

Any chance we can get this on a key cap (dye sublimation)?

Yes, copyright law in the USA is *insane*.  Along with my letters to congressidiots decrying SOPA/PIPA, I proposed that they completely revamp the copyright law to protect actual creative people, and stop handing over all creative rights to corporations in perpetuity.  I'm sure that was filed 13 immediately.

WASDkeyboards.com will custom laser keys for around $10 ( http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/individual-custom-keycaps/custom-keycap.html ).  The more I read about Signature Plastics, the less good I feel about blowing huge wads of money on them.  I do want some nice two-shot insert molded keys.... x-fingers.

x2 - though, I discovered that my entire network had been knocked out by my ISP, so that could also explain the lack of email.  I'll ping 7bit_R4 again and see if he responds.

Yeah, I realized that after I mentioned it.  Dye-sublimation is your best bet.  I haven't quite figured out all the ins & outs of keycaps yet, but I seem to recall coming across a place that will do custom dyesubs... it's probably in ripster's sig-linked world of wikis.  ;-)

PS: I am *still* not receiving email from 7bit_R4 bot.  The last time I heard a peep was late December, and that was from 7bit himself, not the bot... so, actually, I have *never* heard a peep from the bot.  I'm certain my network is up and functional, as the spam flood is ticking away merrily, as usual.  Bot, oh bot, wherefore hast thou forsaken me?!  :-(

I thought 7-bit said that it was a manual script execution by 7-bit himself when he can get around to it, not a bot.  I WISH it were a bot.  I'd really like to see it respond immediately instead of days between.  But, nevertheless, I do appreciate 7-bit's efforts.

P.S. How does a guy get permission to use a signature around here?

Dye-sublimation in China (ask imsto). You can't say anything in China and everything is censored but there id total freedom when it comes to copiing things!

I think it is a language issue: the term 'copyright' had been translated falsely, so they copy all they can!

The wiki says that the vim key is available in any style. The price list and the script seem to indicate otherwise. Is vimcaps only available in the styles indicated on the price list page?

From my experience, in cases like this, the price list is more accurate.
In the wiki there are a couple of options left over that are no longer valid.

I was in China in 1996.  It was a lot like the USA in the 1970s, only with a LOT more slums, and a disturbing lack of sanitation.  I did get the feeling that some of the "friends" I made there were really spies, wondering, "WTF is this round-eye doing in CHINA?!?"  Anyway, no one freaked out about openly talking; no one acted horribly opressed; no one seemed censored.... Hell, the government there couldn't even be bothered to crack down on the petty crooks swarming every public place; I doubt they could really enact much censorship over their billions of citizens.

Another interesting note: we just sold a video game to a Chinese company, and they were adamant about ensuring that all copyrights were licensed properly, way more than any USA company I've dealt with, outside of movie production clearances.  So, I think all this noise about Chinese piracy and lack of copyright concern is way overblown and jingoistic in it's disingenuousness.  On the other hand, Guangchow is the only place I have seen open markets selling commercially pirated software (i.e. MicroS**t *boxes* with fake holograms!)  Then again, I don't spend much time in the USA flea markets these days, but I suspect some of the same things go on there.  hehe.

7bit: thanks!  I did finally get email from your bot.  I think I need to cull my list.  $700 for keycaps?!?!  :-o

Is RETRO/MODSYM125 going to look similar to this or will the legends be filled in similar to the original wiki image?

After seeing the retro keys in the SP grab bags I want a set of the dark grey modifier keys with symbols, i.e. modifiers, shifts, control/caps lock, enter, tab and backspace. Is this possible or do I need to order a full TKL or STD set that includes these keys to get them?

Sorry, but I'm not paying $90+ for some doubleshots. I will run my own group buy in a few weeks or so at the $65 for 25 sets or $47 for 50 sets if we get enough buyers. I'll leave my preorder in just in case you manage to bring the price back down, but I highly doubt that will happen nor do I expect that this will ever end. Anyone interested in paying reasonable prices I encourage to look for that.

Also, while I am certainly not interested in collecting the money for you, I do have something to say about it- You're going to need to offer some sort of shared profit if you expect someone to be willing to do it. Collecting the money is a significant portion of the work, and not everyone here can do it, so if you actually expect someone to just go and do it for free then this will truly never end.

I'm going to have to back out of this. Spending the same price on caps as I did on the board doesn't sit well with me.

Alright, sad to say but I am going to have to back out of this as well... Too many changes too many options that get dropped over and over, prices still going up. Sorry for wasting time of anybody that has helped with this. You should have only had a few options from the start not keep adding options that are not even going to be available to order. I won't pay $90 for a TKL double shot kit, $70 was already pushing it beyond my limits.

I'm hoping you realize by now that high prices don't please anyone.

Dave

Are you able to do a GB from SP and get caps at those prices?

What is the reason for the prices in this GB to keep going up. Doesn't SP quote a price at the beginning.

Yeah, 7Bit.

115 for the retro kit hurts too much. I'll stay in until money needs to be collected, but I'm probably gonna bail at some point.

Sorry
I scored a goal in hockey tonight (first one for the team this season). It was in your name and I drank to it.

Yeah in sticking with a retro set till the end, then I'm going to decide if it's worth it or not.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

What is the reason for the prices in this GB to keep going up. Doesn't SP quote a price at the beginning.

The prices keep going up because he doesn't have enough quantity to put in an order of any significant amount for any keyset. Because they are less than the minimum order size quoted, usually 25, the price per set keeps going up because it costs a lot more for a single or handful of sets than it does for 25- setup costs are huge when you're doing such low quantities of several different sets.

Yes I am able to do a group buy from SP for those prices. I had already been quoted that when I made my original interest check thread that is now on like the 2nd or 3rd page of the group buy section, see that thread for more info.
