NIB model M space saver- 2 days left at $100
« on: Tue, 18 October 2011, 11:29:40 »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Model-M-Keyboard-1988-Vintage-NEW-UNOPENED-/270835090272?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3566178435422604487

I'm 90% sure this is a model M space saver in there.

I have been watching this auction for the past few days and it based off of todays bidding I think there are others who realized this

Based on the label he posted it looks like this is a '88.  Is an NIB ssk from 88 worth more than one from the 90s? That model number is kind of a mystery- Today he posted that the inner box is 19" long. Anybody know the exact length of a full size model M?

It caught my eye seeing the blue box, then I realized it was a mini.

The earlier the better to me, I like my model M's to have silver squares whenever possible but with a space saving M it's not an option... unless you own a dremel.

My original plan was to get this keyboard for $50 and then post a thread gloating about it. Then those other bids came in today and it seemed like other people had figured it out :(

Also, the guy must have his reserve set super high considering he thought this was probably just a NIB full size board.

How much you want to bet the same guy wins this, as well as all other SSK on ebay right now? He has already won 2 in the last week, and I bet he has 10+ sitting in his garage somewhere. Prboably willing to pay $1000 each to make sure he does.

Don't drop your supply-demand curve Rip, that is relating to markets not hoarders.

When 1 person is willing to pay ANY price for a good, not matter what the supply/demand is, that is not on the curve.

Congrats!  Used, correct?  Otherwise you're messing up my model.

it follows your model, its definately used, i think i need to get some oxyclean for that board. it looks like its in good shape, just dirty. Reason it stayed low is the guy didn't call it a spacesaver on the title. It was just "Vintage IBM keyboard 1397681 Model M" and was not in the usual ebay category for peripherals. I think only 1 other bidder saw it.

Many of them were fairly beat up, with markings and deep etches from previous owners (a school?).  That was kind of one of his last batches.

Beat up? Not at all, I got 2 from that batch, and they weren't even broken in. But yes, they did have markings either on the side or bottom, so not very visible. It really was a steal at $50, he could easily have asked for double and it would still be fair.

I still resold one of Bryan's for a significant profit. People are still willing to pay $150 + shipping regardless of the condition, provided it works.

I tried buying from him, but they were all gone. I am guessing the first couple people that saw it bought them all. $50 is a great price, I wish I had seen it sooner.

As to people that don't seem to understand the supply-demand model; I suggest you go ask your banker/broker about it. Supply demand curve is extremely simplified, there are so many other variables that go into play, in the real world, that it is just plain stupid to say that graph explains prices. Go to the commodities exchange on wall street, and try to make money with your "supply demand" curve.

LOL!  You said it yourself.  Your demand was not met with the lack of supply, because the price was low enough to generate enough demand that cleaned up the supply.

What? The first statement was about the Bryan_Twizzle SSK's, nothing to do with the ebay ones. My bad for confusion, but you really need to accept the fact that you can't use that excessively basic model for anything other than teaching people fundamentals of economics.

I wonder how high the demand of feather is to that featherless rooster?  Would it pay extra for the opportunity to get some feather?  Or maybe the demand was so high that the rooster was willing to let go of his feather?

I don't think I could call it the other name or the filter would catch it...

DONT DO IT! There is enough to go around, no need to buy every one you see and put it in a box never to see light of day again, like every other SSK owner seems to do. They need to roam free on the desks of happy users, and have their keys get daily massages.

Based on a little research, I do not think this is a Space Saver. This model computer came with either full sized or space saver boards, and the fullsized ones would fit inside that box with 1-1/2" given to styrofoam. Sucks for the buyer if it isn't. I could be wrong, either way I would say he overpayed.

Really?  Why didn't you?

At that time, he didn't have the picture of the inner box on craigslist and I was sort of iffy on making the trip down there without seeing the inside so I requested for a picture while pushing the meet up date. That gave him enough time to research the keyboard and there you have it. Oh well lol.

Edit:
Also way back when I was starting to learn about mechanical keyboards, I came across a blue-labeled Space Saver on craigslist semi-locally for $15 dollars only. I thought this was fantastic until I saw that he was also selling a Rolex Mariner Gold watch for $25 which raised a red flag. Of course, I started asking all of these questions and requested for pictures to which he provided me of the front side only. Stupidly, despite it clearly being a Space Saver, I asked for a picture of the back label. He said he returned the camera back to his friend but typed out the label in the email for me. That probably gave him the idea to research the keyboard and the next day (day he was supposed to ship it to me) I got an email with "I am sorry my girlfriend will not let me sell it anymore. Sorry for the inconvenience". Such an odd thing for a girlfriend to say unless she did some research.

BTW, that Rolex watch was a replica. Although I highly doubt there would be a replica Space Saver keyboard, I asked for pictures nonetheless.

Exactly on the bold! Every single time I think about my past encounters with good craigslist finds, "Slickdeals/noobs/calling support" always comes to mind and haunts me haha. I'm seriously going to "stop calling support" on my craigslist finds.

This is an IBM 1392934 SSK.  In looking at my list of SSK ID (serial) numbers that I've bought, or have seen sold to others, or pictures of, here's some pertinent ID numbers:

Some sample 1932934 ID numbers:
2000010 : 1987.6.4 (Earliest that I've seen, so evidently this model number began with ID number 2000000 or 2000001)
2001587 : 1988.4.7
2002459 : 1988.4.28 (this keyboard)
2002797 : 1988.5.16
2003087 : 1988.9.21 (last I've seen in this series of ID numbers)
500XXXX : 1990 -

Clearly the ID number of this auction matches very well with the 1392934 ID number sequence.

Some people get confused with the shipping number and think it's some sort of a model number.  It isn't.  It's just the shipping number that has no correlation to the model number.

So assuming the label that shows the ID number matches the keyboard inside, I don't think the buyer will be disappointed.  Though I do think the buyer paid too much.
