wyse THICK double shot keycaps
« on: Wed, 28 December 2011, 18:56:14 »
these are the earlier THICK keycaps from Wyse, please note the layout is ISO/GB one. Pict 1 shows what you will get. The third key from Pict 2 and the first key from Pict 3 are from cherry and the later thin wyse respectively, just show the comparison between the thickness among the three.

$35 shipped worldwide.

Please send money through as GIFT, otherwise please add 3% handling fee.

frankly, I don't. my personal guess is that wyse was in transition from the thick one to the thin one, so you can find in the same keyboard both the thin and thick, quite fun actually.

the wyse stuff is cool, i am done with cherry, well almost done.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Can't wait for one perfect set forever.

I still have not figured out that, as even within this model, you will find a totally thin-capped board, a partially thin-capped one and a fully thick-capped one. This one is produced in around 1991, as stated in QC label found inside. The 1993 boards are all thin-capped. So I guess the safer bet will be those made in late 80s and before.
And as I use those thick one on a Wyse PCE board (900866-01), the modifier issue does not bother me. And also to a lesser extent, ISO/ANSI layout difference. I just use all the original modifiers. The color scheme also matches perfect.
Although I don't have the equipment on hand, I think those wyse thick caps should be just very slightly heavier than the thick DS cherry ones. The wyse is certainly better finished than the cherry ones.

They used some different fonts and had a smaller more centered position on some of the later ones. Some of them don't have the cool yellow arrows either. Later ones have a closed 4 instead of open, and extra legends on the numpad instead of just numbers. The grey color of the keycaps seem to be a lighter shade too on the later ones.
The older 30-60 models seem to be the most likely to have the thick caps.
Looks like they are in excellent shape and it's rare that none of the modifiers etc. are grey. I already have my own 37+numbers set that I salvaged and don't really need another one. If more keycaps were modern size for the correct locations I would pick them up.
GLWS.

the tragic thing is that the board itself is even nicer than the caps, they make the cheap filco caps feel better than they are. such a pity can't make those terminal boards working again.

'Do you mean the switches?'

the board, that is the black cherry together with the metal plate. they just feel nicer (more dampened sound, without being at the same time hard, like the filco ones for example, and more solid feel, less vibration from the caps/switches) than the later wyse keyboard. maybe that has to do with the thickness of the plate, PCB layers, plastic quality, lubrication used etc.
even the cherry stabilizer found in wyse is much nicer than the ones you find in cherry keyboard, and it is a lot easier to remove/change than the filco costar one.
