How to pull Keys without "keypullertool"
« on: Tue, 06 September 2011, 11:01:59 »
Hey,

just want to know, how you guys pull off keys off your Keyboard, if you don't have the desired tool at your side?
I have to swich a whole keyset and don't want to harm/brake something.

Best regards,

Simon

Take two paper clips (large smooth ones work well), put the larger rounded parts under opposite corners of the keycap and gently pull up until it pops off.  If it feels stiff and hard to pull off, try to wiggle it off by alternating gentle pulls on each corner.  Once you get a few of them off you can probably get your fingers in there and pull off the others.

Be careful on the larger keys, depending on the type of keyboard, it can have somewhat delicate stabilizers underneath that can break if you are too rough.

Pry with a flat screwdriver under the edge from one side. Hold a finger or two from your other hand on the other side, to keep the key cap upright and so that you don't bend the key stem. The downside with this method is that you could damage the edge of the key cap if you are not careful enough. It works best on keyboards where the key caps are quite loose, such as those with Cherry switches.

I still use this method on ISO enter keys, because my plastic key cap puller is too small for it.

So thanks for the now really goot hints/tips. I did it without braking my new Filco (ordered a set of blanks with it) :)
The larger keys first were a miracle to me -.- but its all fine now.

I would have ordered a key puller with them, but I've read somewhere, that the Filco includes a puller as well as a red ESC-Key. But none of theme were in the box. Well... it's done. Thanks for every advice!
