British layout makes even less keys usable though

this one is a better deal for a doubleshot harvest, it's nib. or this one, if they take a lower offer.

eh, not really - I have one like it, you're missing not only the whole bottom row, but also the right shift, numpad zero, and numpad plus (assuming that you are using a 104) even if you have a TKL you still need the right shift.

Honestly, I'm starting to see the wisdom of just buying the $80 sets that the guy on HK is selling.
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

Sometimes a good price on even a usable 37 set can be an attractive buy. Using blanks for the rest can look pretty good too. I had one of my boards set up like that for awhile. It all depends on what you want. If you are going for a full set there are better options than the 1800 style for sure.

How can you tell what on ebay is double shot and what isn't?

My undersdanding is that an "H" in Cherry keyboard model numbers means High quality keycaps: doubleshots.
Kinesis Contoured Advantage & Advantage2 LF with Cherry MX Red switches / Extra keys mod / O-ring dampening mod / Dvorak layout. ErgoDox with buzzer and LED mod.
Also: Kinesis Advantage Classic, Kinesis Advantage2, Data911 TG3, Fingerworks Touchstream LP, IBM SSK (Buckling spring), Goldtouch GTU-0077 keyboard

That is the most important factor. And if a board has custom keys those will usually be lasered. Once you've dealt with them enough you can usually spot them easily with a decent photo.

The g81-8000 is a pretty good donor for full-sized keyboards since everything works except for the front row and caps lock
