Topre mod to 30 weight?
« on: Wed, 11 January 2012, 04:58:08 »
Okay so I have a Realforce silent version in the variable weight.  I've seen others mention that they modified theirs to 30 weight?  Can someone either point me to a thread or WIKI that shows how to do this?  I'm not sure if I really even need to change my Realforce as I really do like it a lot but just maybe I'd like all 30's even better.  I love a super light switch.  The lighter the better.  Also, for anyone that has done the mod, why did you do it and did it change the feel of the key other than the resistance?

Thanks.
Current in order of preference:  RealForce 87U Silent White with variable weighted keys X 2, Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless with Linear Reds, Filco Number-pad, Poker with Linear Reds

Sold or returned:  Multiple Microsoft and Logitech keyboards, Das Keyboard Silent, Cherry 6140, RealForce 103UB, RealForce 86U, Filco Majestouch 2 full sized with Linear Reds

You will be able to make you board any lighter weight like this pic from this page: http://www.computerartisan.com/hhk/hhkcust.html
But you never can't put it back. It is a way of the real man :)

Or buy another(30g) Realforce and swap rubber domes.
This is the way I took on my HHKB.

^ how did you swap your HHKB domes with the donors' so they may fit?
(I did read itlnstln doing such mod, and ripster cut individual rubber dome and swapped them in an 87 U)but for the whole board, I still have no concrete image of doing it.

In my case donor is Realforce 101 and its dome sheet almost fits except for Fn, modifier and backspace part.
You need only scissors, driver and extra money :) It is easy mod.

wow. that's fast. Great.. (I'm not convinced about your definition of 'easy', considering I most the mods you've done are impossible for me to do.. :( )
I wonder how it will turn out (I've placed orders for 108U 30g).. bet I'll have to carve the spacebar rubberdome sheet.

and uh. about the silencing mods with foam/rubber feet,
do they feel the same as the factory-installed ones?
I mean, I'm typing this using 87U 10 anniv. ed, feels good, key travel just about right, sounds great too.
So, I'm thinking of doing the mod for my hhkb (without having to pry open and cannibalize the silencer from my newly arrived 87U, hopefully)

Congrat! You already have done most deficult part of this mod! I mean, to shop the expensive board for donor.

Unfortunately I have no Topre silence board to compare with.
In comparison with normal HHKB silence mode causes a bit shorter stroke and less tactile feel.
It is lighter weight and a bit linear feel, in other word dull or not crisp. I like this result but YMMV of course.

^no, shopping is easy, the hard part is convincing myself of my sanity when I stare at the invoices

It'll take some time for the 108U 30g to arrive (Good thing I don't live anywhere near cleverly)
Will report (and maybe ask you to explain the mod- take pity on me please, I've never wielded a solder nor screwdrivers in 25 years) asap.

Uh.....I find this mod drastic.

Why not do the one in my sig?
Um, actually, your mod is the first I want to apply (there are reasons why I don't post until yesterday- mainly because I found most of what I need in the forum, including your sig), but alas, it's all of the keys (or at least the alpha part) of my HHKB that I want to mod to 30g, and I don't have the gut to do irreversible mods as hasu has pointed me to, so it left dome-donoring as the only viable option.

I'll be cutting them anyway, since the 108U layout is different than the HHKB, mainly its modifier row.

Actually, I found that dampened 30g topre switch in my 87USD more like cherry mx red, with quieter and smoother feel, hence the mod.
