1000 caps is far too many is what I'm getting at. It becomes something so common that you will not get the same kind of interest. There's a fine line between making something limited and sought after and something that will cause people to lose interest. If this was a one time thing sure, but you're looking to do this once a month, there will more so many GH caps that people won't know what to do with it.
At $2.50 a cap you won't get as much orders definitely but at the same time it's not expensive, and the donation to GH could be less also but it will create a want for these keycaps instead of just mass producing plastics that people won't want.
What I want to see out of this project is something that's limited and sought after and people want to collect instead of having 1000 of these floating around with people having tons to spare
While on paper, yes, 1000 keycaps is a large amount for something being done once a month but that is both a ceiling amount at 100 people (there are a lot of people in this buy right now who even with the price at $.41 have limited themselves to under 5) the thing that should be examined is where these caps are going. A lot of people on this forums, and especially those who would be interested in representing it through these types of keys, have multiple keyboards on which to put them.
I also look at these caps a bit differently than everyone else because while some people may intend on selling them later on I do not because, well, I can't. The best that I can do with keycaps these days is buy them or trade them but there is no way for me to have money coming in (even money going out is a ***** to handle because I have to proxy). Having ~10 of each kind, and in turn about, if not under, ~5, to trade later on for other keycaps is a cool thing.
Finally, the rarity of these keycaps is protected whether or not we limit the production. If you look at the SC2 buy, which ended about three months ago, the resell on those keycaps is nearly naught in the forums because people frankly do not want to sell them. Having limited colors like these GH keys means that when people get their hands on them, whether they cost $.41 or $2.50, a majority of people will want to hold on to them.
There are obviously dissenting opinions on this process but from my point of view having a lower price but modest maximum is a strong way to go.
