Let me know when it's realistically possible for a government to have nothing to do with the economic practices in the state it governs bro

The point is the government should be an entity apart from business with control over it, not that it should "have nothing to do" with its economic practices.  Government should also in no way base its decision-making around the health of financial markets, because these abstractions do not represent the citizenry they have been elected to serve.  Did you mistake me for the lolbertarian who started this thread?

People have forgotten the notion of the public good in the US that services like USPS, roads, schools, and social welfare programs provide.  Now, all you hear is complaints over people getting nothing for their taxes, because Republicans and their backwards, self-fulfilling prophecy of "government is ineffective, therefore we should defund government to make it less effective, thus making us even more correct" have been inserted so deeply into the system.  Like all conservatives, they pit the working and what's left of the middle classes against themselves and one another with their constant *****ing about unions and religious issues, while crying that the wealthy "job-creators" (who are doing far better than anybody else, yet sitting on their fat wads and banging the drum of yet more outsourcing instead of hiring anybody American) pay too much in tax... despite the fact that the vast majority of millionaires class their income as capital gains and pay only 15% (didn't Romney's tax return list his occupation as "unemployed"?).

The major problem is that Obama is a center-right candidate, and all his opponents are farther right than Genghis Khan.  There is no legitimate workers' party in the US or UK, since the UK's Labour betrayed its principles to appeal to suburbanites, same as Clinton did.  And so working men and women have nobody to represent them in government, nor in the private sector as unions are increasingly defanged and have their bargaining power broken.

And so wages remain stagnant for working people while millionaires see their profits and their workers' productivity climb to astronomical levels.  And so our society continues to rebuild itself in the shape of an inverted pyramid - with a broad slab of wealth spread for miles across the top for people who slosh numbers around in a financial sea, and the tip of the spire balanced plunged into the chest of the people who actually produce and create.

Now that the Fifth Amendment is a dead letter and Obama can kill anybody he wants without due process, the next step is usually the disappearance of political enemies and mass graves.

The Stellar Wind project has to be stopped. And all governments are the same.
I disagree.

The government whose troops visited your country in 1968 is vastly different from that of the United States, or the government of your own country. Democratic governments work for their people, on behalf of them, under their control.

Still, while I think the complex in Bluffdale is merely a routine response to increasing security needs in the post-9/11 world, I was surprised to read

"According to another top official also involved with the program, the NSA made an enormous breakthrough several years ago in its ability to cryptanalyze, or break, unfathomably complex encryption systems employed by not only governments around the world but also many average computer users in the US."

in the article.

I wouldn't have thought that such a breakthrough was possible... in respect of normal secret-key encryption. But I would not think it impossible that they could have finally found the "magic screw" that vitiates public-key encryption; despite three major forms of it, RSA, discrete logarithms, and elliptic curves, their mathematical bases are closely related.

I didn't read the 18 pages of comments, but thought I would chime in anyway.  America is SOL because we live in an idiocracy.  Democracy gives everyone an equal vote.  Unfortunately, the people that reproduce in this country the most are the stupidest, fattest, and most unproductive, but they get more voting power simply because of numbers.  How many people with high level degrees or business owners have 10+ kids?  Lazy people collecting wellfare who trade foodstamps for 10 cents on the dollar cash to buy crack, and religious morons who believe the literal interpretation of the bible(Ex: the earth is about 5000 years old, has four corners, etc.) pop out kids like it's going out of style.  I was raised Catholic and in the hood, so I'm speaking from experience.  Americans are mostly fat, lazy, AND stupid, which makes me sad to see my country going down the toilet.  We live in a country where most people are at least 50lbs overweight and watch garbage like real housewives and Jersey shore...WTF!!!  Don't even get me started on the two party system we have dominating this country.  Either you vote for dumbocrat, retardican, or you just throw your vote away by voting independent.  People tell me that if I don't like America that I should leave, but I love my country, I just hate the majority of fat morons that live in it.

Yeah I said it, but you know you were thinking it.

If you had read the thread you would have realized the constant theme was the inability of today's Geekhackers to read long posts and learn something.

I think I just proved my point about Americans.  I'm not fat or dumb like most of us Americans, but I will concede that I am lazy.  That's why I do well in IT.  Rather than run around as if I were lit on fire trying to solve things, I sit down and figure out the easiest, fastest, most efficient way to get things done.

That's dumb - outsourced software has a much higher failure rate than software written by good American programmers in the good ol' USA.

I would disagree.  Even the **** we so in-house sucks.  Programmers are good at banging out code. They typically lack any business sense or UX skills. They do the task, but dont think in a larger sense (blinders effect). This is why Apple owns in the mobile arena. My Android devices own Apple in functionality, but if you can't use it, who gives a ****?

Yeah, except I program, I just work on the business side.

Our IT department hates me. I own them on the business side, and I can create better solutions and implement them into production faster than they can.

the question is not if we should work, the question is if the amount of stuff you get is relative to the amount of labour you do...

issue is that scale is way off. the average factory workers gets an tiny amount of money compared to the factory owner.

on the question of tax: tax promotes the economy, as it gives the poorer people in society something to spend, thus leading to more demand, thus leading to an improved economy.
Rich people are actually fairly bad for an economy as they don't spend there money, there saving it all up.

also, taxes are vital for things like healthcare, social services ect.

Well I believe that taxation is theft. Governments are terrible at managing businesses, which is why the majority of government-funded programs suck. But I'm a libertarian.

My theory is that ripster is so rich that tax increases hardly make a dent, therefore he supports them. A lot of rich liberals in California are this way.

Well I believe that taxation is theft. Governments are terrible at managing businesses, which is why the majority of government-funded programs suck. But I'm a libertarian.

My theory is that ripster is so rich that tax increases hardly make a dent, therefore he supports them. A lot of rich liberals in California are this way.

goverments might be flawed, but so are capitalistic enterprises, a laissez faire capitalistic free market leads to explotation of the majority of the population, in favor of a small minority.

taxation isn't theft, you get it back in services. it becomes an issue when tax ends up in the pockets of people who do not deserve it, or in the hands of people who do not need it.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need would be a good philosophy to live by.
