A tenkeyless Cherry MX-Red keyboard
« on: Sun, 26 February 2012, 09:24:02 »
Probably millionth thread of this subject, but I need help because it seems like I'm stuck.

I currently have a Blackwidow Ultimate, I like the MX Blue switches a lot, but hate the branding and Razer itself, lol. I've been thinking of buying a new keyboard, and been really interested in MX Red switches.

There are a few options, like

Leopold FC200R MX-Red
Filco Linear-R MX-Red
CM Storm MX-Red
Poker MX-Red
Noppoo MX-Red

I don't want a Leopold or a Poker, because they use the Cherry-style stabilizers, which I hate. Noppoo I'm not sure which stabilizers it has, but I just don't like it for some reason. Filco R tenkeyless' are so ****ing expensive, esp. compared to other Filcos. CM Storm seems perfect otherwise, but the branding is just something I can't live with, and I don't feel like painting the case.

I'll be getting a set of white PBT-caps anyways, so I don't care about the basic caps.

The keyboard would be used for gaming, FPS and RTS (dota2, dunno if you can call that RTS though) and typing. I don't type that much, but I do type pretty fast at least on my Blackwidow, 134 wpm afaik. I'd like to know how the reds are for gaming and typing especially compared to MX Blue's. I love the click of MX Blue's, but I don't feel like i should get the same switches I already have. I do planning on getting a Filco tenkeyless MX Blue though later.

TL;DR: How are red's for typing and gaming, and are there any upcoming MX Red boards or am I missing some that are currently on sale. Costar stabilizers, no overbranding, not too expensive (filco r), TENKEYLESS and needs to be built good, I want a keyboard that lasts for a long long time.

Thanks for your help.

if you don't like branding don't get the cooler master, a lot of people seem to complain about it for that reason!

Seriously?  Yes there's branding on the CM's but it's not THAT bad!  You're denying yourself a great board by shunning it due to a little branding... You're basically getting a Filco TKL red's but without the price tag...

I know, it seems like a perfect board but the branding just is too much for me..

Fair enough mate.  I guess there's only one option if you're also not into the Leo's.... and that is to save up for the Filco reds. I think they're rather hard to find though... I haven't seen one for sale in a while!

Edit:  Don't mean to be pushy but why don't you just give the CM's a go?  It's not that pricey plus if the branding becomes too much to handle you can always sell it onto someone here.

Your being too picky, buy the cm because you don't like cherry stabilizers and be happy with it :P

I don't want a keyboard that I would get bored of or not like in few weeks / months. I hate the branding so much, that I'm fairly sure I'd get annoyed by it in few weeks.

ripster, do you think that Filco would release new keyboards this year, possibly with red switches? since you're this prediction master right ? )

I agree that you are missing out on a good board just because you hate branding.

The cmstorm qfr is a great board. You can read several threads here that say good things about it - some of which are my threads.

Here is one thing that you may have a problem though, a keyboard that doesn't need branding is also highly likely a keyboard that is overpriced and expensive. Its the law of supply and demand my friend, a keyboard that no longer needs 'to advertise' itself is a popular keyboard and therefore has high demand for it and prices go up with high demand.

I don't know why you even listed down your choices because you actually really have no choice...

Basically here are the reasons why you're not going to get the keyboards:

Leopold - cherry stabilizers
Filco - too expensive
CM Storm - branding
Poker - cherry stabilizers
Noppoo - just don't like

You just answered your own question. By process of elimination, just don't get any of them lol. Or, if you actually do want a MX red board, there's gotta be some kind of compromise.

The Leopold TKL is great, Elitekeyboards is a great company which used to sell Filcos but switched to Leopold, which means they should be equally as good in quality. I ordered a TKL Leopold in Brown this morning cant wait! Its like $50 cheaper than the Filco and great quality. But if your willing to spend more get the Filco. CM storm is also a great option  if you can get hold of one and deal with all the branding.

Only ISO though. (There might be hope! Edit: I really meant to say "at least you can hope for one with ANSI layout" but I hit the post button too quickly.)

I have owned all type of boards.  The Leopold to me just doesn't feel anything like the Filco.  I bought a Leopold because I had no keyboard at the time (sold my Filco MX Browns).  I wanted to sell that Leopold kb within 20 minutes of use.  For Filco Reds, I bought 2 of them at $230 shipped.  These keyboards feel so great compared to any other keyboards.  The only reason why I sold them was because I am planning to just stick with my Realforce 87U 45g.  I kind of wish I kept the cherry mx board though because 1. they feel superb 2. you can customize it with all sorts of key caps at a low price compared to the realforce.

Please help me out here - why does everyone assume that because the CM Storm has the same stabilizers as the Filco - or even if it comes out of the same factory (I don't know if it does) that it is the same quality?

People said the same thing about Rosewill and there are a huge number of complaints about them.

(Oh it pains me to defend Filco...)

Never claimed it to be the exact same quality but near enough.  Don't beat yourself up about defending Filco's.... A lot of people here do it all the time! lol

Here's something I pulled out... CM's=Costar.

I would say go for the storm, if you like the layout and the appearance. Ef the branding, no one cares. Hell, I love the reds in any board.
