So ive been sitting around waiting for a good mech to come out, and I am looking at either:

---- Ducky Shine
or
---- CM storm Trigger

Problem is both wont be out for a good while longer, and truth be told...the mechanical keyboard market is very weak in terms of Quality Control and distribution, not to mention the prices are way too inflated. So current available mechs are NOT an option for me.

I need a 40-50ish dollar kb to last me a good 4-6 months while the mechs that i want are released.

1) I need gaming acceptable nkro...meaning 4-5 nkro will do fine...as long as i can do cntrl w r, or shift w space, i need to be covered.
2) I need the typing feel to be the best it can be for this price range...and we all know some gaming keyboards absolutely suck in keystroke feel.

I am confused about what to get exactly...

$38 ---- Saitek Cyborg V 5
$47 ---- Saitek Cyborg V 7
$44 ---- Microsoft Sidewinder X4
$38 ---- Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 for Business (or is retail version better?)

How does the ms natural ergo 4000 stack up against the gaming keyboards? The x4 has a large nkro, but at the same time awkwardly small keys...while the cyborgs only have gaming optimized matrixes, meaning only wasd area and arrows are nkro, while the rest is not. How does the Logitech G110 compare to these?

My biggest concern is getting a cyborg or sidewinder, and having it suck compared to a natural ergo 4000. I want some level of good typing feel without giving up the little bit of nkro that i need for pc gaming.

How does the typing feel on these boards I have listed? Is the natural ergo 4000 typing much better than the others? Is there really a difference in the rubber domes?

Tell me what keyboard to buy for 35-50ish bucks to hold me over till the mechanicals arrive please...

PS: the reason i need a new board immediately, is my old rubber domes have really bad ghosting, even with stuff like cntrl w r or shift w space.

What switch were you thinking of getting?  Another option in your price range would be a "rawko" Cherry POS board off eBay in either brown or clear, the G80-8200 are NKRO over PS/2.  (the native USB versions are only 2KRO though.)  But if you don't have a PS/2 to USB adapter in your junk box then you might have to spend a *little* more money.  Just throwing that out there in case you didn't realize that you could actually get a decent mechanical for cheap.
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

Have you used all existing mechanical keyboards and know that QC is bad or are you trying to infer stuff from complaints on forums. I have purchased 6 mechs in the past 9 months and have had zero QC issues.

Don't get the Ergo - it's an awful rubber dome board (with a layout to die for!)

I would personally recommend the Sidewinder X4.

Well, in 2011 I had 2 blackwidow razer ultimates, 2 das professional silent s, and lastly a filco ninja black switch, so ive tried all 3 major switches and spent 2-4 weeks with each one.

Its not that the QC of mech kbs is that horrible, its just that they all have something wrong with them in one way or another. The blackwidows i had had broken LEDs under a key or 2, while the first das was great mechanically, it's shiny encasing was covered in scratches right out of the box brand new, and the replacement Das silent s had a led light under num lock that was shining very dim, also a sign of a serious defect. The filco was awesome, but had a messed up cherry black switch under F7. I could've lived with the messed up F7 key with the filco...but i paid 160 bucks for that board, so i expected it to be at least perfect for the first month or 2.

My only gripe with current mechs is that they're way too expensive, and if they're supposed to last 5x longer (50 million key presses) longer than rubber domes, theres no reason they should have so many little defects here and there when they're brand new right from the factory.

Also...with the exception of the das or bw ultimate...its hard to get a quick replacement of the other mechs out there. I wanted to replace my filco ninja, but theres no more stock...and ordering from UK would cost almost 200 dollars for the same item due to shipping.

does the sidewinder x4 have cramped small keys? or is it the same layout and key size as all standard boards? I saw a lot of reviewes mention the small keys...whats your opinion on this? I have big hands :)

I'd have been tempted to replace the switch on the Filco myself... but I like tinkering with stuff.  Cherry switches aren't that hard to disassemble/troubleshoot but on a Filco you do need to desolder them to remove them from the plate.

No, it has standard-sized keys. The function keys are smaller, though. Otherwise, it is a very standard back-lit keyboard.

EDIT: I've seen mention of "small keys" in reviews, and I honestly don't understand where they're coming from. They felt completely standard to me.

I was using the MS 4000 for BF2 for the last 2-3 years before I discovered there was such a thing as mechanical keyboards.  Before that I was using the older white version.  I didn't really know how awful they were to type on till about a week ago when I found an old Dell AT-101 in the storage.  The 4000 worked well for me for games but if you have previous experience with mechanical keyboards I doubt you'll like typing on one.

I have a Razer Lycosa Mirror I'm trying to sell off, it's a nice keyboard and the backlighting is very subtle and doesn't distract very bad while gaming, nice looking, keys feel damn good.

Link.

i have an affinity for the ergo4k, but i have also used the ergo4k to play eq2 an MMO, for 6 years, i was the top top person of my server and was leading an entire guild to victory for 2 years using the keyboard, this was before i knew about mech boards and started modding my ergo4k tho, but i used the ergo4k to the bone.

Sounds like really bad luck! I'm sorry that happened. Four filcos, a Leopold, and a Realforce here and zero issues, pinging or otherwise.

I've had better luck on ebay than you're having. I mostly get used boards, and they come up as described and work as expected. I don't think I've needed to get a refund for a single one as far as shiny keys or anything like that is concerned.

Although I have had to get rid of 2 boards from the classifieds that weren't as described at all.
