Filco worth it over the das?
« on: Sun, 31 July 2011, 13:16:03 »
The Das would be 182$ with instant shipping, while the filco would be 200$ and having to wait 10days :(

Where do you live that the Das is so expensive? Is that from the Das site? Have you checked ebay prices?

Theres also the blackwidow ofcourse but the prices of the 2 versions are high also

blackwidow ultimate 180$ for the lowest price possible with shipping
blackwidow 117$ for the lowest price possible with shipping

And I doubt neither of these will meet my demands

Sounds like considering the price of the two, that the Filco is the better deal. 18% dollars ain't much, and case of the Filco>Das is very nice.

Speaking of cases the Filco has the smallest case. 440mm for the fullsize.

Always.

You ever wonder why?

Why? I would get the tenkeyless as I like smaller keyboards. I just need to make sure its worth it over the das and razers which are the only ones available in my layout. I'm not including the qpad as its even more expensive than the filco so that leaves it out

Filco with a doubt.

After owning Steelseries, Ducky, Noppoo, Razer, Cherry and Filco.
It's Filco first and Cherry second. The rest are like el-cheapo knock-offs.

The Das build quality is pretty similar to the black widow.  If you're stuck between those two choices and DON'T like the blackwidow I'd go for the filco dude.

I must dissent.  I have a das (browns) and tried the filco 2 (also browns) and found the das to be superior in nearly every way.  The filco was a bit of a disappointment given its hype.  Some of the letter keys felt strangely scratchy, as if the board had sand in it.  And one of the shift keys felt decidedly unstable.  The das, on the other hand, has more of a selectric sturdiness to it.  But perhaps I'm sentimental because it was my first.

I've owned both as well, New model DAS and new Filco, and the DAS pales very much in comparison.

First of all the glossy look is awful, and it scratches with ease, looks there's no comparison.

Usability, it almost feels like a different switch. The Das isn't anywhere near the quality of the Filco in terms of typing I found, it just wasn't as good of a feel.

I'm very surprised you would place Cherry as second.  My impression from many reviews is that the Cherrys are not of the highest quality.

I'd be interested to hear how the Cherry stacks up against the PLU G3000 NKRO and Leopolds.

Yeah, other than maybe the key caps (which I anyway immediately replaced with some group buy 3 double shots) my Cherry G80-3494 wasn't impressive at all when it came to quality.

from my experience: Filco >>> 6Gv2 > BlackWidow / G80-3494

My Filco just feels incredibly solid, and since I've replaced the key caps I've removed its one glaring weakness, of which the stock key caps were already better than those on my other keyboards

The 6Gv2's downfall is very lousy key caps.  The lettering is above average and won't wear off easily (laser + infill) but will stain easy and several keys don't fit nearly as snug as the keys on any of the other boards (some feel like they could fall out if I turned the keyboard over and lightly tapped on the back).  Whats more is that the caps aren't easily replaced when considering the non standard key layout (giant enter key, etc) and a few dual function F keys as media keys

BlackWidow's downfall is that it just looks and feels cheaper (mostly in the key caps and front casing) than the other boards (although at least its plate mounted) and again the unique key layout makes replacing them tricky.

My G80-3494 feels really good overall when just typing on it, I'm not heavy handed enough to notice or care about flexing due to PCB mounting but just picking it up and handling the board it just screams of cheapness.

Cherry are high quality keyboard but feel flimsy due the lack of the metal plate. Others may beg to differ so take it with a pinch of salt.

Do you think it's fair to compare a plate mounted keyboard with one that isn't?

6Gv2 is basicly a overly-cheapen version of the Filco since they came from the same OEM. It lacks legs and a more mainstream layout. Many have problem finding replacement for the BIGASS enter key.
Blackwidow is still decent, at least it's QC beats Ducky or rather" F^cky" or "Sucky", You choose.

If Cherry is that bad, why are they so many older model still on ebay?

Isn't that kind of the point?  I'd be far less confident in my Cherry board surviving a bad fall, say down a flight of stairs during a move.  Perhaps I should have emphasized a point along the lines of ''just because my G80-3494 feels cheap when I handle it doesn't mean it is cheap or will break under normal use''.  I did say it feels great when just typing on it, I really do love using it.  Ultimately I paid somewhere around $180 for it and

Pretty sure I specifically spelled out that weaknesses of the 6Gv2

And lack of legs isn't an argument for or against quality, but design function, and if anything it would count towards quality because lack of extension legs means the legs can't break because they're not there :P

I agree its decent, all I was saying was that I don't consider it any better than my Cherry board, slightly worse than my 6Gv2, and that all three are a good deal behind my Filco.

Because Cherry actually made boards with their mechanical switches for years and years prior to other companies joining in on the fun?  And if they are so good, why are there so many on Ebay to begin with? :P

I got the filco and I'm very glad I did

the mechanical keyboards I had before is the leopold fc500r, zowie celeritas, 2x steelseries 6gv2 and the noppoo choc mini.

And none of them is near the quality of the filco, not even the leopold that came closest in terms of quality. So I see no reason for the filco hate that come from the solutor

and yeah, mine doesn't ping
