I have made a silly switch mod, I think.
« on: Mon, 09 January 2012, 16:06:17 »
To pass the time, as for the next few weeks I won't have cash to spare for parts as I save up for ANOTHER type of keyboard (Musical), I decided to **** around with the leftover parts from disassembling all of the clears from a board I plan to mod out with ergo clears. one of my curious ideas was to see if a switch would still work if I jammed two clear springs behind one blue stem (leftover from me repairing my Das), and lo and behold, it works. I attempted the ripometer/nickel stacking nonsense and for the moment, I seem to be out of nickels.

At the moment, I plan to make the switch my capslock switch, making it difficult to accidentally hit, but still technically usable. It would be highly useless outside of any keys you almost never want to hit, but for things like capslock for me, It might just work like a charm. I'll update more once I finish the board and see how everything actually runs.

Welcome to GeekHack! I'd recommend using a stronger spring (like from a black switch) rather than what you're doing. That two spring thing may not hold up too well over time.

Oh, I'm well aware,a heavier spring would be the more reasonable idea, but should it work. I love the amount of force it takes to activate the switch, which is well above a black spring. Like I said, I'll most likely give it a bit of time and testing to see how it works, especially with the possible problems stemming from the sheer pressure of the springs, but it doesn't feel like anything is wrong so far.

What? Clear springs are stronger than black springs. He just tossed two of them into it.

Good point, I forgot about that. I guess there isn't really a stronger cherry spring I know of then.

I hate the $1 coins.  I accidentally overtipped by pouring 4 of them into a coffee joint tip jar.

Yes uhh i have done that as well and you can't reach back in and get it even though its quite obvious that the barista skills required to pour my black coffee doesn't warrant a 3$ tip but oh well

To my knowledge, Gray switches use the Clear springs and are, in fact, just Clear switches with an identically shaped Gray stem.

Why not use your caps lock key for something useful? Like backspace or control. Or as a layer switcher so you can have arrow keys and what not in the letter block.

Because games occasionally use the key, and the keyboard is going to be mostly used at Lan centers and SC2 events. Anything I can't hard mod in is essentially useless. The Das generally sits as the main Keyboard on my PC. Besides, I have no plans to NEVER use it, just rarely, and it's somewhat annoying to accidentally hit it. Making it Backspace doesn't actually make it less annoying.

EDIT: Also, for a little info, all coin tests have put it in the ballpark of 125g. It's pretty damn hefty, but still usable.

Scratch the note I have here, I thought it wasn't bottoming out due to the springs, but it indeed was, I just wasn't mashing it hard enough to bottom out.
