I would not worry about historic content.  I consider that "grandfathered in" to some extent.  Focus on new content...

It's part of gh's charm that we have lively discussions. Quenching that will kill the community and the site.

That is exactly why I am here, I have accounts on many forums and never posted, I found geekhack and just recently created my account, I am up to like 50? 15? something or other posts and climbing and that is because I find it interesting and worth reading and posting, if it were not for the way that discussions developed tangents and those tangents became sentient and took over the conversation it would not be interesting, and I would have gotten the information about my keyboard, and bookmarked it as a place to search for information every once in a while, I would not have lit my wallet on fire, and I would not be posting this.

That being said, I am new here, but I am not new to forums in general, and I think that moderators definitely have a place, when I'm scrolling through a thread and I see something that is offensive or malicious towards a specific person or group of people I often wish that I had the power to censor that, but I think that short of a direct assault on a person or a people there is little reason to censor stuff, as people have said this is by and large a very mature community and from what I have noticed in my limited time it has a way and regulating its self, most of the time.

Bottom line I think that moderators should be there to step in and basically tap someone on the shoulder and let them know that they are getting out of line, not to make everything fit in neat little boxes and be cold, organized and firmly following a set of rules, that is now what makes this forum good.

I had more thoughts but my train of thought derailed, blew up, and the wreckage was abducted by aliens so I am done for now.

see the thing about being a moderator is that it is always a thankless job and you're more often than not accused rather than praised. Take for instance the news they'll say " we think this person [insert mugshot] is suspected of being guilty of something", but they don't say a week later "oh yea that mugshot we plastered on the 10 o'clock news, yea he wasn't the guy", instead they just go on to find the next mugshot to plaster up. You'll always point out what's wrong because you believe it affects YOU, and in that instance shouldn't it be affecting everyone?
poor mods we should have a thanks button for them.

The whole "oh you peons wouldn't understand the hardships and sacrifice required when taking up the mantle of being a moderator" shtick, that always comes up during debates like this, kinda assumes that none of us have been moderators on large boards before.  Some of us have, and it's really not that hard if you just have some common sense, normal social functioning, and bit of humility.

Yes. Thanks for that write up. Being a mod is a service you accept to contribute back to something that has done a lot for you. Period. It is not status, or mean you are special (no offense, 'cause some of you are VERY special). LOL

Maybe there should be time limits of 6 months for mods. Like 6 months on, 6 months off as a reminder to keep it real

Directed at all of us, but especially the mods...  God damn, it's just a ****ing keyboard forum.  It's not a job.  You're not even going to be able to put this on a resume.  Chill the **** out...

If I were an employee, I would TOTALLY put my GH involvement on my resume. Along with girl-chasing, and traveling to U.S.banned countries (Cuba and Burma).

I had a whole post wrote up, but meh.
Aggressive moderation will always devolve into something adversarial, which will make it less fun for all involved. People will just test the boundary on what they can get away with and make the situation worse than when we not have mods. We have a decent culture here and it worked fined without the mods for the most part. We're better off with a few supermods that talks to the trouble makers and deal with reported posts, instead of having lots of individual mods.

A wise little birdie taught me that a while back when I was dealing with other issues, so it's not exactly a pearl of wisdom I came up with.  That said, it's good to think about from time-to-time.

At any rate, I asked iMav to remove me as a mod a few days ago, and I see today that he granted my wish.  I just don't have the time for a second job.

Also, the mods, including myself, are just trying to run things the way that we see fit. We, as a community will figure this out, guys and gals. Like itlnstln said, this is indeed a keyboard forum, nothing more, nothing less. We are expanding and feeling that, especially since Geekhack is quite young, almost 5 years young to be precise. We will get it all figured out guys.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It's amazing what google finds and it fit current topics at least the post I quoted.

The point is most of the butthurt goes in a cycle.....everyone acts like things are so bad but then they cool off and flare up everyone once in a while....sound like some cream would help.

DAAAANNGGG!!!! Ray pulled this fetid turd from his ass along with other dead-threads? LOL. I think I understand what an "Inappropriately old thread bump is" now. I'd hate to see what others he resurrected. This is what happens when we get our schedules disrupted and too much time (family holidays and being out of town).

That was a very messed up time on many levels at GH and I had extreme personal issues (stalker, paid almost $500k to avoid legal issues, health, bleak future, etc)....wish none of it happened but glad it's in the past.

My biggest ***** was about deletions.

Now, me 'n Kawa are besties....or I wanna be besties...or he doesn't wanna be besties......

I had to drive 4 hours and work on my own Wednesday, plus the offbeat holiday vibe, so a lot of my mental energy went down memory lane. Not always the healthiest. It's nice to see today is better.
