Filco Linear R - need some input
« on: Wed, 11 April 2012, 23:15:44 »
Hello everybody! I got my first mech keyboard about 4 months ago and fell in love. I don't want to go back to domes. I currently have a noppoo choc mini with mx browns. Now that i am about to start playing an mmo again, i would like to get a keyboard with a numpad. I am also very curious about other switches, and decided that i would like to try the reds. I found one for a little over 200 shipped to my door, in almost perfect condition in the original box with a cool red wasd cluster. Is this keyboard worth the steep price? If anyone that has one already could give me some feedback on it i would really appreciate it. I have tried to search and haven't really found much. Thanks and looking forward to hearing from this community!

You really have to pay a pretty penny for a Filco Linear R. For about less than half the price, you can get a rosewill rk-9000 or a cm quickfire as long as you dont mind the logos.

If you buy that keyboard you are basically paying close to 100 dollars for exclusivity. Like thegunner100 said, for half the price you can get a Leopold (full sized), a Rosewill, or a CM quickfire. I would personally choose the Leopold because it doesn't have logos like the Rosewill and the CM quickfire. But some people don't mind the logos so buy whatever floats your boat.

I guess the message I'm trying send is that even though the Filco Linear R is double the price, it isn't twice as good. I would only buy the Filco if you have a lot of money, or if you are a circlejerking Filco fanboy.

Hmmm i was under the impression that you got a higher quality board with filco. I didn't know i was paying for just a brand. What about a ducky then? I've heard ducky is nice. Any decent full sized models that come with reds? Where can i find a Leopold? I'm definitely not a filco fanboy though haha i've never even owned one. This will be my 2nd board.

Get a Rosewill like I just did, the logo can just be erased off. There is a promo-code right now for them too, RWPAXEAST2 which will take $20 off the normal price.

damn that's a crazy good deal. so you really don't sacrifice build quality when going with the rosewill? now that im looking at duckys though, i kind of want backlit keys.

I haven't had much experience with Ducky so I can't really comment on them. But Leopolds, Filcos, and Rosewill are essentially all the same build quality, they are all very good. The only differences is that Leopold uses cherry stabilizers for its larger keys. To some people this is an issue, but I have tried both and I really don't mind the difference.

As long as you don't move it around a lot it should be fine. The only problem I have heard very much about is when handled roughly the USB connector can break, Newegg has an excellent return and replacement policy if that does happen though. It has the same OEM as Filco.

Qualitywise the Filco is the best out of all your options. Is it worth the extra 100$? That's a question only your wallet can awnser.
If money is an issue, get a fullsize leopold or a tenkeyless CM Rapidfire. They both have minor disadvantages (sucky stabiliziers / a ****load of ugly branding) but are very close to the filco.
If you want the best keyboard and you don't mind paying that extra $, get the filco.
Remember, you will probably own this keyboard for a long time.
And don't settle for backlit keyboards ... get a lamp instead ;)
But I'm probably just another Filco fanboy ... and I blame geekhack for that!

It is not humanly possible to find a Filco Linear R anymore though, his best bet is to either get a full sized Rosewill or a CM Storm Tenkeyless.

sucky stabilizziers

The stabilizers are different yes, but not everyone thinks they are bad. It personally doesn't make that much of a difference in my opinion of a keyboard.

Filco announced some Cherry Red boards will go out in 25 April and those boards are regular one not limited version. Though I'm not sure exactly what is Linear R.
I think those will be available also outside of Japan at some early date.

I don't have any Filco or Leopold boards but I can say G80-3600 is a good full Red board.

I have both the Filco and the Leopold the Leopold is red the filco is black switch. Both are great but I prefer the leopold for gaming plus you can't beat the price. $99 Here is the video I did of them both only thing I did notice was the white lettering showed noticeable wear after 1 week of light use on the leopold. Filco no wear at all and I typed no "HAMMERED" those keys for a month. Filco was $150+ Leopold $99-$115 shipping. Both have metal backplates.  As nice as the Leopold is I still think the quality goes to the filco.  Leopold keyboard at that price is really nice plus it's great playing on these red switches. I was going to go for rosewill but I seen some people say the usb is breaking so I stayed away. Newegg sometimes has deals for $79 thats not a bad gamble. Any link to the Filco Reds coming out? I need another keyboard I was going to pick up another leopold but I really like the Filco just not with black.

He wanted 104 key version. 87key fetches much higher price.
